Next Meeting November 10, 7pm ! Getting Comfortable with Street Photography presented by Nyla James If you've wanted to be part of the fastest growing genre in photography but was afraid to take the shot then let me show you how to become more confident shooting in the streets. When I first decided I wanted to try doing street photography, and you can probably guess why... I asked Bob (Ginn)... How do I start? I wanted to see what had kept his interest all these years. But his advice didn't seem to help me to get any braver when I was out there with strangers while holding a camera! I then began looking into street photography more and decided to try other people's ideas, advice and suggestions. My goal today is to try and help you get past the social blocks which I went through, and many others before that. If I do, then all my efforts here will be worth it. Our camera club members have many outstanding images that are gathering dust on their hard drives. Unfortunately, no one other than the photographers are seeing them and that’s a shame – because these noble images should be hanging in houses all around the area where hundreds of people could be enjoying them. Why not take these images from our hard drives and send them into the public as beautiful prints!

If you think about it, the best of our images are valuable cultural resources that can enhance our sense of wellbeing with their beautiful, insightful and unique ways of seeing the world around us. But they are gathering dust on our hard drives. As a club we can change that situation.

It would require making a hundred prints and sending them out into our local community. The social value of these one hundred prints could be amplified by creating a space on our web site where people could advertise those prints for swapping. Think about that for a moment. If there were one hundred large format prints of our club members best images, would you want to be one of the hundred people that were swapping those images among themselves? I certainly would. People might ask for more prints and the concept of buying and swapping prints could become a much appreciated part of our local culture

Making one hundred large format prints would be a lot of work for one person, but as a cooperative effort it could be fun. I can’t imagine anything more rewarding or more fun than making a hundred beautiful prints and sending them out into the community we live in, and then seeing them shared through our web site. Here are a few questions that you might have after reading this.

How would we go about “sending these prints out into the community”?

I’m sure there are many ways. We could give them away on the street. We could have an auction. But my preferred method would be an advertised show and sale of all the prints.

Are you purposing this to make money for the club? No - money isn’t that important. The true reasons for suggesting that our club do this are explained in the first three paragraphs of this letter, but I can summarize. With our images decorating their walls people will feel better because of their beautiful, insightful, and unique views of our world. If buying and trading prints of our images becomes a part of our local culture, the art of photography will be promoted as a public good, and our social fabric will be better.

Then why are you purposing to sell these one hundred prints? Why not just give them away? First, giving them away devalues the prints making it less likely people will take care of them. Second, it takes money to make the prints and the person that buys the print should pay for that. Third, the photographers that manage to capture the images deserve to be rewarded for their accomplishments.

What do you think? If you have an idea or opinion, send it to me, please. Best regards, Leo Loebs
