Erika van der Merwe
Biography
Erika van der Merwe is CEO of the Southern African Venture Capital and Private Equity Association (SAVCA), a non-profit organisation whose objective is to promote venture capital and private equity in Southern Africa. She holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) accreditation and has a master’s degree in economics from Cambridge University and from the former University of Natal.
Stuart Bradly
Biography
Stuart has 18 years of private equity experience in Africa with CDC Capital Partners, Aureos Capital and Phatisa Group. He is the co-founder of Phatisa Group, which has over US$ 286 million of capital under management. During his career, Stuart has successfully raised over US$ 1 billion for private equity funds in Africa. Prior to founding Phatisa, Stuart was the managing partner of the US$ 50 million Aureos Southern Africa Fund in Johannesburg, South Africa. Before joining Aureos Capital, Stuart was the general manager of Takura Ventures in Zimbabwe, where he had overall responsibility for the Fund’s success.
John Hannig
Biography
John Hannig is a director of Metier and a principal of the Metier Capital Growth Fund II. John has a background in engineering and worked as a management consultant, first in process and systems consulting for Accenture and later in turnaround and strategy consulting for Gemini Consulting. John completed an MBA at UCT’s Graduate School of Business and gained additional credits from London Business School. He started his career in private equity with Metier ten years ago.
John Bellew
Biography
John specialises in all aspects of private equity, including fund formation, merger and acquisition activity, management arrangements and acquisition finance. John is recognised as a leading practitioner/expert in Private Equity and M&A by a number of prominent journals, including Chambers Global, Legal 500, PLC Which Lawyer? and IFLR1000. John is a member of the Legal and Regulatory Committees of both the South African Venture Capital and Private Equity Association (SAVCA) and the African Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (AVCA).
Andrew Hall
Biography
Andrew is a founder of Trinitas. He has worked in the local private equity industry since 2001, post qualifying at KPMG and then working in investment banking in London with UBS and Credit Suisse. On his return to South Africa, Andrew began his private equity career with a listed PE fund, where he was senior portfolio manager responsible for all aspects of the private equity lifecycle. Andrew and his two partners founded Trinitas, a mid-market PE fund manager, in 2008. His experience spans a diverse range of industries, where he has served on a number of company boards.
Arnold van Wyk
Biography
Arnold completed his articles in 1999 at Deloitte, followed by a further three years in their corporate finance division. During his tenure at the firm, he was seconded for short periods first to the Connecticut (Hartford and Stamford) and later the Düsseldorf offices, gaining valuable experience in overseas markets. He joined the FirstRand group in 2003, initially as corporate banker at First National Bank and later as investment banker at Rand Merchant Bank, where he spent most of his banking career in the acquisition and leveraged finance space. During his career at RMB, he initially focussed on the South African market and was later instrumental in growing the franchise in the rest of Africa, with a specific focus on Nigeria and West Africa. Arnold joined RMB Corvest in April 2013 and is currently serving on the boards of, among others, Tolcon Group, G4S Cash Solutions, Provantage Media Group and SAVCA.
Michael Judin
Biography
Michael Judin is currently a senior partner in the Johannesburg based law firm, Judin Combrinck Inc. Michael is a director of, and legal adviser to, the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in South Africa. On 22 November 2006, Michael was inducted as an honorary life member of AmCham in recognition of exemplary leadership and dedicated service. Michael is deputy chairman of one company, and a non-executive director of another, quoted on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. Michael is admitted as an attorney in Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland, and is a member of the International Bar Association. He is also an associate member of the American Bar Association, where he acts as Co-Chairman of the Corporate Governance International Developments Sub-Committee. Michael is a member of the e-commerce advisory committee of the Financial Services Board of South Africa. He is a member of the Committee that wrote the Code for Responsible Investing In South Africa (CRISA), the Committee that wrote King III and the Task Team.

Lourens Campher
Biography
Lourens completed his articles at KPMG in 1989 and then joined Standard Merchant Bank for 4 years where he was initially involved in Corporate Banking and later on LBO’s and MBO’s. He then joined Absa Corporate and Merchant Bank where he specialized in structured finance. He left in 2003 and joined Calyon, part of Crédit Agricole, as representative for their structured finance division in SA. He was involved in a wide range of debt financing including securitizations, Euro Bonds, project finance and structured trade and commodity financing. He joined Investec in 2006 and was responsible for Aviation Finance – Commercial Airlines and Private Jet funding in Africa. He is currently responsible for Specialized Growth Finance at Investec which includes any debt funding solution for mid-sized corporates (net asset value between R125m and R1bn) and deal sizes between R50m and R1bn. His main focus is funding acquisitions, LBO’s and MBO’s, capital expenditure, working capital funding, debt restructuring and BEE funding.
Luc Albinski
Biography
Luc is a director of Vantage Mezzanine and a member of the Fund’s Investment Committee. His primary responsibility is the assessment, structuring, execution and post-transaction monitoring of the mezzanine fund investments. Luc has played a key role in all investments executed by Fund I and Fund II to date. Luc has an MBA from the INSEAD Business School in Fontainebleau, France. He studied for his undergraduate Economics degree at the Institute for Political Studies in Paris.
Ron den Besten
Biography
Ron is the Chairman of the Regional Advisory Council, Sub-Saharan Africa of the Abraaj Group. He joined the group in 2004, and was responsible for the $386 million Aureos Africa Fund’s Southern Africa region and the US$50 million Aureos Southern Africa Fund. He has over 18 years of private equity experience gained from institutions such as Gensec Bank Ltd. He has extensive experience in deal structuring, negotiations, strategic development of, and exit from African companies and serves on the boards of directors, audit-, remuneration-, social and ethics- and nomination committees as non-executive director of companies involved in industries such as financial services, fast moving consumer goods, agri-processing, chemicals, manufacturing and IT services. He is a Chartered Accountant, and holds a B Comm Honours Degree in Accounting from the University of Johannesburg.
Rory Ord
Biography
Rory has headed RisCura’s private equity advisory group since 2008, and is one of Africa’s leading experts in private equity investment. He regularly speaks on African private equity, as well as valuation, regulation and performance measurement. Rory also trains African pension fund trustees across the continent on private equity and is well known for several research reports on African private equity including the Bright Africa series of reports on equity investing on the continent, the RisCura SAVCA Southern Africa Private Equity Performance Report as well as the Search for Returns report which surveyed global investor attitudes to African private equity. Rory is a chartered accountant and previously worked at Deloitte in the United Kingdom and South Africa, and is based in Cape Town.

Thiru Pather is responsible for investments into Private Equity and Specialist Funds and co-investments with Fund Managers at the PIC. Thiru has been involved in Private Equity at the PIC for close to 6 years. Thiru is a Chartered Accountant by profession and has 11 years post articles experience, with 9 years in Private Equity and Corporate Finance. Biography
Mr. Tractenberg joined FMO’s Private Equity department in 2011, and is currently FMO’s Private Equity representative for Southern Africa. From 2008 to 2011, he worked at FMO’s Financial Institutions department where he was responsible for origination, due diligence and execution of structured finance transaction for FIs in Africa. From 2005 to 2008, Mr. Tractenberg worked for FMO’s Asia department where he was responsible for origination, due diligence and execution of structured finance transactions in South East Asia.Prior to joining FMO, Mr. Tractenberg worked for 13 years at ABN AMRO in Brazil and in The Netherlands. His last position was Head of Cross Border Structured Finance for Latin America, based out of Sao Paulo. Mr. Tractenberg has a MBA from Nijenrode and Rochester Universities and a Production Engineering degree from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

Craig Dreyer
Biography
Craig joined Ethos in 1998 as the Company’s Chief Financial Officer. Prior to this he was a partner of the Johannesburg office of the international auditing firm BDO. Craig is responsible for reporting, valuations, governance and administration of Ethos. He has served as a committee member of South African Venture Capital and Private Equity Association since 1998. Craig holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree in accounting and a post graduate Bachelor of Accounting degree from the University of Witwatersrand. He is a member of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants. Craig represented South Africa at the Fireball World Sailing Championships in San Francisco in 1984. Craig is a keen photographer and tries to ride a mountain bike. Craig is married to Linda and has two daughters.
Alex-Handrah Aime
Biography
Alex-Handrah Aimé is Managing Director of Emerging Capital Partners (ECP) based in the Johannesburg Office. With seven funds and over US$2 billion under management, ECP is a leading private equity manager focused exclusively on Africa. Prior to joining ECP in 2008, Ms. Aimé was with Goldman Sachs International in London in the European Special Situations Group, and previously in the Investment Banking Division - Financial Institutions Group. Ms. Aimé graduated cum laude from Harvard College with a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry. She obtained a J.D. with distinction from Stanford Law School and a MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
Graham Stokoe
Biography
Graham leads EY’s focus on the Private Equity sector across sub-Saharan Africa. He advises clients on the acquisition or sale of businesses in South Africa and across Sub-Saharan Africa and his experience includes buy and sell-side due diligence, M&A, working capital reports for stock exchange purposes, and advisory and support in respect to IPOs. Graham began his career with EY in London in 2004 and returned to South Africa in 2007. Graham’s eleven years of corporate finance experience has included advising PE and corporate clients on transactions in various sectors including consumer products, industrials, retail, telecoms, IT, education, mining services and real estate, among others. He has advised numerous global and African PE funds. Graham completed his BCom and BCom (Hons) at the University of Pretoria.
Patrycja Kula-Verster
Biography
Patrycja has been in the financial sector for a number of years. Her career started at Liberty as a financial advisor. She then began a business recovering international VAT and learnt a number of important entrepreneurial lessons. Thereafter, she moved to FNB where she managed a portfolio of business clients. Her next move was to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange where she has been for seven years. Her roles have been varied and she is now responsible for business development and has been tasked to encourage new listings on the exchange.
