A project by Ilya and Emila Kabakov and their cultural partner Verbier 3-D

The Ship of Tolerance

The Ship of Tolerance, a project by Ilya and Emilia Kabakov (www.shipoftolerance.org) whose mission is to educate and connect youths from different continents, cultures and identities, through the language of art will exhibit in Moscow and New York in September 2013. The Kabakov’s have already built boats in Cuba, Egypt, Venice, the UAE and St. Mortitz. Next year they will build boats in Rio and Mexico City. Verbier 3-D is trying to get a boat built in Bagnes for 2014.

The Sails

Nearly 200 students, from kindergarten to 6th grade, from the Verbier and Bruson schools participated in painting sails for the Ship of Tolerance. Each child drew his interpretation of tolerance on a piece of one meter by one meter fabric. The amazing results are in this book. The eldest wrote sentences about tolerance and a selection has been chosen for this book.

Verbier 3-D will send the sails to New York, the best of which will become part of the sails of the Ship exhibited at Brooklyn Bridge Park next to a selection of sails created by New York schoolchildren. After the exhibition in September the sails will return to Bagnes to become the sails of the ship built in Bagnes.

During the New York exhibition, the Kabakov’s will organize a virtual link between some American, Russian and Swiss schoolchildren so that they can meet each other and discuss tolerance.

Fanny Monnet

In connection with the exhibition openings of the Ships in Moscow and New York, Emilia Kabakov is organizing concerts by young musicians who come from the different countries where there have been ships built in the past. This year, Fanny Monnet, a young pianist from Vollège will perform in Moscow and New York.

Ilya et Emilia Kabakov

Ilya and Emilia Kabakov are globally recognized as the premier artists to emerge from the Soviet Union and major figures on the international art scene. Ilya is a leading figure of the Russian Conceptual art movement of the 1970’s and 80’s. This year he will be celebrating his 80th birthday during the exhibition in New York.

Next year, they have the honor of being invited to exhibit at the Grand Palais for Monumenta, a prominent exhibition in Paris. The couple intend “to evoke the big visions of progress, of science and of the elevation of man, which can lead to the brink of disaster”. Emilia Kabakov is the first woman artist to participate in Monumenta.

Verbier 3-D

The 3-D Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating monumental contemporary sculpture to promote art, education, and culture to international audiences.

Founded in 2010 by New York-based artist Madeleine Paternot and Verbier-based artist Kiki Thompson, the Verbier 3-D Sculpture Park and Residency create a space for Art and Ecology to meet on the mountain.

Each individual can experience his own sense of escape in the museum without walls.
