AREA ADMINISTRATOR & EDITORIAL

Several items come to mind as I write this month.

Open Days are good opportunities to catch up with the latest, to talk to other people about research (theirs and yours), to obtain information, and many other things. Please note in your diaries the following .....

Saturday 2 October at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum - Warrnambool Area Open Day, with special focus on Shipping Information: 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.

Saturday 24 October at World Vision Centre, 1 Vision Drive, Burwood - AlGS Open Day: 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.

In News from HQ, it has been announced that the AlGS will be moving to the 1930s National Trust building, the Box Hill Town Hall in the new year. A 5-fold increase in space will be of great benefit to the Institute, the Library, and the users. Working alongside the Box Hill Historical Society is also seen as an advantage.

It was decided at our Area Meeting that a questionnaire should be sent to all members/subscribers seeking views on a range of issues related to our operations. Please respond to the enclosed item this month, returning your completed questionnaire by hand or to P. O. Box 607. We look forward to having your suggestions.

This month's Newsletter contains the Standard items for September 1899 and 1924, again compiled by Betty Beavis. While the items are of interest for the facts that they contain, taken collectively, they present an interesting picture of society as it then existed.

The unfolding story of Edward MAHON (MAHONEY) provides advice which we might all heed.

The monthly instalment of entries from the original Register of Warrnambool Agricultural High School runs to two pages this time, and completes the contents of the first book, covering the period from the opening of the school in April 1907 to May 1915. The next Register available begins in 1920 - as archivist, I have not been able to find the one covering the May 1915 to 1920 period.

As promised last month, the list of those whose photos appear on the Pioneers Board is included this month.

Remember - have your say by returning your questionnaire.

Best wishes for a successful month of searching!

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

Edward MAHON’s story, as told to the Standard, shows how simply we might be led astray and follow the wrong clues in our research. So, be aware! Now read on ….

A cab driver named Edward Mahon, who is in the employ of Messrs Armstrong and Fraser, is likely to come in for a good deal of property and money in Ireland. It seems that inquiries have been made to trace his father for the past three years without success. A letter came addressed to James Mahoney, Wicklow Cottage, Winslow, and it was requested that the parish priest should endeavour to find the missing man. The Rev Father Logan tried to do this, without avail, till Monaghan, the groom at the Presbytery, suggested that it might have been the father of Mahon the cab-driver, whose house at Winslow was many years ago named "Wicklow Cottage". The surmise proved to be correct. Mahon's father did reside at Winslow, and his house was named "Wicklow Cottage". Further, it appears that his real name was Mahoney, but when he came to Australia he called himself Mahon, dropping the last syllable of his name. Mahoney has been dead for many years, but his widow is still alive, and she states that her husband frequently spoke of having wealthy relatives in Ireland, and that he had told her his proper name was Mahoney. Her son also remembers his father saying that he was born in Wicklow, and that he had a rich uncle at Waterford. About 27 years ago an effort was made to trace Mahoney. It is evident that the person inquired for is the same as he who lived at Winslow, and yesterday proofs of identity and other papers were forwarded to Dublin. The inquiries were instituted by a cousin of Edward MAHON or MAHONEY.

The above article appeared in the "Warrnambool Standard" of September 19, 1899.
