President’s Message Greg Pfremmer

July is here and so is the summer heat. For me, it is a wake-up call to get my

car clean in those areas I neglect during the fall and winter months. I spend

lots of time in my driveway cleaning and waxing. You could almost call it

relaxing for me and I enjoy it.

I guess that I am out there so often that when I got stopped by a police

officer in the town I live in (for driving slightly over the limit) he saw the address

on my license and said, “Oh, you’re the guy that is always in the driveway

cleaning his cars. Slow down and have a nice day”. I thanked him! We spoke

about cars for a few minutes and then I went about my merry way back to my

home, happy to have avoided a ticket!

The Schneider+Nelson “Porsches at the Beach” event was a lot of fun and

it was a full event with lots of shiny Porsches. There was music, food and lots

of “Porsche” talk. It was a great time as evidenced by the large turnout of

Porsches. This event continues to get bigger and better every year.

We have two events scheduled in July, the first being an open board

meeting on Tuesday, July 14th at Woody’s Roadside Tavern in Farmingdale,

NJ. The meeting will start at 6:30 pm. We will have some pizza and snacks

with a cash bar. Please come out and give us your ideas on what you feel the

Jersey Shore Region should be doing in the interest of the membership.

Our second event is the rescheduled Hopewell Valley Winery on Saturday,

July 25th. Look for a complete write up on this event in this months Shoreline.

There is live entertainment, with a guy by the name of Chris Roselle singing

mostly oldies and playing his guitar. In my opinion his singing could easily be

on the Voice or American Idol. Look Rave-On up at http://

www.raveonband.com/ to get an idea of how good Chris is.

August brings our Driver’s Education event at New Jersey Motorsports Park on August 19 & 20 and we are

all looking forward to a great event this year. Once again we have the two days preceding the Schattenbaum

Club Race which is scheduled for August 21-23. The event is being sponsored by Schneider+Nelson

Porsche. We are looking forward to seeing all of our good friends, new drivers, and enjoying the camaraderie

as much as driving on the track. Please register as soon as possible so we can get an accurate count for

students & instructors.

Once again, Bodymotion is providing a free tech inspection on August 13th starting at 6:00 pm. We can’t

thank Mike Bavaro and his staff enough for the enormous time (not to mention payroll) that he extends to us

year after year. Thanks Mike!

Thought I would share one of my recent PORSCHE travel

experiences with you all as this trip was all about you! You being the PORSCHE faithful, the PORSCHE customer, the PORSCHE

enthusiast!

I had the pleasure of attending the Dealer Premier of the new PORSCHE Experience Center in Atlanta, Georgia!

Porsche Cars North America has always been in Atlanta and recently, PORSCHE

moved Porsche Financial Services to Atlanta as well. Now they reside together under the roof of this impressive facility, but that is not the exciting part, the exciting part is that the corporate headquarters is open to the public!

In this facility you will find a fantastic restaurant ( Restaurant 356 ), a great coffee shop, all the “selection” items in a great gift store, a complete state of the art fitness facility called “ Human Performance”, real deal race car simulators, an ever-changing collection of cars from the PORSCHE Museum in Germany, a PORSCHE Restoration Center ( Porsche Classic ) that includes available storage and maintenance for owners classic Porsche’s, a full training center for future PORSCHE technicians and a state of the art aluminum repair training center. Not to mention, you can host a business meeting from 16 people up to a bar mitzvah for 300! And, the BEST PART is the 75 cars and staff of pro drivers for the on-site track that the entire facility proudly looks over! $300 to $750 will get you 90 minutes of DRIVING TIME where you can explore the various on road courses and an off road course in your choice of vehicles! For about $35 per half hour you can use a simulator or for a reasonable fee, rent the entire room! So much for traveling to golf courses and fishing for company team building / outings, this place will become a private and corporate destination for sure! They already are starting to get booked up, as it is literally at the end of the runway at Atlanta’s airport, you can fly in, have a complete PORSCHE emersion and fly out all in the same day. Factoring the reasonable costs and airfare,

and I don’t think there is a better value out there! The PORSCHE corporate team kept driving it home to us that this PORSCHE home is the US home to all that embrace the brand! If you can, check out your new home, it’s worth the trip!


The Jersey Shore Region’s Driver’s Education Event New Jersey Motorsports Park

August 19th & 20th 2015

The Jersey Shore Region Drivers Education event is scheduled for August 19th and 20th. Our Region has a very relaxed and friendly driving event and everyone has a great time with plenty of time on the track.

This year we are back preceding the Schattenbaum Region PCA Club race

and invite you join us at this years event. We will be on the Thunderbolt circuit. If you have not yet registered, but plan to, please register as soon as

possible. If you get a friend to register who would like to try a driver’s education event but has never been on a track before, both you and the new driver will receive a $50 credit on the cost of the DE. We are required to have a commitment to the track in July so your early registration would be appreciated.

The event is now open for registration. There are several ways to register:

Member Spotlight - William (Bill) Kreig—JSR Member for 40 Years! By: Mike Bavaro

The question we posed to Bill? What turns a 1960‟s drag racer into a lifelong Porsche fan (attic)? His explanation:

Bill served our country in the armed services and while doing so was introduced to his sergeant‟s Porsche 356. He pondered

on its agility, no frills or gadgets, less things to break and less weight to tote around, utilitarian style. After investigating, he

purchased a brand new 1971 914 1.7 liter Porsche. Bill contacted who was then a charter member of the Jersey Shore Porsche

Club, the late Gene Malleus. Bill became a member officially and began to enjoy all of the benefits offered. Track driver ed

events topped his short list, which, also included the “Gathering of Friends”, Jersey Shore‟s perennial favorite “ Concours de

‟Elegance”, and also locally organized road rallies.

Bill graduated from Seton Hall and used his Porsche as an economical and fun way to commute to his job as an

accountant and sometimes bank auditor. By the time the decade was ready to roll over, Bill spied a Bahia Red 1973 911 T with

mechanical fuel injection. He sold the 914 in 1979, which as the story goes, is the only Porsche Bill has ever actually “sold”.

This would become a staple in what was becoming his family with wife Carol and sons William (Billy) and Michael. Both

sons grew up in the 911 which, was soon to fill other roles, including wedding duty at Bill Jr‟s big day. Bill always

maintained his cars himself, and it shows because they all look and run great. However in the 1990‟s he realized that the

mechanically injected, air cooled 2.4 six cylinder was in need of its second rebuild. He contacted Bodymotion and we

discussed the plan. Bill was well informed (well before the internet days, kids, and this means real research) and so we rebuilt

the aging power plant which included an increase in displacement to 2.5 liters.

Bill added to his collection a 1977 930, the color, a rare but very attractive Peru Red. Bill has done small

modifications but it is mostly stock pumping out 260 horses. This is his “concours” car and has garnered many awards at

shows. This car was always rare as not many were produced by Porsche, but even rarer because it has not been changed or

modified to the later 3.3 liter displacement with air to air intercooler.

Realizing he couldn‟t keep and maintain all of these Porsches he “loaned” the 73 911 permanently to his eldest son

Billy. However, 3,000 miles separated them so Bill Sr. contacted me in 2005 to transport the 911 to California while our

Grand Am Race team was on its west coast swing. However due to an untimely wreck in Mid-Ohio we didn‟t make the trip.

Bill then went into plan “B” and drove the car, by himself, loaded with tools and food from Jersey to California. This he

exclaimed was his most memorable Porsche moment, or should I say odyssey?

Meanwhile, his weekend warrior track addiction sent him out to purchase yet another Porsche. Not quite the “one for

each day” kind of guy, but, one for each “purpose” kind of guy. His newest acquisition is pictured here with its carbon fiber

hood and track tires and suspension. Bill is on his way to the upcoming Watkins Glen 48 hour Zone One event this week. Bills

younger son Michael is currently driving his 1981 Carrera Targa so almost everyone in the family is driving a Porsche, which

by the way, leaves you out, Carol. Not to worry! I saw a real nice Cayenne the other day at Schneider and Nelson. Since you

and Mr. Retiree are now traveling, why not a nice Turbo Cayenne S for Carol?


Mike’s Morsels Expert engine builder Mike Bavaro shares his vast array of Porsche knowledge

PORSCHE LIQUID COOLED ENGINES 1999-2008 M96/97 INTERMEDIATE SHAFT BEARING FAILURE

As our series on the M 96/97 continues this month, we are incorporating some questions and comments that we have received. Strange is that some come from out of our region so I guess some are checking out our Shoreline on-line. Thank you for all your verbal and written comments and questions.

WARNING SIGNS

The most frequent question is, as addressed last month, that the failure rate

still hovers between 3-5% as far as issues due to the IMS bearing. The second MFAQ is how do drivers quantify all of the expense and efforts to

prevent engine failure? Oil sampling has been working great; in fact just in the past week we returned

from the PCA race. One of our customers has a 997 with M96/03 engine. The oil samples have suggested lately that the increase in lead, copper and aluminum in the oil are indication of advancing internal wear. Once the rod and main bearings break thru the outer wear surface due to normal wear and tear, the inner copper bearing material is then worn away and the bearing backing can’t take the load. The evidence was building with the warning signs weeks before from the oil samples.

But now, the oil pressure light was blinking when the engine oil was hot and at

idle. The factory oil pressure warning light activates at 7 pounds of pressure. At 7 pounds it’s already too late, so we reprogram most of our cars to activate the warning alarm light when oil pressure falls below 25 psi. A bit high but, it gives the driver time to react and save the engine, which is exactly what happened, so we pulled the car from further competition.

A good thing too, as the engine is now apart. The extreme wear to all the engine bearing’s caused the oil pressure to bleed off due to the increase in clearance between the bearings and the crankshaft; basically the analogy of this condition is that the engine is “bleeding” internally. The difference in catching this failure early, before the crankshaft is damaged and worse? About two months of time and $20,000.

Some photos here to rate the possible damage on a scale 1-10. The scale starting at #1

being simply worn out to #10 being completely “blown up” with no usable core or parts. For purpose of scale, let’s call conditions #1-3 to be slight damage due to wear and tear, with possible high crankcase blow by, or possible low or uneven cylinder compression readings or high cylinder leak down, but completely repairable with no major component damage. Damage scale #’s 4, 5 , 6 would represent conditions where the engine was still running with low or no oil pressure, the bearings actually begin to disintegrate, overheating the rods and crankshaft. Basically rendering these components unfit for future service because they are just past the point of no return. Photographed here is a #6 bearing, it is the first to get oil and the first to run out of oil. It is visually and painfully obvious that this rod and the crankshaft have exceeded the temperature that destroys the hard surface coating.

Another tip for owners who keep their eyes ears and noses open, keep a close watch on

the coolant reservoir. A low coolant level in the reservoir would trigger an orange flashing light at the top of the temperature gauge on the dash. Adding coolant is fine and may be normal, however if you have to top up the coolant more than once, look for an external leak at the water pump and at the cylinder head gasket parting on both side heads. This could be an early warning to overheating. The dash temperature gauge won’t move off center unless the engine gets over 230 degrees, and when it pegs on 250 degrees F it’s usually too late. Again, this is a service tip that extends to all liquid cooled models MY99 and up.

PORSCHES AT THE BEACH


The weather was perfect as Jersey Shore members arrived at the Circus Drive-In

for a “Cruise In” on Sunday, June 14th. The Circus Drive-In is a classic Shore

landmark for its genuine „50s style, fun atmosphere, and good food.

We had a great turnout including Porsches from multiple years, and a couple of

non-Porsches were there also. Everyone enjoyed talking “Porsche” and seeing all

the cars shined up and looking great.

Members enjoyed the food from this famous Drive-In featured on the Food

Channels “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” for their crabcake sandwiches. In addition

to their regular menu, they have a huge selection of ice cream and deserts. They

also offer a car hop service, but our group was too large and we were seated in a

special area where we could all be together.

We all had a great time and agreed this should be an annual event!

race cars.

His list includes: 1983 928, 1989 911, 1990 964 (race car), 1993 964, 1996 C4S, 1997 C4S,

2000 911 C4, 2003 GT2, 2005 Cayenne S, 2009 Cayenne GTS, 2007 Cayman (race car),

2010 Cayman (race car), 2011 Panamera, and a 2012 Panamera

CHARLES BELLUARDO

Charlie loves to drive and uses many of these Porsches to commute to his job in

the financial investment field. Most of these cars were not “garage queens” - to the contrary, Charlie drove many of these past the 100,000 mile mark. On his way, he took advantage of the PCA driver education system. Track days quickly became a cherished hobby, and, as he improved on his understanding the Porsche’s incredible performance “out of the box”, he also became aware of “enhancements”. These improvements become necessary when a driver begins to approach the limit on tire traction, brakes and suspension. Charlie’s first Porsche race car was his 1990 964. It ran in stock class PCA while still honing his skills at D.E. events. Charlie joined the NJMP drivers club, a country club for racers, in fact Charlie will always be known as being the first member ever, to join NJMP.

Personally, I never thought he would sell his 964, he was that good in it. I

remember my own experience of getting so used to a car, its reaction, adjustments, that letting it go might just be the end. But, it wasn’t for Charlie, it was a new beginning. He made the leap into a liquid cooled, mid-engine generation 1 Cayman (2006-2008 model years are gen 1),

Despite early learning curve bumps, Charles persevered and mastered the mid-

engine formula, in fact embraced it. He has gone on to a generation 2 Cayman which he currently campaigns in PCA racing GTB1 class. Charlie has had remarkable success in Porsche Club Racing. In 97 races he competed in, he won 29 of them! (Almost 30 %) and he has placed on the podium 46 times! that’s almost 50% of the races he competed in he finished either first second or third, pretty impressive.

Charlie has several track lap records to his credit, among them, New Jersey

Motorsports Thunderbolt circuit, stock I class and recently the GTB-1 lap record. And, not to be a one track wonder he has the track records at both Virginia International Raceway (VIR) and Watkins Glen, also in the “I” class. He has also gained respect from the folks at the track worker crew. They get to vote at every race whom they think is the best, first place or last, they choose, Charlie has won four such very coveted “Workers Choice” awards. Having provided trackside service for Charlie for many years we are all very proud to be associated with his race efforts, and fortunate to be able to provide for his and his families daily drivers. And, perhaps the most important, he has a lot of friends on and off the track, the true sign of a really good guy.



Jersey Shore 55th

Anniversary Celebration

We are returning to the site of our 50th celebration - The Oak Tree Lodge

in Wall Township on Saturday October 17, 2015.

We are planning a rally, Concours, car display, driving event, a tech quiz, and a charity raffle.

We already have one great prize for the raffle - a trip to the Porsche Driving Experience,

donated by Schneider+Nelson. If you have items to donate please contact Nick Trocchia as he

is the coordinating the raffle. If you are interested in putting your car in the Porsche display,

contact Lou Camissa.

There will be trophies for each event, and also overall trophies for the best combined scores

for all events.

There will be German inspired Ocktoberfest food and beer as well as soft drinks. Save the

date as this should be a great event! The 50th

was our best attended event in a long time and

we hope to do even better this time!

Monsoon season at Watkins Glen

Porsche Club racing moved to its spring venue, Watkins Glen in NY, hosted by the Reisentoter region the weekend following Memorial Day. The event started with club DE

days on Wednesday and Thursday, May 27th and 28th. One could not have asked for

more beautiful spring weather; it was cool in the evenings and warm under the upstate sun. Bodymotion tended to 16 different racers and cars. Despite the usual mechanical

gremlins and set up issues, all of the cars were fast and everyone enjoyed themselves.

On Friday the heat turned up, resulting in blazing hot temperatures prompting late day rain showers. The final day, Sunday, was for the enduro races. The skies opened up with around 3 inches of rain throughout the afternoon. The race was halted at the

35 minute mark due to dense fog that rolled into and parked on the Watkins Glen hillside.

The Bodymotion band of racers captured track lap records, podiums, and dozens of class wins (see our new feature “Racers Spot light” on page 14 for more on this event).

During the first full week of summer, June 28-30th, we were back at the historic

Glen road course for the Sahlens Six Hour race at the Glen. We practiced our IMSA Continental Challenge #31 Porsche Cayman in beautiful blue sky weather on Thursday

and Friday. Our drivers managed a 2:09.58 qualifying time to place us in the fourth row

of the ST field to start on Saturday.

It then rained from 7:00 am Saturday all through our 3 hour race and continued into

Sundays Six Hour Tudor race. Our race ended under caution due to heavy rain, same

as the Tudor race on Sunday. We felt as Joey Hand and Scott Pruett must have, “if it

only went back to green”. They finished second, we finished 9th. We maintain our fourth place point position, however we managed to narrow the gap to third position.

Our next venue will be in Canada at Canadian Motorsport Park, at the famous

Mosport circuit on July 11th. Be sure to watch the #31 Porsche Cayman at Mosport live

broadcast: streaming online 7/11/15 at 1:25 PM - 03:55 PM ET on www.IMSA.com, or

on television 7/19/15 at 12:00 - 2:00 PM ET on FOX Sports 1.
