Dyno Runners, Formula SAE Engine DynamometerEsteban Berenguer, Thomas Elliott, Rick Galvan, Brooke MegeeEvery year in Lincoln, Nebraska, students throughout the country compete in the Formula SAE competition. Sixty percent of competition scoring is directly related to engine performance, which can be empirically measured for analysis via engine dy-namometer. This design allows direct engine coupling to a hydraulic vane pump on dual bearing pivot. Torque is measured via a Wheatstone Bridge load cell mounted to a cantilever moment arm, preventing the pump from rotating under engine load. Pump shaft speed is then measured to compute the engine power output at given engine speeds. The Hydraulic Brake Engine Dynamometer is an effective, afford-able tool which will give UTSA a competitive advantage in automotive racing and academic research.

Aqua Solutions, The CoalescerLamia Kabir, Chinonso Ovuegbe, Lina Hallgren, Dillon NeieThe Coalescer provides an efficient solution to prevent wasting water at Southwest Research Institute’s Ocean Simulation Lab. The lab’s chambers are filled with water from San Antonio water supply and drained once testing is done. The design uses coalescing media to separate control fluids and sediment from water, while lighter fluids float up for collection via oil skimmer. The system allows a maximum of 7500 gallons of water overnight for reuse by storing in a fresh water storage tank. The water is otherwise wasted by draining back into the SA sewer system and will save money by reducing water usage.

F.G. Engineering, Abrasive Water-Jet CutterDylan Kelly, Brian Kramer, Andres Olmos, Tomas F. Romero NavarreThe availability and sophistication of customized tools available in the commercial market have expanded the manufacturing capabilities and design choices across many industries. This has fueled a desire by small businesses and machinists to ob-tain scaled down models of their industrial counterparts, in order to stay competi-tive. The purpose of this project is to design and build a water-jet cutting machine for utilization by machinists or small businesses, where ownership was previously restricted by large equipment footprints and high cost. Our solution allows the cre-ation of a water-jet cutter within a footprint of 4’x4’x7’ tall, at a fraction of the cost.

RPM Engineering, 3D Plastic Filament ExtruderBenjamin Resendez, Franco Dukuze, Benneth Perez, Jazmin Garci, Rhoy GuajardoaEveryday there’s someone 3D printing and tossing support material. RPM’s goal is to reduce landfill waste and recycle excess plastic into new filament. The Mean Machine process consists of shredding the support material by means of a hand cranked shredder. The material is then extruded and the retreating filament is so-lidified in a water bath. Finally, it enters a feeder and winder to then be distributed evenly on a spool for immediate reuse. The design was developed to save energy and can be used by anyone responsible enough to handle heavy duty tools.

BAMS, Tray Alignment SystemBradley Hammond, Adam Stoll, Michael Mayer, Sarah KeltonA local manufacturer is experiencing an increase in downtime related to dropped trays within their automated gummy vitamin molding machine resulting in $250,000 losses per week. BAMS attributes this downtime to tray stack misalign-ment and has created the Iron Maiden. The Iron Maiden is installed immediately prior to the critical process step and corrects tray displacement. The device uses the mechanical advantage of a wedge to align, but not break trays. This solution de-creases downtime and reduces manufacturing overhead by eliminating tray drops.
