This is going to highlight New Zealand and put our little country into focus for millions of viewers during the world cup competition, not to mention the anticipated 85,000 tourists who are expected to arrive during that period. I believe the exposure that New Zealand will get will encourage hundreds of people to think seriously about living in

New Zealand especially those visiting from South Africa. The residential property market is improving and I still believe that this is one of the best

times to buy. Houses will increase in value and while interest rates are still low it is a good time to buy. Interest rates however, will increase over the next 12 months. This will be a busy year for some with the Rugby World Cup as well as the elections only a month after the Rugby World cup Final. We have another message from John Key who always supports the magazine and the South African community as well as articles on rugby and a rugby competition. The Highland Park Shopping centre has taken out a number of adverts and we have some final advertising for the Barry Hilton show. Once again, a full mixed bag of advertisers and articles.

I have relinquished my duties of arranging the Biznet as well as the South African Social evenings and SANZ has now set up committees to run all functions as well as sports events and functions. (See page 20) Ted has done a great job fitting all the advertisers into 28 pages and balancing this with interesting articles. On 23 June, the NZ Herald reported on Mihirangi Forbes’ interview with Alasdair Thompson, who was Chief

Executive of the Employers and Manufacturers Association at the time. Thompson linked women’s productivity to menstruation and childbirth, saying that women take more sick leave than men, and that this accounted for the gender pay gap. His comments caused a national furore.

Diversity practices under Equal Employment Opportunity relates to all aspects of employment, including recruitment and hiring based on merit; flexible working options; pay and other rewards; career development and work conditions; promotion based on talent and fairness in the workplace.

Section 21 of the Human Rights Act prohibits discrimination on the grounds of sex and section 22 makes it unlawful to offer an applicant who is qualified for work less favourable terms of employment.

Equally, section 2A of the Equal Pay Act makes it unlawful for an employer to refuse to afford persons of the opposite sex the same terms of employment. This would include rates of pay. So the question is why do we have a gender pay gap in New Zealand and how big is the gap?

The answers are complex. Recent figures show that New Zealand women are being paid about 12 percent less than men. Researchers have found that productivity-related factors such as education and past work experience account for around one-third of the pay gap, as do occupation and industry; which shows lower average pay rates in female-dominated occupations. Motherhood and marriage also attract a “wage penalty”.

In 2000, Dixon undertook a detailed analysis of the gender gap in New Zealand. She found that the above factors accounted for between 40 to 80 percent of the pay gap, but commented that it should not be taken to imply that the “explained” portion was fair, efficient or justified. The other 20 percent was unaccounted for.

On 2 July, One News reported on a pay equity bill proposed by the Equal Employment Opportunities Commissioner, Dr Judy McGregor. The bill would entitle a woman doing the same work as a male colleague to know what he was being paid. McGregor was quoted as saying: “The transparency will enable women to negotiate, and it’ll also mean that employers won’t take the

risk of starting women on a lower differential than equivalent men.”The proposed bill will remove an employer’s ability to keep salaries secret.

It will enable men to ask about women’s or other men’s pay, and vice versa. If an employee felt they were being discriminated against, they could apply to a labour inspector and get compliance in terms of equal pay.

Although the bill has yet to be introduced to Parliament, several of the major political parties have indicated their support. If the bill becomes law, it is likely that women and men will at least be on pay parity for like work.

The Rugby World Cup is an unprecedented opportunity for us to showcase the best of New Zealand to the world. It’s

a perfect opportunity to increase tourism numbers and boost business long after the final whistle.

We’re expecting about 85,000 international visitors over the six-week tournament, and millions more will be watching from home. In addition to the match schedule, the REAL New Zealand Festival will be showcasing communities all over the country.

New Zealanders are passionate about sport and it’s great to see everyone getting behind the World Cup. I know many of you in our South African communities are big rugby fans and will be looking forward to the World Cup. I look forward to seeing both the All Blacks and the Springboks show off their skills on the field come September and October.

Soon after the final match, New Zealand will be heading towards the general election. This year’s election on 26 November will be about which party has a realistic plan to achieve faster growth for New Zealanders – growth that will deliver the jobs, higher incomes, and better living standards New Zealanders aspire to and deserve.

Since coming into office, National has made great progress towards building a brighter future for New Zealanders, and we are full of enthusiasm for the work ahead.

We’re building the foundations for a stronger economy, based on exports and saving, because that’s the only way we will create jobs, boost incomes, and help Kiwi families get ahead.

Our plan for economic growth is about building a competitive tax system, improving infrastructure, getting better results from education, increasing trade, cutting red tape, and building a much more productive public sector. It’s also about mapping a credible path back to surplus and repaying government debt.

National is also focused on building better public services that you and your family rely on – and we’re seeing great results.

In justice, we’ve passed 18 new laws to keep you and your family safe, and we’re spending $1.4 billion on public safety initiatives over the next six years.

In health, we’re seeing district health boards performing at much higher standards nationwide. There are 400 extra elective procedures being performed every week. We’ve increased the health workforce by 500 more doctors and 1000 more nurses, and we’ve got 1800 people signed up to our voluntary bonding scheme that puts graduate doctors, nurses, and midwives in hard-to-staff areas and specialties.

We’re spending more on education than ever before, to make sure young people have the skills they need to succeed. Our progress so far includes introducing National Standards in primary and intermediate schools, boosting trades training opportunities, increasing places in tertiary education, and better targeting of early childhood education.

Our commitment to rebuilding Canterbury also stands firm. Budget 2011 sets aside $5.5 billion over six years to do just that.

I strongly value the contribution our South African communities make to New Zealand, and I look forward to updating you on the Government’s progress again soon.”

RUGBY WORLD CUP REPORT

The Big Number Three hits NZThe Rugby World Cup is the third biggest sporting event in the world after the Olympic Games and the Soccer World Cup.

The tourism industry here is bracing itself for the onslaught of an estimated 85,000 visitors from all over the world. Original

estimates of 100 000 for the RWC have been dampened by the Christchurch earthquakes, but the sudden arrival of so many tourists and their movements around the country will certainly put a degree of strain on hospitality and tourism groups here that have not seen such numbers before in living history.

So? Who will do it?No guesses, but we are all looking to the hosting country to hold the cup

high and make all of New Zealand proud. Okay, we might all be ex-pats, but we do not live in South Africa any more. The Springboks and the Wallabies have both had the cup twice already, so now, maybe, it is the All Blacks’ turn. New Zealand is the smallest rugby nation in the world, yet it has proved time and time again to produce some of the best players in the world.

The Northern TeamsThe Northern Hemisphere teams seem to have lost their fire, so this RWC

could belong to the Southern teams, including surprise winnows Argentina whose test performances of late have been more than satisfactory. England is due to host the 2015 RWC and, as previous cup-holders in 2003, may want to prefer to take the glory on home soil. It would certainly suit them better,

because they suffered a severe test loss recently against the ‘Bokke that revealed a side that is working towards maturity in a few years’ time.

France could still be the All Blacks’ nemesis after the 2007 RWC debacle, because they have both been selected for Pool A.

The Six Nations competition held in March this year showed the more vulnerable sides

of the Irish, Welsh and Scottish teams that will require a lot of improvement if they have any hope of making progress in their pools towards the semis in the RWC.

Italy is still being coached by South African Nick Mallet who will be replaced by Jacques Brunel after the RWC, against the wishes of the team. They did well in the Six Nations against France, but got totally drubbed by England later in the competition.

The Southern TeamsWell the Super 15 results certainly came as a complete surprise because the

last time that an Australian team won this comp was way back in 2005 when the Brumbies took the crown. The Queensland Reds have followed the bottom of the table for that whole period until they suddenly re-invented themselves this year and rose to the top in a nail-biting final against NZ champions, the Canterbury Crusaders. With the home-crowd advantage lost, the Crusaders soldiered on into a game that was featureless with only a few kicks at goal, but no tries until a last minute feat of spectacular running rugby by the Reds put the game out of reach from the Crusaders and gave the home team the only try of the match.

By far the most important Rugby stadium in South Africa, this once- iconic home of the SA Rugby Union has a special

place in the hearts of all South Africans, both past and present.This majestic amphitheatre of concrete, steel and glass stands proudly

below Devil’s Peak in Cape Town’s southern suburbs like some ancient Greek temple; holding within her ramparts stories and secrets that have become legendary in the history books of South African rugby.

For decades it has held in its cloisters the offices of the South African Rugby Union which took up office under the Grand Stand in 1971. The original South African Rugby Board, as it was known then, was first established in Kimberley in 1889, during the days of the “diamond rush.” It moved to Cape Town in 1893 when Billy Simkins became president, renting modest premises in the city until the offices finally moved to Newlands in 1971. Decades later in 1990, the SARB purchased the magnificent Mill House which was built in the 1840’s by Jacob Letterstedt, and this stately old building became the new home of the SARB.

In 1990 the grand old stadium celebrated its 100th year and at that stage it had witnessed the most Springbok rugby matches out of all of the then existing rugby stadiums in South Africa. Her current capacity is 45 000 and she has now been eclipsed by the brand new soccer stadium that was built

The magic of Newlands in 2009 in Greenpoint, which has a seating capacity of 68 000. Greenpoint has world class features and a stunning design. When lit up at night it can be seen from outer space. It will probably compete with Newlands for bigger rugby matches in the future.

The first official suites were installed at Newlands on the North Stand in 1983 at a cost of R3.5m, a princely sum in those days. The next year, electronic scoreboards were installed and then in 1985 the South Stand was re-built at a cost of R10.2million.

Most of the international matches at Newlands that took place before the turn of the 19th Century were between South Africa and the British

Isles. One of the most important post-war matches took place on the 16th July 1949 between the two arch rivals, South Africa and New Zealand. It was truly an exciting match despite the fact that no tries were scored and South Africa came away with a 15 -11 win over New Zealand.

Since then Newlands has hosted a number of notable test matches including SA and France, Ireland, The British Lions; and, of course, some of the key games in the 1995 Rugby World Cup, where South Africa was the host country.

If its walls could speak they would tell tales of classic battles fought on the field and roars from the crowd as they celebrate their favourite sport, regardless of the weather; and, as most Capetonians will tell you, many a match has been played in cold, rainy conditions.

As one person wrote about Newlands:-“Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale her infinite variety.” Newlands, we salute you. You will remain in our hearts as a fond memory

forever.

North Shore City Council Parks Manager Martin van Jaarsveld says, “The completion of extensive work to

improve drainage, irrigation and turf surface late in 2009 made Onewa Domain a popular choice as a training venue for RWC 2011. Springbok coaching and management staff were most impressed when they visited in May last year.

The site is well located with easy access to the motorway and a five to 10 minute drive to the Auckland CBD. The training field is also surrounded by bush on two sides, which gives it an attractive green backdrop and also makes it ideal for ‘closed’ practice sessions. During RWC 2011 there will be seven training venues across Auckland that will host teams during the tournament. Onewa Domain has been chosen by South Africa and France. Silverdale Rugby Club will host Japan, Namibia and Samoa.

Of the estimated 85 000 visitors to our country from all parts of the world, 5 000 will be from South Africa,

based on previous RWC statistics which have been researched by Auckland City Council. Even more importantly, 44 000 of the estimated visitors will be here in NZ for the first time ever. This will be a golden opportunity for all businesses to showcase their goods and services by hosting a touring group. The emphasis will be on entertainment and having fun, but at the same time there will be opportunities for you to conduct presentations to promote your business even if it is not linked with hospitality or tourism.

Overseas visitors who are also business people will be keen to participate in these tours because it will be a way of deducting all or part of the touring costs from tax. So there will be a large segment of the touring parties who will gladly take part in your hosting parties in order to investigate business opportunities here in NZ.

The Auckland Business Club, ably administered by Suzanne McKinnon, have put in place a number of initiatives to help local businessmen identify the opportunities and get marketing programmes in place. Some of these initiatives are:-

A certain John Taylor of Thames NZ, was part of the winning New Zealand team that claimed the highly

coveted “Zeerust Cup.” His is one of the many stories which are being celebrated in the Coromandel’s new “Walter Callaway Trail” which is to be launched, with much fanfare, on Saturday 24th September 2011.

The Trail focuses on the story of New Zealand’s participation in the South African War seen through the perspective of the Maori-born Walter Callaway, as well as other local characters who also played a very significant role during that conflict.

Walter Callaway’s story is unique and it has already been told through the recent publishing of his biography, Walter Cal laway – Maori Warrior of the Boer War. The Trail is a sequel to that, and by visiting the high quality exhibits and related places of interest, a visitor can get a first-hand account of what happened, in what has already been termed as “New Zealand’s Forgotten War.”

The Callaway Exhibition will be housed in Coromandel Town’s Old Courthouse, next to the I-Site, during the Rugby World Cup and then after the tournament it will be shifted to the Brian Boru in Thames. It will be launched with much fanfare at 11 am on the 24th September and even the SA High Commissioner will be there. Coromandel Town has organised a range of activities for that day and it will culminate in the town watching the big grudge match of France versus New Zealand. Everyone is welcome to participate in the day’s celebration.

The Trail will also include stories such as Bradford from Paeroa – who was New Zealand’s first overseas casualty and the first colonial soldier to die in action in the war. Lena Kenrick of Thames who worked in the Concentration camps also has a fascinating story to tell. There are many other such narratives – even the unique set of Boer Mauser rifles on display in the Brian Boru make interesting viewing.

In addition, The Treasury in Thames is housing a comprehensive reference library to store biographical details of New Zealanders who volunteered to serve queen and country in that war. To aid such research, a set of beautifully made information panels depicting each of the ten NZ Contingents’ story, will also be on display.

This project, funded by donors including Te Papa National Museum, local government structures and local businesses, promises to become a unique tourist attraction for the Coromandel region, even well beyond the World Cup. It is hoped that the Walter Callaway Project will help raise the awareness of the substantial contact that New Zealand and South Africa have had in the past - and as a result, further strengthen the bond between our two countries.

BARRY: Thank you very much! I’m honored that people are excited to come and see me. Yes, it is my first visit to New Zealand – what happened to the old one? Did Zealand used to be Holland? If so, then you guys have got the Dutchmen. Seriously, I am ever so excited and thankful that I can still make people laugh… and have fun doing it.SAMAG: Excellent. Please don’t make it your last visit!

BARRY: I’ve got this promoter who up till now seems to be doing a good job and is already talking about return trips. I’d love to work in New Zealand again; in fact I want to continue to apply my trade all around the world.SAMAG: Are you staying for the Rugby World Cup?

BARRY: No I’m not. I’m going straight back to work in South Africa; in fact, I’ve got a gig the day I land back in Johannesburg, and for the three days after that! I live in PE and can’t even go straight home to my own bed. .SAMAG: This issue we are running a RWC Special, so when you come and visit in August make sure you give the All Blacks a hard time!

BARRY: Maybe I can, but our current rugby team doesn’t seem to know their ass from their elbow. SAMAG: Please tell us about your most embarrassing moment on stage.

BARRY: I went to the wrong gig and started working on stage. It soon became clear the audience wasn’t expecting a comedian because when I got out my guitar to play a song, some guys got up and danced. I was asked to leave. I got to the actual gig late. SAMAG: Do you often have to change your material to suit the audience?

BARRY: I change my material all the time. I do 10 seconds a day, which equals over an hour a year. No two shows are ever the same. I do however get many requests for audience favourites. SAMAG: What do you do with the hecklers?

BARRY: This is South Africa pal, I shoot them.SAMAG: Have you visited ex-pat SA communities in other parts of the world?

A new era for sanzThe South Africa/New Zealand Charitable Trust (commonly known as ‘SANZ’) has recently

re-invented itself with a highly successful major social function that was held at the Browns Bay Bowling Club, Auckland.

It was touted as a “mid-year Christmas” and it certainly fitted the bill; with a genuine Father Christmas, Christmas trees, piles of gifts and

freezing northern hemisphere cold weather to boot!The function, held on 1st July, attracted over 120 people and included

traditional braai-packs for the SA aficionados, a full-on discotheque and cash bar; and especially for the kids, jumping castles, balloons and face painting. There were some corporate sponsors who gave away generous prizes and a highly effective welcoming team who handed out lucky numbers for a draw later in the evening that created much excitement amongst the welling crowd of ex-pat devotees.

Chris and Natalie Sparg of Sparg’s Auto Tune have taken over the reins of the Social Committee, and their first function has certainly secured them without contention as the dead-ringers for the job!

Full marks to both of them for their efforts on the 1st July. The event went off without a hitch, leaving a lot of newcomers totally blown away by their effort at offering good old-fashioned SA hospitality that has become our trademark since moving away from the old country.

We look forward to bigger and better social events from the Spargs in the future.

SANZ are acutely aware that they need a bold presence on the internet, so Committee Leader George Deeb, of George Deeb Associate Solicitors has brought together the talents of a number of highly skilled SA expat IT experts, including Cathy Mellett of Net Branding Ltd to produce a brand new SANZ website that will attract visitors from all corners of the globe. Once the website is upgraded and polished to its maximum potential, it will offer advertising facilities to all NZ residents, both SA and Kiwi. After all, the SA market is now big enough to be offered at a price to anyone who wants to do business with us.

This concept has led SANZ to consider a new Biznet Sub-Committee, headed up by Richard Pearce of Barfoot and Thompson Residential. His function will be to bring together all persons interested in getting involved in the vibrant SA Community Business Network. He will spearhead a number of key functions and events that will follow on from the regular 6pm meetings that take place every first and third Wednesday evening at the Browns Bay Bowling Club. New immigrant business people who are looking to meet up with other ex-pats like themselves are welcome to join this fast-growing group. He will be ably assisted by Ian Mellett who runs the Central Auckland SA Biznet Group.

Sport has always been a great way to bring people together and the committee has appointed Michelle de Wet as sub-committee co-ordinator in order to promote a variety of exciting sporting events that will attract interest from the broader ex-pat SA community. With the Rugby World Cup fast approaching there are plans afoot to combine matches held at both Eden Park and North Harbour Stadium with SA functions.

The Committee has proposed a number of other portfolios the functions of which will be to form a vital link between all of those who are keen to meld with South Africans who have happily settled here, both new and old. They are the portfolios of immigration, recruitment, tourism and education, amongst others.

some good advice. The venue is the Kawai Parapura Retreat Centre, 14 Mills Lane,

Albany off Oteha Valley Road. This event is generously hosted by Peter Meyer who

provides free wine and snacks.

MAIRANGI BAY SANZ COFFEE CLUB

Calling all SA housewives or retirees who are looking to socialize with others and

share their stories! This club meets once per month on the 2nd Thursday of each

month. The Venue: Café Windsor, 542 East Coast Road, Mairangi Bay, in front of the

Baptist Church opposite the entrance to Hastings Road. Travel down a little road next

to Kentucky Fried Chicken where you will find plenty of safe parking. Time: 10 am to

MARISNA ROODT

No more horsing aroundThis is our third article on equestrian prodigy Marisna Roodt who has made significant progress in her hobby. She is daughter of well known Auckland insurance broker Herman Roodt and his wife Renet.

The last time we did an article on Marisna, she was preparing for the Inter Pacific Team selection. She has since been successful in being chosen to be part of the New Zealand team.

The Inter Pacific Team Exchange is a Pony Club exchange between five countries; Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, New Zealand and the U.S.A, with five members in each team. It is held every two years and each country takes turns in hosting the exchange. The exchange consists of the teams travelling together exploring the country they are in; a friendly gymkhana where teams are mixed around to get to know each other; cultural activities, educational escapades and the main event of the exchange, the Nation’s Cup Show Jumping competition.

This year it was hosted by New Zealand from May 1 to 15. The teams assembled in Wellington and eventually ended up in KihiKihi where the Nation’s Cup was held, a two round show jumping competition. Canada won the Nation’s Cup, New Zealand was second, Australia third, U.S.A. fourth and Hong Kong fifth. The riders only had a 1/2 hour to trial and decide which horse to ride out of a pool of horses on loan. Marisna had a challenging horse, but managed to figure out his tricks and finished as the second best performing Kiwi rider. Well done, Marisna!

To be considered for the New Zealand team, Marisna had several requirements which had to be met. She had to be between the ages of 17-21; hold a ‘B’ Equestrian Certificate or higher and be an active member of a Pony Club. Marisna holds her A Certificate, which is the highest qualification of the New Zealand Pony Club Association. She had to ride three unfamiliar horses and do a show jumping round on each of them, after only having 5 minutes to get used to each other, and under the scrutinizing eyes of the riding panel of three.

Marisna says it has always been a dream to represent her country and could not believe she had been chosen for the national team. This taste of international competition has now spurred on her determination to compete for New Zealand at a higher level and she looks forward to climbing through the grades and competing on the world equestrian stage in the future. Whilst steadily working towards her next endeavours, she will remain ever busy with her studies at Massey University and by coaching at the local Rosedale and Silverdale Pony Clubs.

Marisna’s story is an inspiration to all young ex-pat New Zealanders. If you know of a young person who has excelled either academically or in their extra-curricular pursuits, please let the Editors know.

1) Sort out your finances at the startSpeak to your bank or mortgage broker to find out how much you can

borrow, and what you can afford to spend on a new home. If possible, get a pre-approval in writing, and understand what conditions you have to meet before you can buy. Allow for conveyancing, valuation and loan application costs, and include rates, insurance and repairs in your budget.

2) Decide on the maximum that you are prepared to spendInterest rates are likely to increase over the next few years, so you need

to assess your long term affordability, taking interest rate increases and your future plans into account. Set yourself a maximum purchase price below your approved limit.

3) Make a list of key requirements and describe the home you want

It helps to have a clear idea of what you are looking for, so make a list of what is essential for you, and what would be a bonus.

4) Select your preferred suburbs and focus on theseThe key to successfully buying real estate is to gather as much information

as possible about homes on the market in your preferred area and in your price range. That way you’ll have a good feel for the relative values of properties and will be able to buy the right home at the right price.

5) Choose your sales personA real estate sales person can guide you through the home buying

process, and will work with you to find the home that you are looking for. Best of all, you do not have to pay for their advice and knowledge. Choose a sales person who can understand your requirements and ask him or her to show you a wide selection of homes in your price range.

6) Choose your solicitorYour solicitor is a key member of your team, and it is wise to choose your

solicitor get their advice before you sign a purchase contract.

7) Understand the purchase processAsk your estate agent and/or solicitor to fully explain the purchase options

and purchase processes. Read the booklet NZ Residential Property Sale and Purchase Agreements Guide from the Real Estate Agents Authority (www.reaa.govt.nz). You can also read books from the library or do research online.

8) Buying at AuctionMany homes are sold at auctions, so attend a few auctions to see how

they work. Try to predict the selling prices in advance, as this will give you a good idea of how well you know the market in your area.

Remember, before you can bid at an auction, you need to have the required deposit, usually 10%; you need to be able to buy unconditionally; and you need to be able to settle on the settlement date. (See more details at www.barfoot.co.nz)

9) LIM, Builders Report etcIf you are buying at auction or making an unconditional offer, you have to

do your homework before you buy. This usually includes asking your solicitor to review the title, LIM (Land Information Memorandum) and purchase contract. You should also get a builders report on the property, and discuss this with your advisors before you buy.

In conditional offers, you can purchase subject to LIM and builders report.

10) When you find the “right” house, submit an offer
