Hope For Life Appeal

As you may remember from previous communications, we are doubling the size of our Clinical Trials Facility at Leicester’s Royal Infirmary through our ‘Hope For Life’ appeal. Although the COVID-19 pandemic is having a significant impact on research capability within The Hope Clinical Trials Facility, encouragingly, progress towards the completion of the redevelopment is continuing ahead and we will make sure to keep you updated through the various channels.

Our Hope For Life Appeal needs to raise a total of £1.5 million to redevelop and extend the Facility. Although the current Hope Facility has around 5,000 patient attendances each year, there is still an urgent need to double this as patient demand is increasing dramatically. Quite simply, the more we raise, the more patients will survive cancer for longer.

The project will mean offering many more patients the opportunity to participate in clinical trials of potential new drugs and treatments. Through some very generous donations, NHS match-funding and our own fundraising, we’re delighted to announce that we currently have £1 million towards our overall target which is an excellent effort so far. We are now calling on many more people to help towards this fundraising to raise the remaining £500,000 so that we can stay on track with our efforts.

If you’ve been moved by our ambition to prolong more lives of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland cancer patients, then please visit our Hope For Life Appeal JustGiving page via our website (www.hopeforlife.charity). We would also welcome you to follow our social pages (which can also be found via our website) and use the hashtag #HopeForLife to spread the word about the appeal.

Among the many words I’ve seen describing these times, they include those such as, “challenging, uncertain, turbulent, unprecedented”, and we perhaps should include “reflective”. Reflective of what’s important and what is less so!

These are without doubt unprecedented times; there is no textbook, guidance or flowchart to guide us through this. As a small charity, we are understandably concerned about the impact of this unfolding crisis – on our beneficiaries, our staff and volunteers.

There are almost 180,000 registered charities in the UK and thousands of not-for-profit organisations. Like them, we with your support, will step up to the challenge of providing continued support and assistance to those in great need, even when our own organisations are at risk.

With 80% of registered charities in the UK having an annual turnover of less than £200K, small charities are the very foundations of the sector. It is our mission to make sure we continue to do what’s important to Hope Against Cancer - to be able to fund life-saving cancer research right here in Leicester, so that a particularly vulnerable group of people at this time, continue to receive the very best treatment and therapies that research is continually uncovering.

The public are retrenching in fear, panic-buying, and today we do not have the “Blitz Spirit” we’re told!

Let’s reflect that in wartime Britain, a period of undoubted selflessness and heroism, at the same time, police officers had to be posted outside bombed properties in major cities to stop

looters. We should not fall into the trap of doing ourselves down today. Community and charitable spirit is abundant.

A couple of weeks ago I heard a story about a gin distillery in the West Country who were using their considerable skill working with alcohol to make hand-sanitising gel and giving it out free if people brought their own small bottles to fill and correspondingly gave a donation to a Bristol children’s charity. Not a commercial move to exploit a crisis, but a great corporate/charity partnership. Joint branded sticky labels were produced and excellent PR. If there are any local spirit distillers out there who want to innovatively support us, why not rise to that challenge?? (If anyone reading this knows of one, please pass this on to them)!

With your help, when this crisis is over we’ll still be here providing support to local cancer patients the only way we know how, through funding world class research. Even in these uncertain times, we remain tirelessly committed to beating cancer. Undoubtedly, this crisis will have an economic impact on our fundraising and if you would like to enable us to continue our research, please continue to support us. We receive no government support for our research, so we are entirely reliant on the generosity and loyal support of our corporate partners and generous community groups and individuals to support our work.

If you’re looking for ways to support us, visit our donate page: www.hopeagainstcancer.org.uk/donate

We need our community to be here for us now more than

ever and would like thank you in advance for your continued kindness and generosity.

And to begin where I started reflecting, let’s reflect on a favourite quote: “It will all be OK in the end, and if it isn’t OK, it’s probably not the end!”

Wishing you all retention of health.

An Update on The Hope Clinical Trials Facility

Phase 1 at the University of Leicester research facility is well underway. We are pleased to announce that all main construction has been finished. Phase 2, at The Hope Clinical Trials Facility in Leicester Royal Infirmary, will commence once the coronavirus pandemic has subsided.

Here are a few remarks from The Hope Clinical Trials Facility R&D Manager, Sarah Nicholson on why the expansion of the facility is desperately needed.

“It is a hectic time in the Hope Facility but nevertheless an exciting one. At the end of quarter three (December 19) we had a total of 110 studies on our portfolio. Of these, 22 closed to recruitment (but remained open to follow up) and 25 new studies opened. Overall in this nine month period, 462 new patients have taken up the opportunity to participate in research. In conjunction with our existing patients this created a total of an incredible 3,563 attendances at the Hope facility. The equivalent attendances during the same period in 2012 was 948! This truly demonstrates our development and the huge potential we have

to give even more patients access to research opportunities when we have doubled the capacity as outlined in the expansion programme.

Alongside their busy work schedule, the team are gradually getting organised for the ‘big move’. A timely spring clean is underway and as The Hope for Life Appeal goes live there are some very creative fund raising ideas in development - watch this space! A huge thank you to those that have donated so far and for Hope Against Cancer for driving this incredible initiative.”

The Randal Charitable Foundation Donates £101K to The Hope Clinical Trials Facility

With a passion for giving back, Dr Nik Kotecha founded the Randal Charitable Foundation in 2017. Hope has excitingly reached the £1 million mark recently with help from The Randal Charitable Foundation, following a large donation of £101,000. The Loughborough-based Foundation has a clear, unwavering vision that is to save lives, help the socially disadvantaged and improve the quality of life for those in need in the UK and around the world.

“Dr Nik is one among a small number of visionary and inspirational individuals who will help us transform our local cancer research facilities now and well into the future”.

Suits & Vinyls

On the 23rd January at the Queen of Bradgate pub, the Leicester business community dusted off their vinyls and put on their suits to support a “Suits & Vinyls” evening hosted by Ian Guyler and Matt Moore in aid of Hope and the Bodie Hodges Foundation.

Over fifty local businesses pledged sponsorship and in return received a framed, bespoke album cover kindly sponsored, designed and printed by Nick Taylor at Juice Creative.

The event raised over £6,000 to be split between both charities. We would like to say a massive THANK YOU to Hope Through Business member Ian Guyler, Matt Moore and Holly Wandless for a fantastic event!

Hope Through Business

Hope Against Cancer has strong backing from the local business community – we take a look at how individuals and businesses are doing their bit to support our cause.

Business club members from across the county each pledge to raise £1,500 over a two year period, which will help Hope Against Cancer fund vital local cancer research, support postgraduates and cancer clinicians pursuing a career in cancer research.

Barratt Homes donated £1,000

Big thank you to our friends at Barratt Homes for delivering a cheque for £1,000 to Hope HQ.

Business news

A huge thank you to RSM Leicester for supporting us this last year raising a massive £4,791. The team were able to raise this by raffles, dress down days and members of staff participating in the Leicester Half Marathon.

Thank you RSM Leicester!

The good people at The Property Fox - excellently-named Leicester estate agents - have raised £1,425 for us. We’d like to say a huge thank you to our furry, orange friends who raised the money through donating a portion of their profits from completed sales.

Apparently, the collective noun for foxes is a skulk. With that in mind, we think The Property Fox is a pretty great skulk!

An ACCA quiz night to remember!

Tracey Hallam and Nigel Rose attended ACCA quiz night at More Restaurant on London Road. The night was kindly sponsored by Hope supporter Paul Mitchell, of Paul Mitchell Associates who was celebrating 30 years in business. Both Paul and ACCA are supporting Hope by choosing us as their charity of the year. The magical night full of food and laughter was able to rasie an incredible £1,279! Well done ACCA!

Cite Charity Quiz

On 16th December, a number of Leicester’s leading digital, branding and creative agencies teamed up to take part in an all-agency quiz, raising £900 for Hope.

Supporting the quiz, now in its second year, were marketing agencies Bulb Studios, Cite, Effect, Herdl, Masters Allen, Rock Kitchen Harris, Swipe & Tap, Well & Truly and Un.titled for the collaborative event which took place at the city centre’s Brewdog pub.

As official quiz coordinators and corporate partner of the charity, Cite’s director Andy Leitch commented, “The Leicester creative agency scene is thriving. It’s refreshingly supportive – we help each other in areas like recruitment and work collaboratively when a particular skill set is required. It’s been great to get everyone together for this fantastic cause.”

Sales Manager Ian Hallam hosted a curry night to support his 2020 Survive the Wild fundraising. This was held at Chutney Ivy on 20th February and raised £4,000.

The event was a sell-out and supported by many local businesses who either bought tickets or donated prizes.

We would like to thank Ian for his continued support and wish him the best of luck in the wild!

Steamin’ Billy Jolly Night In

After a long, dry January for many, Steamin’ Billy hosted its “Jolly Night In” for regulars and suppliers whilst raising money for Hope. Across the pub chain the doors were closed to the public whilst Billy and his team treated everyone to drinks, delicious food and fabulous entertainment!

Everyone was asked to make a minimum £10 donation and across all the Steamin’ Billy pubs a brilliant £3,500 was raised for us.

Hope Heroes Swims Lengths!Oadby Rotary held their annual Swimarathon on Sunday 8th March, at Parklands Leisure Centre.

As Hope had been chosen as one of their charities for this event, we decided to put a team together!

Our Community Fundraiser, Vicki, persuaded our Chief Executive, Nigel Rose, Channel Swimmer, Chris Trethewey and Senior Research Nurse, Lydianne Lock, from the Hope Clinical Trials Facility to take on the challenge.

Altogether, we swam a huge 140 lengths, it was great fun!

Saffron Lane United Reformed Church has named Hope their charity of the year and raised £800. Saffron Lane URC is a small friendly church and is part of the South Leicestershire Group.

In late 2018, Mary Grace, a lovely member of the church chose us as the annual charity for 2019. Sadly Mary, who suffered from cancer, passed away in April 2019. The members of the church wanted to raise as much as possible for Hope in loving memory of Mary. Various events were held throughout the year to raise funds.

We are fortunate to have the support of our local communities. On these pages, we take a peek at those who are pulling out all the stops to raise funds for our Charity.

Volunteers at Leicester Royal Infirmary

Some of our volunteers Janet, Bev, Linda, Pam, Anne and David promoted the charity in the reception of the Osborne Building at the Leicester Royal Infirmary over the Christmas period, selling our Christmas jumpers, cards and other festive items.

Everyone was amazing and raised a total of £989 which is fantastic! A huge congratulations to you all. We really wouldn’t be able to do what we do without you!

St Mary’s Hosts their first Christmas Tree Festival! St Mary’s Church in Knighton decided to hold their first Christmas Tree Festival this past December. The aim was for it to be a community focused event which would engage various groups within the community to come together. It was decided by the community that it would be a fundraising activity with the money

raised divided between Hope and the church spire fund.

The event was held across two days, 7th and 8th December 2019, and was a huge success with 1,094 adults and 425 children visiting over the weekend along with 160 people who came to a service led by Matthew Gough.

‘We were absolutely delighted to be the chosen charity for their event, and it was managed extremely well by all those involved – A huge congratulations to everyone for a fantastic event and thank you for supporting us at Hope Against Cancer.”
