President’s Message - Susan Shepard I would like to start by saying that all of us lost a special member with the sudden passing of Karna Cupples, from Seaside Fire & Rescue, on February 5, 2013. I want to extend our thoughts and prayers to her family and Seaside Fire & Rescue. It’s only about two months before our 2013 workshop in Seaside. Karna was the Chairperson for the committee, along with Mary Lou Busch and Karin Goodman. She has been with OFSOA since 2004 and was so excited to be hosting this year’s workshop. They have a great schedule planned with worthwhile topics and speakers. They also set up a special night with a dinner of steak and seafood that the Seaside Fire & Rescue is going to cook for us, followed with a fun night of bunko. The committee will continue forward with the plans for a great workshop. You won’t want to miss it. We are still in need of a representative for Region 3. If you have ever thought you might want to get more involved, this would be a great opportunity. Be assured you would have a great deal of support if you would like to give it a try. My goal as president is to continue to value the professional image of our organization as an integral part of the ire service. While we continue to provide support, training, and resources that are pertinent to our members, and our ire service partners, we stay steady to our motto: “Sharing a Standard of Excellence”. Stand Up and Stand Out!

Attention Region 3 Members (Counties of Lane, Douglas, Coos, Curry, Josephine, and Jackson). The executive board position of Region 3 Rep is currently vacant. If you have thought about getting more

involved with OFSOA, this is the perfect opportunity!

The position is an elected position, but would be filled at this time by a majority vote of the Board of Directors, to run until the next general election of Officers, at which time this vacancy will be filled in the

regular manner for the unexpired term only.

The duties are described in the policy manual found on our website. To summarize, Region Reps are to be in contact with members in their region, acting as a liaison between the members and the board (example – regular emails); attend quarterly board meetings and report for their region, as well as

reporting back to the members; and meet first-time members at events and provide them information on the assistance OFSOA can provide them and their district/departments.

The Officer Nomination form that must be completed can be found at www.ofsoa.com under

Documents. You will also need a letter of support from your Fire Chief or Supervisor. Submit both

documents to OFSOA President Susan Shepard at [email protected] .

StressAtWork

You have employees under stress at work. Maybe they aren't handling their jobs satisfactorily. Here's what you can do:

Firststep: Don't overreact. Don't make accusations and don't threaten.

Secondstep: If the employee's stress is severe, get help for the employee from a professional counselor or a psychologist.

Thirdstep: If the stress, and the resulting poor job performance, is caused by the employee's personal (non-work) life, then backoff. Don't try to be a father, mother, brother, sister, priest, minister, or psychiatrist to your employees.

Fourthstep: Step up the frequency and honesty of performance evaluations. Be sure the employee understands what his or her job duties are and are not. Many employees under stress are confused about their job duties...or are trying to accomplish too much.

Fifthstep: If the stress (or poor job performance) is caused by work-related conditions, help the employee break down the dificulty into manageable parts. And then help him or her tackle them one by one.

Sixthstep: Allow time for improvement. Don't expect overnight changes. Let your employee know you expect change, gradually. Set realistic time frames for achievement of changes.

ScioFireDistrict CelebratesNewStation

On November 17, 2012, approximately 300 people gathered in the close-knit community of Scio, Oregon to celebrate the dedication of their newest ire station.

Station 91 replaces the existing District ofice. The $2.4 million dollar, 16,000-square foot building, paid for with part of a $3.1 million dollar General Obligation Bond, also consolidated the ofice space and apparatus storage. Prior to construction, the apparatus was stored at another location a couple of blocks away.
