MAY 5, DR. PHILIP DREYFUS by SF Rotary Webmaster
Philip Dreyfus is an Associate Professor of History at San Francisco State
University. He received his Ph.D. in American History from the Graduate
Center of the City University of New York in 1993.
He did not follow a direct academic path from college to the doctorate, but
spent years working alternately as a baker, an electrician, and a community
advocate for the elderly poor. As the first American-born in a family of post-
World War II French immigrants, he has always been a gatherer of stories. In
graduate school and for years thereafter, Dr. Dreyfus focused primarily on
labor militancy, political radicalism, and the intersection of ethnic, national,
and class identities.
After leaving New York City for the San Francisco Bay Area, he offered
courses in US labor history and African-American history at San Francisco
State University and the California State University at Hayward,
respectively. By the end of the 1990s, his intellectual interests had migrated
to the young field of environmental history. He began offering courses in
American environmental history and the history of California cities at San
Francisco State University, and has received numerous meritorious teaching
awards. Dr. Dreyfus has twice been a lead speaker at the Fulbright
Commission American Studies Summer Institute for German University
Teachers, where he led a seminar titled "The Wilderness and the Garden:

ROTOVISION MATCHING GRANT by SF Rotary Webmaster
"We are more than half-way there", says Michael Wolfe, talking about the
Rotavision Matching Grant for Lumbini, Nepal. The ERG (electro-
retinogram) machine has been delivered to the Lumbini Eye Hospital. This is
a device that tests the retina and optic nerve function and measures the
electrical response to light input. The machine diagnoses hereditary eye
diseases that doctors cannot otherwise recognize. This machine will be used
by physicians throughout Nepal and some areas in neighboring India.
The next step, according to Rotavision physician and founder Otis Paul, MD,
is to have the ERG set up in the clinic and tested. August Reader MD,
rotavision medical director, will go to Nepal and provide some advanced
training in the use of the machine.
Planning for the purchase of this machine began on a Rotavision trip
September 2007 when Dr. Paul and Michael Wolfe visited Nepal and
attended the opening of the Lumbini Eye Hospital Pediatric Eye Clinic. They
saw the need for this equipment and met with members of the The Rotary
Club of Lumbini Siddharthanagar to begin working on the grant.
A special thanks to The SEVA Foundation who founded this hospital, made a
generous donation to our Rotary club for this project, and assured that the
machine was delivered safely.
