Burke, Virginia

Grand Knight’s Report

Brothers,

I hope everyone had a nice New Years.

As I look back over the past 6 month, this I nothing like what I thought my term as Grand Knight would be. With the Pandemic, it is true that we cannot do all the things we typically do.

Even with everything that is going on we are still doing a lot.

We are supporting our Pastor and the Parish by being Porters for the weekend Masses. This allows the church to hold Mass and stay within the guidelines established by the CDC.

We have had 2 Blood Drives, one we hosted and the other at St. Raymond’s. We worked with INOVA to ensure all the of the COVID precautions were in place and safely met our goals. And we have another one scheduled for February 27th.

We have had 2 record breaking St Lucy’s food drives. We had to change the format, and do it Drive By Style, but they were both a great success. We even had Bishop Burbidge come out and help collect for from people’s cars during the 1st one.

We had a Shred Event, partnering with Marion Homes, which was also a great event. Drive By, donate, and have your old documents removed from your trunk and shredded. What could be easier.

We continue to do our Adopt-A-Highway clean up of Old Kean Mill Road.

We built a home in Appalachia, during a pandemic. If that is not dedication, I do not know what is.

We participated in our Parish Golf Tournament.

We supported the Our Lady of Guadalupe Celebration.

We have aided our Brothers in need.

Just to name a few. Yes, things are different, but our council is still active, and we are doing what we can.

Looking forward to the next 6 months. Unfortunately, I do not see the COVID restrictions relaxing any time soon. So, we will still have to meet Virtual and we still must modify the events we can have.

As I mentioned above, we already have another Blood Drive Schedule.

Our annual Art Action is still going to happen, it will be virtual, but we are still going to make it happen.

If you are going to Mass in-person, please consider volunteering to be a porter. This is a vital task that Father Bob has asked us to do.

We just need to keep focused on what we can do and not on the things we cannot do.

Something we do need to try to work on for the next 6 months is recruiting. If you know of someone who would make a good Knight, please talk to them, and get them in contact with Worthy Deputy Grand Knight Adrian. There are still lots of options for getting new members to join the council. Supreme and the Virginia State Council both have Virtual

Special Olympics Polar Plunge for 2021

The Special Olympics mission remains as vital today as it did when the movement was founded 52 years ago. The KOC provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. This gives them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

The program, however, is about more than sports. We envision a world in which people with intellectual disabilities lead healthy, vibrant lives grounded in ongoing sports and physical activity, sound nutrition and a deeply held conviction to improve, compete, achieve and demonstrate their personal best to themselves and their community. The KOC current strategic plan is focused on continued programmatic growth, program quality and increased funding.

With approximately half of the world's population under the age of 25, young people are critical to addressing many of society's most pressing issues.

This new generation brings creativity, energy and an openness to change, and Special Olympics seeks to harness this power. As catalysts for change, youth with and without intellectual disabilities are vital owners of the inclusion process, and when empowered and unified by veteran supporters of the KOC Brother Knights movement, they will be unstoppable.

To succeed, we need more Knights, heroes, and fighters like you. Because of COVID-19, donations can be made by website or U.S. Mail.

Donations can be made by credit card directly to: https://impact.specialolympicsva.org/team/3287

To learn more about this charity and to obtain a U.S Mail in donation form and address, please click: Ways to Donate (specialolympicsva.org

Note: If you decide to donate whatever amount you can, please put Council 7992 on your paper check or the website. Our councils goal is $463.00 for 2021. May God bless our efforts.

Volunteers Needed

We are looking for 3-5 volunteers to serve on the

Widows Program Committee. Members will be

responsible for maintaining contact with 1-2 widows

on a quarterly basis, inviting widows to Council

activities, and most importantly bringing any special

needs to the Council. Please contact Br Bob Corsi at:

703-239-2890, [email protected].

Recruiting New Brothers Do you know someone who has been on the fence about joining the Knights? The Supreme Council will

be making a special Membership offer in honor of our founder Fr McGivney getting beatified and officially declared Blessed later this year.

Handy Knights Ministry

Fellow Knights — are you handy? Do you aspire to be handy? Do you have a few hours a month to volunteer to help parishioners who need a little bit of help in their homes? Sometimes it is just changing a lightbulb, sometimes it is helping to sort out a remote control for a TV, and mostly it is about spending time

with folks who are our parishioners who maybe are getting along in years and don’t get to have much company. I am looking to fill a roster with volunteers. If you are interested, please email me and tell me what your talents are and I will keep you on file when a job that fits your talents comes up. Brother Bob Colella [email protected]

Appalachia Home Building

For the last 20 years, we have partnered with Appalachian Construction Crew, Inc. from Bellevue, Nebraska to build a home in Kentucky’s McCreary county. We will partner with them again this summer to build our council’s 23rd home (24th counting the major addition) and the 36th for the Crew. Past participants have seen firsthand the severe poverty in Appalachia.

Based on our fiscal projections, we are looking to build one home in Whitley City, KY, approximately 570 miles from Burke, VA. The Good Shepherd Catholic Mission already selected the Stephens family of six to receive the home. This will be our second four-bedroom home.

We need to start planning who will be on this years’ crew. We are looking to build a Nativity crew of 15 (NOT including alternates). As we did last year, we are looking to have a second crew come later and stay longer to help with finishing. Overall, we will be staying longer to do more of the interior finishing, like last year, to include hanging/finishing the sheetrock, installing the kitchen cabinets, trimming, and hanging all the interior doors. We plan to finalize the crew rosters by the end of March so alternates can make necessary plans.

We can expect that we will be following the same COVID guidelines from September with daily temperatures, restricting outside activities and

visitors to the Inn, and voluntary mask wearing at the Inn. Given the very strenuous work involved, 12-hour work days, and summer heat, we ask that only those in good physical condition volunteer. Do not volunteer if you have any medical issues in the current COVID environment. We would also ask that you be sensitive to your engagements two weeks prior to your deployment. Please talk to brothers who participated in the past to answer questions about physical demands. Priority is to ensure that we have the right skill mix to complete the build and we will give consideration to any brother who previously participated, other knights, family members, and any other volunteers that are interested and can be accommodated, in that order. We also, if at all possible, want to include new brothers that have not participated in the past.

In order to be ready for the plumbing inspector, we will again leave earlier as we did last year. The deployment for Crew #1 is scheduled from Wednesday, 2 June to Wednesday, 9 June (weather permitting). Deployment of Crew #2 is scheduled from Tuesday, 8 June to Tuesday, 15 June. All dates include two days travel. We will stay at St. Joseph’s Inn for the duration and meals will be provided.

THIS IS THE ONLY CALL FOR CREW VOLUNTEERS. IF YOU THINK YOU ARE ON THE LIST, OR WANT TO BE ON THE LIST, CONFIRM WITH BOB CORSI BY 31 JAN-UARY. DO NOT ASSUME YOU ARE ON THE LIST—CALL BOB AT 703-239-2890!

Knight’s Prison Ministry

Our Knight's Prison Ministry, a 501c3 Charity, is looking for a Book keeper or Accountant to work four hours per week. We are looking at the lowest bid to hire.

Our Prison Ministry hires recent paroles and uses their skills to paint and fix up houses. Our Ministry is a Godsend to our paroles, who now use the work that

we give them, to become financially secure. This opportunity also gives them independence, and a future to believe in.

The Accountant or Bookeeper that we hire, only needs to work on the books. However, if they would like to meet the people that we help, that would be nice.

January Family Reflection — Family Prayer

The Christian family needs to put first things first by cultivating a relationship with God together through prayer. Prayer is essential for families to develop Christian joy, faith, hope and love. All Knights are encouraged to reflect with their families on the theme of ‘family prayer’ this month.

Breaking Open the Theme

The Christian family is called to offer to Christ all of its activities through a life of prayer. The Catechism of the Catholic Church gives this advice about prayer: “We cannot pray ‘at all times’ if we do not pray at specific times, consciously willing it.” In other words, families need to set aside a definite time for formal prayer together in order to have prayer infuse every-thing they do. family members must build their life around God rather than fit God into their busy schedule. If families attempt the latter, then they are sure to find prayer dry and will eventually leave it out of their schedule altogether.

To help nourish a shared prayer life, it is a good idea to learn more about different ways of praying and to establish a rhythm of praying. Different forms of prayer include vocal prayer (saying out loud a formal prayer, giving praise, asking for forgiveness, thanks-giving, adoration, petition, etc.); meditation on scripture or other religious writings; and contempla-tion, in which a person just listens to and talks with God as one would with a friend, but there are other ways of praying, such as through song and art. A family should consider its rhythm of prayer, such as morning or evening prayer, grace before and after meals, and prayers before bedtime. Some rhythms are weekly, such as Sunday Mass and entering into the sabbath rest. Some rhythms are yearly, such as the liturgical year and its feast days. finally, some rhythms of prayer should be unique to each person’s family, such as prayerfully celebrating birthdays, anniversaries of family members’ weddings, baptisms (or other sacraments) and patron saints. The possibilities are endless, but it is necessary to develop a rhythm because “life is shaped by rhythms: the rhythm of heartbeat and breathing, the rhythm of day

and night, of meals, of weeks, and so on. Mental pray-er should become a daily event as vital to us as the basic rhythms of existence. It should become the breathing of our souls.”

Meditation

From Pope John Paul II’s Familiaris Consortio

Family prayer has its own characteristic qualities. It is prayer offered in common, husband and wife togeth-er, parents and children together. Communion in prayer is both a consequence of and a requirement for the communion bestowed by the sacraments of baptism and Matrimony. The words with which the lord Jesus promises His presence can be applied to the members of the Christian family in a special way: “again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will bedone for them by my fa-ther in heaven. for where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” Family prayer has for its very own object family life itself, which in all its varying circumstances is seen as a call from God and lived as a filial response to His call. Joys and sorrows, hopes and disappointments, births and birthday celebrations, wedding anniversaries of the parents, departures, separations and homecomings, important and far-reaching decisions, the death of those who are dear, etc. — all of these mark God’s loving intervention in the family’s history. They should be seen as suitable moments for thanksgiving, for pe-tition, for trusting abandonment of the family into the hands of their common father in heaven. The dignity and responsibility of the Christian family as the do-mestic Church can be achieved only with God’s un-ceasing aid, which will surely be granted if it is humbly and trustingly petitioned in prayer.

Discussion Questions:

1. Is prayer at the center of our family life? If not, why?

2. How can we better build a rhythm of prayer into our family’s life? In what way can we mark significant family moments throughout the year with prayer?

Continued on next page

Page 8: The Sikorian - Nativity Catholic Church

The Sikorian

Continued from previous page

3. What are our family members’ preferred ways of praying — vocal, meditative or contemplative? Is there a way to incorporate each family member’s preferred way of praying into family prayer?

Scripture Reading — Psalm 65:6-14

A prayer of gratitude for God’s blessings

You answer us with awesome deeds of justice, O God our savior, The hope of all the ends of the earth

You are robed in power, you set up the mountains by your might.

You still the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, the tumult of the peoples.

Distant peoples stand in awe of your marvels; the places of morning and evening you make resound with joy.

You visit the earth and water it, make it abundantly fertile.

God’s stream is filled with water; you supply their grain.

Thus do you prepare it: you drench its plowed

furrows, and level its ridges.

With showers you keep it soft, blessing its young sprouts.

You adorn the year with your bounty; your paths drip with fruitful rain.

The meadows of the wilderness also drip; the hills are robed with joy.

The pastures are clothed with flocks, the valleys blanketed with grain; they cheer and sing for joy.

Family Project

The Catechism recommends that we find places favorable for prayer. One of the places it suggests is a “prayer corner” in the home. If you do not already have one, make a prayer corner in the home in order to facilitate prayer. This sacred space could be a simple table with a nice cloth over it, a bible, religious images and statues, rosaries, candles, prayer cards, a family prayer intention book, a vase for flowers, etc. Make the corner unique to your family and have each family member contribute one religious item to the prayer corner.

Prison Ministry Fr Vaccaro is asking brother knights help in writing letters to those incarcerated. He has a list of names

whose lives might be impacted for the better with your correspondence. Please contact him if interested.

Church Porters If you are attending a Mass in person, please consider being a Mass Porter. Invite your wife to join you and do it together. If you know someone who is not a Knight but may want to serve the parish, get them signed up, could be a great way to recruit them.

With the COVID situation impacting so many things, our Council’s service as Porters is a way to serve in a very meaningful way.
