The Salem LIFE NEWSLETTER OF SALEM EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH SANDWICH, ILLINOIS JUNE 10, 2019 VOL. 46, NO. 6 T G R Dear Friend, “Do to others as you would have them do to you” (Luke 6:31) is our memory verse for this month. This teaching of Jesus is so important that it is often called “The Golden Rule.” It is important that we not only memorize these words of Jesus, but that we put these words into practice in our daily lives. How other people treat us should not determine how we treat them. It is human nature to be nice to those who are nice to us and want to hurt those who have hurt us. But Jesus tells us that we are to love all people, even those we might consider our enemies (see Matthew 5:44). We are to treat others not based on how they treat us, but on how we would want them to treat us. How do you want to be treated? This question is easy to answer. We don’t want people to treat us with disrespect, indifference, hurt, or hatred. We want other people to treat us with respect, compassion, kindness, and love. Every day we have many opportunities to put The Golden Rule into practice. No matter how other people treat us, we can treat them with respect, compassion, kindness, and love. After all, this is how we want to be treated. This teaching of Jesus is clear: “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” Your Friend in Christ,

Dear Friend,

“Do to others as you would have them do to you” (Luke 6:31) is our memory verse for this month.

This teaching of Jesus is clear: “Do to others as you would have them do to you.”

Your Friend in Christ,

JUNE COUNCIL MEETING HIGHLIGHTS The June 4th council meeting opened with devotions and prayer. Pastor Wayne gave his report. The minutes of the previous council meeting were approved.

The council: 1) discussed the block planters that we painted and what we will do for the “More on 34” event on June 14th and 15th; 2) discussed beginning a quilting group; 3) discussed having small groups (called “Melting Pots”) meet again; 4)

discussed the community worship services to be held this summer; 5) discussed painting a house in Sandwich this summer; 6) viewed photos of problem areas in our kitchen and discussed ways of making our congregational members aware of these problems; and 7) heard from Pastor Wayne that he will not be working for several days because of hernia surgery scheduled for June 14.

The calendar and worship attendance were reviewed. Reports from committees were given. The April financial reports were approved. For April, the General Fund had an income of $20,582 and expenses of $15,071 and the Capital Fund had an income of $7,291 and expenses of $6,342. The meeting was adjourned.

Summer Season to Begin for Handchimes & Praise Team —Both of these musical groups have begun their summer seasons with rehearsals on Monday evenings. Handchimes will rehearse on Mondays at 6:00 pm, and Praise Team will rehearse at 7:00 pm. Both groups are seeking new members. No experience is necessary—just show up!

Traditional Choir will rehearse through the summer months on an as needed basis. They also would welcome any interested singers. Their rehearsals are on Thursdays at 7:00 pm. Please see the weekly calendar for specific dates.

Thank you, Alleluia Choir! These faithful members of Salem’s Alleluia Choir have completed another choir season: Brandon Beverage, Grace Pearson, Joshua Schaefers and Pacey Wyant. They are directed by Nancy Rex, assisted by Sharon Wallis and accompanied by Gloria Gilbertson. We are grateful to them for sharing their talents with the congregation. They will resume in the fall.

Honoring Irene

On May 19 the congregation officially expressed appreciation to Irene Yingling for her many years of quilt ministry. Irene was presented with a monetary gift as well as a gift in her name to the Lutheran World Relief Shipping Fund. In addition, a brick will be placed in Salem’s prayer garden in Irene’s honor.

Come to the Garden Walk & Party! Plans are being made for gardens to visit, and an after-party will be held at the home of Dean & Dori Burau. Bring friends, a dish to pass, and any plant(s) you would like to swap. Let’s get together for fun & fellowship. Watch for final details and an opportunity to sign-up.

We will, of course, have to be flexible, depending on weather conditions.

JULY 7—Salem’s Worship Committee will host their annual ICE CREAM SOCIAL .

JULY 14—Come enjoy some spirited DRUMMING WITH ALAN !

You may remember hearing about or participating in Melting Pots a few years back. A small group of 8-10 people attended a kick-off, then planned 2 activities together. Some groups played board games, went to a museum, organized a Bible study, and made homemade sushi, just to name a few. The results were people got to know one another a little better and enjoyed the time together. “Reservation Slips” have been available on the Sundays in June, and you can put

these slips in the offering plate to let planners know you are interested. Alternatively, anyone who is interested in being part of a Melting Pot this summer is welcome to turn in their name and phone number to the church office by calling 815.786.9308. The kick-off will coincide with the Ice Cream Social on July 7 where you will meet your group and set dates, times, and activities for your next few meetings.

Sandwich Fourth of July Parade Float The theme for Salem’s parade float this year will be Psalm 23, The Lord Is My Shepherd , which is also the theme for our Vacation Bible School (July 22-25). Will you join us to create the float and to walk or ride in the parade? The parade is scheduled for Saturday, July 6 at 10:00 am. Line-up will be at the Sandwich Fairgrounds . We will create the float at the fair-grounds on Friday, July 5 at 6:00 pm.. We need your help. Please consider being part of the magic. See Jan Dunn, Mickey Farley or Bonnie Guyer for details.

Several church members have

expressed an interest in continuing

Salem’s quilt ministry following Irene

Yingling’s nearly two decades of

dedicated service to LWR. This project is

in its planning stage, but the basic idea is

to meet regularly as a group in one of the

Sunday School rooms to piece together

and assemble quilts. Those interested in

being included should contact Pat

Whitten or Melody Derber. Donations of

quilt fabric or money to purchase quilting

supplies would be much appreciated.
