Sharing Economy Proposal (Innök_01_03/15)
The Sharing Economy in Germany Consumer Motives for Participating in Collaborative Consumption Schemes
A joint research project from the Chair of Innovation Economics at Technische Universität Berlin and the School of Management and Government at Universiteit Twente, Netherlands
Intention
This study serves as explorative work on the phenomenon of the sharing economy, addressing its underlying rationales and core principles. The center piece of this research is an online survey distributed to users of peer-to-peer marketplaces. It aims to investigate their motives of participating in collaborative consumption schemes. At the same time, respondents with no sharing history are included in the sample to understand how their attitudes and values differ from those taking part in the sharing economy.
Distribution and Results
The survey invitation and link are currently distributed via collaborative consumption platforms, expert groups, sharing-unrelated communities and the author’s personal network. The survey is still active until mid March and counts approximately 500+ participants until then. Detailed study results will be available in April, a publication is envisioned.
Upon data analysis, the prevalent reasons for exchanging goods and services on a peer-to-peer basis will be much clearer as we gain important insights into users’ motivations, sharing experience and their overall feelings towards collaborative consumption. Amongst other points, questions will consider the sides of a peer-to-peer transaction, thereby dividing givers and takers in a sharing equation. It will further be asked for the participants’ opinions as to how the sharing trend will develop and whether their behavior may adapt, including e.g. their willingness to pay. On the other hand, the partial sample of non-sharers can be characterized further. By comparing both groups of respondents we attempt to draw profiles of different types of consumers involved in German collaborative consumption schemes.
This is only a short abstract of a final thesis project to be handed in April, 30th to reach the double degree (M.Sc. Innovation Management & Entrepreneurship, M.Sc. Business Administration).
