Volunteer of the Month

May 2009

Donald NehringDonald Nehring was born to Harold & Beatrice Nehring in 1942. One of 7 children, Don attended WillistonSchools and graduated from WHS in 1960. For excitement in his younger days, he raced motorcycles. His Dadoperated a motorcycle shop at the time, which gave Don a bit of an edge over his competitors.

Following a 2 year stint in the army, Don completed a 2 year course at Williston College and worked for HarryDix as a bricklayer's helper, known as a hod carrier. Don met the love of his life in 1966, and when he asked forCoreen's hand in marriage, her Dad insisted that Don return to college if he was going to marry his daughter. SoDon enrolled at UND and got married 1 month before school started in 1967. Lucky for him, Coreen had alreadygraduated from UND so she was able to get a good paying job while he completed his eduction. Two years later,Don graduated from UND with a degree in accounting.

Don and Coreen were ready to see the world. The first thing they did was order a 1969 Mustang. Then Donwent to work for GAO, the US Accounting Office, as an auditor working out of the Denver Office. But after a year,he received a call from Mike Zine in Williston, offering him a position in their accounting firm. Don and Coreen didn'twaste any time returning home to ND, and they had a new appreciation for their home state. After becoming aCPA, Don became a sole practitioner, and had his own accounting firm for more than 30 years.

Don and Coreen are very proud of their 2 children who both live in Williston: Jeff is an attorney (Nehring Law),and Russ is a CPA, continuing his Dad's practice known as Nehring Accounting. The 2 boys work in the sameoffice building, a dream come true for their parents. Eight grandchildren round out the Nehring clan, an addedbonus!

Don is retired now. He enjoys golf, riding motorcycle, antique & muscle cars, playing pool, camping, watchingracing, delivering meals and socializing at the Senior Center are also among his favorite things to do. Howeverthis past winter was a REAL challenge, (a concussion and nearly run over). But that hasn't discouraged Don. Hesays Char's good cooking is well worth it!

THANK YOU IS SOINADEQUATE WHENwe look back on all the love,

concern, care, meals, well-wishes,thoughts and hugs we’ve receivedin the past weeks. This is the bestplace on earth to live, the people

here care so much about andfor their neighbors and friendsthat grief and sadness seem to

fade into the mist. You will neverknow how much your

support has meant to all of us.The neighbors in Grenora wereat the house in an instant and

stayed until there was nothing leftto take care of. The ambulance

crew arrived in full force and wereabsolutely professional and yetshowed compassion and care.

I know that it was not an easy callfor them as Dick was, it seems, apart of everything that happened

in town. We are beginning torealize that Dick’s passing has

effects on so many people that, when you’re hurting, you don’t

seem at first. Our friends in and around our

hometowns of Williston, MedicineLake, Reserve and Grenora have

been wonderful to us.Everson Funeral Home did a

fine job and Pastor David Halaaspulled everything together for uswith a most inspiring celebration

of Dick’s life. Evelene workedher magic to make everything

flow so smoothly at the church. The St. Olaf ladies fed us awonderful meal the Grenora

Senior Citizens hosted a verynice afternoon for visiting and

more and eats. Erling, Duane andScott moved tons of snow to

make room for parking and walkingto the house and the church.

Thank you all for all you’ve doneand continue to do. I’m sure that

we’re missing things here butplease know that we so appreciateevery one of you and everythingyou’ve done. People will forget

what they said, People will forgetwhat they did, be WE will neverforget the way you made us feel.
