SACRED HEART WADSWORTH, OHIO This First Sunday of Advent offers us, again, the opportunity to reflect on the coming of Jesus Christ in all His glory at the end of time. This is what Advent is truly all about: our eager anticipation of the return of Jesus and the final establishment of the eternal kingdom of God. The Church places this season just prior to Christmas when we, of course, celebrate the first coming of Jesus. It is often sad how the world uses this holy season just to prepare for the celebration of Christmas Day, with so much emphasis on the secular and commercial aspects

of this great feast. Then we miss the real celebration of the Christmas Season by acting like it is all over at the end of the day on December 25th. Advent is a time of prayer and to some degree, penance. Although it is not strictly a penitential season like Lent, it is a time for us to reflect on how our sins keep us from being truly prepared for the coming of Christ when we will actually see Him face to face. There are many ways that we can truly make the best of this holy season both as individuals and as families. We should think about possibly attending Mass a few extra times during the week, make sure that we receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation (our parish communal Penance Service is on Wednesday, December 11, at 7 PM), spend more time in prayer as a family by praying the Rosary together a few times a week or even every day after supper, and we can always make the added effort to help those less fortunate than ourselves. The idea is to do things that keep us focused on the presence of Christ in our midst and not let ourselves get caught up in all the anxious activity that this season seems to generate in the world. Again, I recommend the web site of Dynamic Catholic to help you and your family make this Advent the best ever. Simply go to the web site BestAdventEver.com and sign up. You will receive helpful reflections and prayer ideas, as well as practical things that can help you and your family rediscover Christmas. These daily emails will help you to slow down in the midst of all the busy things to do so that the Advent Season does not slip by without helping you to prepare to encounter Jesus as He comes into our world again and again. Everything does not have to get done by December 24th or 25th. Sending cards and giving gifts might be better left so that they arrive during the Christmas Season, which is 12 days long, just like the Christmas carol tells us. I always send my Christmas cards out so that they are received during the 12 days of Christmas. There does not have to be a “Christmas rush” if we don’t want to buy into the ways of the world. It is sad to think that most, if not all, Christmas Parties are held during the Advent Season and not the Christmas Season. Think about how you and your family will spend the Season of Advent. Try to make it a season of prayer and preparation for the coming of Christ by welcoming Him more deeply into your life all the year round. Try to make the Christmas Season a time when we really celebrate the birth of Christ with 12 days of rejoicing. Maybe we cannot change everything at one time, but just try to make a change or two every year until you are celebrating Advent in the way it is meant to be celebrated and celebrate Christmas WHEN it should really be celebrated. I pray that you and your family will have a holy and prayerful Advent this year. Since Christmas is still four weeks away, I ask that you and your family consider when you will come to Mass for Christmas. The vigils for Christmas are meant for those who cannot attend Mass on Christmas Day due to their work or job responsibilities. Unfortunately, they have become Masses of convenience and seem to be used to get Mass “done” so we can move on to the real celebration of Christmas. I would strongly recommend that you consider bringing your children to Mass on Christmas Day. We have been trying for several years to have our Children’s Choir sing at this Mass, but it is extremely difficult to put a choir together when so many go to Mass on Christmas Eve. This is an excellent way of teaching children that Jesus is the center of our Christmas celebration and not opening our gifts. When I was a child we opened our gifts on Christmas morning, as many do, and then, when it was time, my parents told us to put the gifts away and get ready for Church which was at 8:30 AM. This taught me that Jesus is the center of our Christmas celebration and to worship Him on Christmas Day is a very important thing to do. Just something to think about. Each December the parishes across the United States take up a second collection for the retired religious sisters, brothers, and priests. These are the religious men and women who have followed the call of God into the vowed religious life. They have left all things to live lives of poverty, chastity and obedience. These are the religious women and men who taught in our grade schools, high schools and colleges; they have served the Church in hospitals, orphanages, and other institutions where they cared for the poor and the sick. They did all this for many years for very little compensation, and so in their elderly years they need our help. PLEASE be generous next week in this annual appeal to help them as they helped so many of us.

ADVENT IS A PREPARATION for love of God and joy in God to reign in our heart. Pope Francis reminds, “The goal of our existence is not death, it is paradise! Sanctity is beautiful! It is a beautiful way! Sanctity is a vocation for everyone.” You are invited to receive a little book, Can We Be Saints?, and consider its points in group discussion each Sunday of Advent following the 8am Mass (9 to 9:30) in the Andes room. Receive your free book ahead of time by calling 330-336-0612 or 330-335-5203, courtesy of the Legion of Mary in celebration of its 60th anniversary at Sacred Heart.

Pope Francis reminds us all to live mercifully. You are invited to join the Catholic Commission of Wayne-Ashland-Medina in signing Christmas cards for the inmates on death row and in our local jails. We will gather at Holy Martyrs Parish in Medina after the 5:30 pm Mass on Saturday, December 7 in Pfeifer Hall. Refreshments will be served. We will close with a prayer service giving thanks for God’s mercy and celebrating Christ’s love in our outreach and justice ministries. For further information, call Paul Kipfstuhl at 330-703-7979.

First Sunday of Advent The coming of the Son of Man will repeat what happened in Noah’s time. In the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and being married, right up to the day Noah entered the ark. They were totally unconcerned until the flood came and destroyed them. So will it be at the coming of the Son of Man. Two men will be out in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. Two women will be grinding meal; one will be taken and one will be left. Stay awake, therefore! You cannot know the day your Lord is coming. “Be sure of this: if the owner knew when the thief was coming he would keep a watchful eye and not allow his house to be broken into.” You must be prepared in the same way. The Son of Man is coming at the time you least expect. SCRIPTURE READING REFLECTIONS OF THE WEEK – DECEMBER 1, 2019

On Tuesday, December 3, 2019, from 12:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m., Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish and Sacred Heart of Jesus School are participating in #weGiveCatholic, Northeast Ohio’s Online Day of Catholic Giving. Please support us with your donation on that day by going to www.wegivecatholic.org, search for Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish or Sacred Heart of Jesus School, then click “Donate."

This year, donations to the school made on Giving Tuesday will be used to purchase Chromebooks for our 7th and 8th grade students. Based on our enrollment, we have set a goal of $8,000. This would allow each student to have their own Chromebook for classroom use. Please support the Catholic education of our youth on December 3, 2019.

Donations made to the church on Giving Tuesday will be used to purchase two HVAC systems for the church. Our goal is to raise $50,000 to cover the cost of both units.

We continue to count on your generous and sacrificial spirit so that we can continue to be good stewards of all that God has given us. We have accomplished so much here at Sacred Heart only because of your willingness to share God’s blessings. Please be generous on Giving Tuesday, Northeast Ohio's day of Catholic giving, #weGiveCatholic.

*Tossed salad, freshly baked rolls, scalloped potatoes,

California medley vegetables, coffee, hot tea, and iced tea will

be served with each entrée. Dessert will be provided by the

Altar & Rosary Society.

In the spirit of the holidays, The St. Vincent de Paul Society is sponsoring the Giving Tree located in the Chapel. The green Giving Tree mittens are for the pregnancy center and the red Giving Tree mittens are for those families from our own parish and for our community. We encourage parishioners to purchase the requested

items, wrap them, and return them to the chapel with the mitten attached. Gifts will be distributed in mid-December. Thank you for your support!
