From the EditorIt has been a hot and rainy summer. But we still enjoyed our Schipperkes! It will be important to attend our Fall Specialty and Annual Meeting at the Howard County Fairgrounds on October 13 to support our exhibitors, elect our 2019 Officers and Board, and discuss our direction for our upcoming 50th year and beyond. Much of our members' news is on the club's Facebook site rather than the SchipScoop now, so check that and other online sources for more information. Please also send your obituaries and pictures for your dear Schipperkes (or Honorary Schips) who have passed away during the year by December 1 for the Winter commemorative issue.

The Inside ScoopThank you to MaryAnn and Ed Simanek, Pat Small, Judith Swan, Susan Edwards, and Michele O'Callaghan for their articles and show results. Thanks also go to new member Linda Bellile for her article about her Schips past and present. We appreciate information from Susan Fogleman on SchipperkeRescue.net's significant increase in their number of needy Schipperkes and hope you can give them extra support. Special thanks go to Carol Burnett for her numerous articles and research onbehalf of the club.

Upcoming EventsOur Fall Regional Specialty and Annual Meeting will be at the Howard County Fairgrounds on Saturday,October 13, 2018. This is one of the Club's long-standing traditions, and we hope you can attend. We also will have our Annual Meeting and elections following the Schipperke judging. Please see the article on page 3 for more information.

CSC Secretary Needed! We are sorry to lose our club secretary, Karen Martino. The CSC will need a new secretary as of October 13. Karen Martino and Carol Burnett will provide guidance. Please help! It's an important job. See page 2 for more information.

Help Wanted – Webmaster The CSC still needs a webmaster. Free instruction available! Please contact Carol Burnett.

Schip Scoop Editor Needs Help Terry Hale will be leaving the area upon her husband's retirement and will no longer be able to produce the Schip Scoop alone. Can someone help with providing an article? Can someone help prepare part of an issue for publication? Could you set the Schip Scoop up to be an e-magazine? Having help could make the difference between continuing the Scoop or not in the coming year. You don't have to do the whole thing. Just help – it could make a big difference!

Please contact Terry or our club secretary.

2019 CSC Officers and Board of Directors Candidates

The following CSC members have been nominated for the positions of Officers and Board of Directors for the October 2018 - October 2019 year:

President: Cathy Thistle Secretary: No CandidateVice President: Carie Wohl Treasurer: Carol Burnett

Board Members: Wanda Singhass, Joani DeHaven, and April de Bremond

Candidates were chosen by consensus and personal agreement rather than by a nominating committee.

Additional nominations will be accepted by the secretary until October 1. The election for new officers will be at the annual meeting, which will be held following the CSC Schipperke Specialty at the Howard County Fairgrounds on Saturday, October 13, 2018.

You will notice that we have no candidate for secretary. We have had difficulty finding people to fill some of the positions of Officers and Board of Directors in the past. Times are changing. People are busy. But the Constitution and By-Laws of the Colonial Schipperke Club have not changed. While we may survive with an interim secretary, that will not do in the long run. Could you help?

The CSC Needs a Secretary

Our current secretary for several years, Karen Martino, can’t continue as secretary because of family obligations. The secretary is a member of the club’s seven-member Board of Directors, and is elected each October to serve the following calendar year. The job is mostly done via email. The major duties include: -- Checking the club’s email account ([email protected]) about once a week. The club generally only receives 3-4 emails a month, and most of those are from people looking for a Schipperke. We have a stock response. -- Sending out emails to club members with details about the two SchipNics and two Specialty shows each year. -- Polling members via email when a new member applies, and then sending the new members a welcome letter, which has already been written. -- Taking attendance and minutes at our SchipNics and show meetings. If you’d like to know more or volunteer for this important job in the club, please respond to the club’s email [email protected] or contact the club president, Cathy Thistle.

2019 Dues and Schip Scoop Renewals

It’s membership dues and Scoop subscription renewal time soon. You’ll receive a form in late November from the email address [email protected], our club’s official account. If you don’t receive a renewal notice, please contact our club treasurer, Carol Burnett, [email protected] (703) 534-0381 and she will send you the renewal form.

Membership dues are $25 each and $45 for a family, and include a subscription to The Schip Scoop newsletter. The Schip Scoop subscription renewals alone are $15 each. Checks should be sent to Carolat 1921 N. Westmoreland St., Arlington, VA 22213 by December 31.

Your support of the Colonial Schipperke Club, which marks its 50th anniversary in 2019, is highly valued. We hope you will continue to support us, as well as make time to participate in our 2019 events and activities. In 2019, we will sponsor two SchipNics – one in Virginia and one in Maryland – and host two regional specialty shows. See the next issue of the Schip Scoop for the dates.

As you renew your membership, please take the time to consider donating to SchipperkeRescue.net (SRN). SRN provides support services for homeless Schipperkes, who receive foster care, medical care, and other services for until the right forever family comes to adopt them. SRN's needs are especially high right now.

This year for tax purposes, we need to ask you to write a separate check to SRN. We are sorry, but you can no longer write just a single check for CSC dues and an SRN donation. But you can put both checks in the same envelope to CSC, and we will pass along all the donations to SRN. SRN is tax-exempt, and you will be sent a letter for your tax records.

Colonial Schipperke Club Specialty, Howard County, October 13, 2018

The CSC needs help for the Howard County Show!

We need someone to help our Show Chair MaryAnn Simanek with the prize table, taking prizes to the ring steward, and packing up afterward. It isn't difficult. MaryAnn will provide direction.

We need help with the hospitality tables - setting up tables and arranging the food, plates and utensils. It might be a good idea to bring a heavy duty extension cord and duct tape.

CSC information hostess Carol Burnett could use help in bringing in the CSC banner, the raffle materials, and the box of club information and previous issues of the Schip Scoop. There is often a need for a quick sign to be made with a magic marker on plain paper, taped to an appropriate surface.

Many hands make light work. Also, sometimes one needs to be in two places at once. A helper makes all the difference. You can still see the show. Please email Carol Burnett or MaryAnn Simanek to help.

2018 Fall SchipNic

The 2018 Fall SchipNic at Olney, MD was rescheduled to September 22 due to Hurricane Florence. It was a gray day, but we still had a fine time with friends old and new. There were 20 club members, 17guests, and 23 Schipperkes. People brought lovely covered dishes. Carol Burnett grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, and veggie burgers. Just a few (ha!) of the Schips had tiny (ha!) treats of people food.

We appreciate the effort that people made to attend. Some drove from New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Joe and Joanna Ortiz ran a 10 k race earlier in the day. Martha Geaney and Bill Reichert fromFlorida came to the May SchipNic, but couldn’t come this time because I-95 still closed in North Carolina due to Hurricane Florence.

After our meal, we had the raffle with young ScottGertner drawing the tickets. Tom Barlow fromMaryland won the wooden Schip donated by DonNielsen. Pat Tak Brown from New Jersey won the gift

basket, and Marie-ThereseHensel won the 2019 Schipperkecalendar. Abby Gertner, CherylParker, Henry Carter, QuintinSalie and Terry Hale won totebags -- donated by Carie Wohl -- Scott, Carol, Brendan, Tom, Sadie, and Lacyfrom the 2018 Schipperke Club of America Nationals. Terry Hale requested help for our Show Chair,MaryAnn Simanek, for the Howard Countyshow and provided a page with maps andcontact information. She also showed examples of t-shirts and polos

Marie-Therese with embroidered CSC logos for ordering. CSC logo shirtsIn the process, we missed our usual group photo in spite of Stephanie Woodrow's reminder!

Thanks to Joani DeHaven for getting to the picnic site at 9 a.m. to save the area for us, and to Karen Martino for doing a super job of selling raffle tickets. We look forward to seeing everyone at the CSC Regional Specialty at the Howard County Fairgrounds Saturday, October 13.

Right side up or upside down, the Schips had a good time. Olin, Zoopi, Gabby, and Cheryl

The Fall SchipNic at Olney, MD was rescheduled due to Hurricane Florence.Suppose we had to evacuate due to a storm or disaster? Here is an important reminder from Deb Dellamonica, President, Schipperke Club of America.

SCA Board Notice PLAN AND PREPARE

If an evacuation is ordered, know your local hurricane evacuation route and have a plan for where youcan stay with your pets. The plan should include a designated safe meeting place and out of town emergency contacts.

Web Link for Pet Friendly Shelters http://petfriendlytravel.com/pet_shelters

The safest place for your pets is with you, but not all shelters accommodate pets. Plan ahead! If you are in need of shelter, please refer to this helpful website https://www.bringfido.com for pet-friendly emergency sheltering by state. The plan should include designated safe meeting places and out of town emergency contacts.

EMERGENCY SUPPLIES Be sure to stock essential supplies in case you lose power and water for several days or you are not able to leave due to flooding or impassable roadways. Supplies would include:

Important documents Pet Supplies: crate, food, microchip information, vet Medications records and a color photograph of you and your pet Personal identification 3 days of fresh water for you and your pet Flashlight and batteries First aid supplies Cash Fully charged cell phone

EVACUATION INFORMATION Do NOT leave your pet at home alone. The safest place for your pet to be is with you! Most evacuations last only a few days, but sometimes you may not be able to return to your home quickly because of fallen power lines and other hazards. Your pet should wear a collar with its rabies tag and identification collar tag at all times and have a sturdy crate or carrier for emergency transport. Are you registered with AKC Reunite? Published by SRN Rescue Coordinator Susan Fogleman on Facebook

SchipperkeRescue.net is now host to multiple Schipperkes, most of which will remain wards of rescue for life due to medical conditions. SRN added 17 new photos to their album on 8/9/2018.

A new group of rescues came to SRN in June and July with serious, expensive and projected long-term medical needs. Medical expenses hit a high not seen since the KY 39 project (the rescue of 39 Schipperkes from Kentucky in 2009). Total expenses have exceeded $10,000. Additional expenses were expected to exceed $3000 in August alone. This does not include expenses for September and beyond. It also does not include unplanned medical treatment for old life-long rescues in our care.

This sudden jump in expenses and resulting drop of funds has set SRN up for the sad day that we couldbe forced to pass over the next Schipperke in need of medical care.

We are happy to announce that some of the lost revenue has come back to us in the form of a $5000 grant from the SCA Health and Rescue Foundation. We are grateful for this and all donations and support from our Schipperke community. We continue to press on with our mission to never leave behind any Schipperke in need just because of medical needs or age. With your support we have and will continue to care for the many older/medical needs Schips that remain in our care.

If you would like to be a part giving these special babies the care they need to live happy lives, please consider a tax deductible donation to http://www.schipperkerescue.net/donate.html.

We sadly announce the recent loss of the following sweethearts which were in our care: Shadoe - Lived 17 months of a happy life with only a 3 month life expectancy Honey/Bella - Abandoned with severe heart disease and liver failure, we were able to stabilize her and allow her to feel loved and wanted before her heart could take no more. It wasn’t long enough, but it was long enough for her to forget the feeling of being lost, locked up in a shelter. Bubba - Congestive heart failure

Those that remain in our care: Wilson - Aortic dissection, IVDD Buster - 11 yrs, pemphigus foliaceus [skin autoimmune condition characterized by blisters, loss of coat and pain] Rocky - 15 yrs, multiple mass removals, cyst removal from thorax, hernia repair, arthritis/hip problems Rosie - 13 yrs, enlarged heart, abdominal mass removals, fibrotic tissue of the lungs, non- repairable breakdown of left knee Jessie - Severe alopecia, removal of 2 large mammary masses, social adjustment weakness Toby - 9 yrs, non operable tumors under the spine and near the heart

Brags and CongratulationsHere are some updates on our members' and subscribers' accomplishments since the last issue!

Pat Small

Jester and I are having a great time participating in various activities. Jester officially earned his RATCH(Rat Champion) under judge Shannon Forbes at the Merrimac Dog Training Club (MDTC) Barn Hunt Trial on June 9, 2018. He also has four legs towards his RATCHX which we hope to earn in the next twomonths. At the MDTC rally trial on June 16, under judge Joanie Brobst, he earned his Rally Master title(RM). At the Charlottesville-Albemarle Kennel Club Scent Work Trial on June 24 under Judge Candace Gartland he earned his first AKC scent element title SCN (scent container novice). Also at the MDTC's first AKC scent work trial on July 28 he earned his second AKC scent element title SIN (Scent Interior Novice) also under judge Candace Gartland.

With all registries accepted, my handsome Jester's official title would be:AKC UKC RATCH Foxnoir No Joking Aned CDX BN RM NA NAJ CGC TKN NW1 SCN SIN ATD CRAZ8S.

He needs one more Q (qualifying run) in both exterior and buried elements to complete his SWN (scent work novice) title. You have to earn a title in each individual element to obtain the Scent Work Novice title. The individual elements are containers; interior, exterior and buried. In a few weeks we will be competing for our Advanced Container and Advanced Interior titles at the Langley Kennel Club Trial, if our entries are accepted. It can be difficult to actually participate in these trials as the entries are limited. Sometimes you are accepted by early entry. Sometimes it is the luck of the draw. We will have our fingers crossed for the Langley Trial.

A little about scent work: at the novice level you have one hide and no distractions with a 2 minute time limit. At the advanced level, you have 2 hides, a non-food distraction and 2 minute time limit. I am glad it is not a food distraction at this level, as Jester is so food- motivated that he would go for thefood!

At the MDTC scent trial we met up with Theresa Metzand Stella who happens to be Jester's daughter. Wehad a great time visiting and competing with eachother. Stella has lots more scent titles than Jester, butwe will catch up with her some day.

Attached is a photo taken at the trial. Unfortunatelythe photo was taken before the ribbons for thesecond trial were handed out so not all of them aredisplayed in this photo.

Thanks again to Cathy Thistle for giving me theopportunity to enjoy this wonderful fur baby! Pat and Jester, Teri and Stella at the MDTC trial

SCA Changes RegionsThe Schipperke Club of America, the parent club of the Colonial Schipperke Club, has reduced the number of regions from three to two. The SCA now has just West and East regions. The previous Central Region was divided between the West and East.

There had been four clubs each in theWest and Central regions and only twoclubs, including the Colonial Club, inthe East Region. Because the SCAalternates the National Specialtybetween regions, the previous 3-regionconfiguration meant there were onlytwo clubs -- Colonial and Erie Canal --available to host the Nationals in theEast.

Now there are five regional clubs ineach of the West and East regions. TheNational Specialty will rotate betweenthe East and West, with the 2019Specialty being in southern Californiaand the 2020 event in Michigan.

Meet the New MemberWelcome to our new member, Linda Bellile! Transplanted from Washington State to Pennsylvania, Linda has been involved with Schipperkes since the 1960s. Her introduction here just scratches the surface of her involvement with Schips.

My earliest memories of seeing Schips was at a Canadian showwhen I was 19 years old. I was smitten. I purchased my firstSchip when I was 23 years old and have been with at least twoever since, through divorces and life’s unexpected flow. Back inthose days, I was showing Shelties, but those darn Schips didattract me. We are talking about the 1960s, here. Yikes.

I have been active in conformation for many years. In 2003 mybitch Ch Dante’s Dancing in the Dark, Dancer, was a SCA BISSwinner. Dancer was 2006 SCA Best of Opposite Sex to her sonthat I bred who was #1 SCA Schipperke, Cysco, BISS CHBraewood’s Dancetotherisenson HOF. Those were the gloryyears for sure! Dancer

I was an active member of the Cascade Schipperke Club out of Seattle many years until I moved to Millersville, PA in 2015. I continue to be involved in some capacity with showing dogs, but I have slowed down. Currently I have three Schips of which 2 are champions and one performance boy is neutered. My other dog looks like an oversized Schip with a tail and is a Norwegian Buhund.

Access to training facilities is not as convenient in Pennsylvania as in Washington state. With the fixed income of retirement, I need to be careful with the dog spending that can easily get out of control.

My life has taken a different direction with retirement as I have become active in politics in the last couple of years. Inow am a member of the Millersville Borough Council. I simply do the things that I enjoy these days. I volunteer

Cysco for a pet therapy group with myBuhund. I am also a membership director of a historic club and write newsreleases for the Lancaster Civil War Round Table. After so many years ofworking hard with long hours, now my spare time is blissful. My most favoritething of all is sleeping in often. But one doesn’t take the dog out of the girl.

Oh, the glory days of Dancer and Cysco. Sometimes looking back is veryenjoyable. But looking forward is also exciting, with so many things to do andso little time. LindaLinda Bellile, June 31, 2018

Meet the New PuppyFrom Guinness to Reilly - an O’Callaghan Schipperke Saga Michele O'Callaghan 9/19/2018

It’s funny how sometimes the greatest things come about during theworst of times. This is what happened to our family earlier this summerwhen we had to put our beloved 15 year old Schipperke, Guinness, tosleep. The longest loving relationship I ever had in my life was withGuinness. I even think that Guinness opened my heart to allow myhusband Brendan in! I have every confidence that Brendan and I willsurpass my 15 year record with Guinness. Michele, Brendan and Guinness

Guinness was a force of nature. He fought and beat pancreatitis more times than I’d like to count and seemed like he was going to live forever. We were so happy celebrating his 15th birthday because it represented such a milestone. But it also was the beginning of the end. He slowed down so much and we knew it was time when he would go over to his favorite toy, pick it up and look at us and then drop it because he didn’t have the strength or will to hold it or play.

Life after Guinness was a blur filled with many tears and aching hearts. In fact, we both were having such a difficult time and it was hard to look at his little beds, toys, bowls, crates and other things Guinness collected in his 15 years. In order to help with the grieving process, we packed up almost all of his things including food, medicine, toys, leashes, collars and took them to the local humane society. The folks at the humane society were so grateful. Brendan and I felt better for having donated the things in little Guinn’s name. You might be wondering – could the O’Callaghans live without a Schipperke in their lives even for just a few days? We thought the answer to that was yes and started reaching out to find out names of

Guinness' donation breeders to get on litter lists for 2019 or later. But as our aching hearts still yearned for the joy and consternation that is life with a Schipperke, I found out about a Schipperke in rescue in the Cleveland, OH area. I don’t recall how I found out about the rescue group, Marilyn’s Voice, or this little Schipperke in their care named Danny. Brendan and I talked about whether or not we ready for another Schipperke and if getting another Schipperke was dishonoring Guinn’s memory.

As we searched our souls about whether or not we could even fostera Schip, we learned more about Danny. He was a rescue that had hada difficult, short life. His first home was with people who didn’t orcouldn’t keep him; my guess is that they found out first-hand whatlife with a Schipperke puppy is all about and couldn’t handle it. Hissecond home was with a woman with health problems and 8 fosterchildren. To this day Reilly still has issues with children. He was witha local humane society or rescue league, and then ended up with hislonger-term foster home with Heather in Marilyn’s Voice. Thankgoodness for Heather and Marilyn’s Voice because it’s through themthat Danny found his forever or fur-ever home and name -Reilly O’Callaghan. Reilly going home We thought Reilly was younger than he actually turned out to be, as he will be 1 year old on October 2. His age doesn’t matter to us; we love him unconditionally. We drove out to Cleveland the second weekend after Guinness passed away and brought Reilly home to stay.

Reilly loves to cuddle and shows a joy for life. He can be a handful. Most importantly, he is filled to overflowing with love. He still likes to put his teeth on everything (as puppies do!) and he has just an

innate joy of being alive. His entire body wiggles with happiness. He chases butterflies and is curious about everything. He is apprehensive of children and we can happily offer him a safe and happy child-free existence. Brendan and I are both working on Reilly's obedience with formal classes as well as practice at home. He surprises me every day with his love of playing fetch. He will chase and retrieve a toy for minutes on end and never tires of the game. I was so used to Guinness who wanted to tug on the toy, have his human throw it one time and then he would take said toy and lay upon it so no one else could touch it. All things belonged to Guinness! Not little Reilly - he just plays and plays and plays and is happy to share his toys with us. He loves to go for walks and never seems to tire. However, when it’s time for bed he falls fast asleep…that is until his internal alarm clock goes off the next morning and he’s up and at it full of wiggles and licks. I forgot to mention something monumental – Reilly has a tail! It’s so strange for us to be arounda dog with a tail. It curls up and it’s an extension of his wiggly and happy body.

Is he 100% Schipperke? We aren’t sure. For a Christmas present (for Brendan and me this year) we are going to get his DNA tested. He looks and acts like a Schipperke and finding out if he is mixed with anything won’t change the love we feel for him, but it will be fun to compare my DNA to Reilly’s. Goodness knows I’m a mix of many, many things, so I will never judge him if he turns out not to be100% Schipperke! As I write this, I’m both happy and sad.Sad that Guinness is gone from ourlives, never forgotten, but not with usanymore. I’m happy because each day Isee Reilly, he changes and grows andmakes me laugh. His joyful approach to

Reilly life is contagious. I’m also both happy and grateful that while Brendan is home recovering from a partial kneereplacement, Reilly is by his side reminding him to walk and enjoy life.Reilly-walks have become part of Brendan’s at-home physical therapy. At the end of the day, I’m so happy to know that even when our heartsare broken over the loss of a beloved Schipperke, that there is still roomto love another. Brendan used to joke that when the phone rang it wasReilly calling for Guinness to ask for his life back. Well, now little ReillyO’Callaghan is truly living the life of Reilly!
