All of the economists say that the recession is nearly over and are

predicting a slow but sure recovery. The USA, France and Germany are all bullish that the recession is

over but we will still have a hangover for some time yet. Share markets are looking better and governments are positive about the future. What does that mean to us, are we going to be better off in 2010 or not? Unemployment is at its highest since 2000. Fewer people are leaving for Australia and Kiwis abroad are coming home showing a positive net migration figure for the last quarter. The residential property market is doing well and there are now multiple offers being made on properties. At the auctions land prices are increasing and good residential stock is hard to get.

South Africans are still coming to New Zealand in their droves but many of them without the right skill set and are having difficulty getting work. Some unfortunately are going back home. My advice is to employ a good licensed adviser. In this magazine we have a variety of stories and articles from our advertisers and by the response far and wide the magazine is now part of many people’s lives and is eagerly snapped up at the South African outlets.

The social functions are being well supported at the Browns Bay Bowling Club, please see list of dates in the magazine. We have sponsors for the next two evenings but we need some one to host the Xmas function. Please let me know if you are interested. The prime minister has been giving talks around the country and is very positive regarding New Zealand’s progress and resilience to the recession. His office has once again supported our magazine by supplying an article on the direction in which our country is heading. The 2011 Rugby world cup is getting closer and closer. South AfricanPresident Thabo Mbeki, who has led South Africa since

1999, agreed on Saturday 20th September 2008 to go quietly after the ruling ANC asked him to resign. Mr. Mbeki leaves behind a largely incompetent government fraught with nepotism and corruption, and a despondent country with weakened institutions, declining education and health standards, out-of-control violent crime and an HIV/AIDS pandemic. Troublingly, Jacob Zuma, the man who is likely to replace Mr. Mbeki, inspires even less confidence for the future of South Africa.

To understand the disappointment of the last decade in South Africa, it is important to contrast Mr. Mbeki with his predecessor. When Nelson Mandela emerged from his 27-year incarceration, he preached forgiveness and compassion and set about to forge a nation in which the whites – his former jailers – had an important role to play. Mr. Mbeki, on the other hand, remained a Marxist ideologue who never overcame the pain and prejudices of his life in exile.

In Mr. Mbeki’s view the West oppressed the rest of mankind. Obsessed with race and colonialism, Mr. Mbeki undermined the response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic in South Africa. To him, orthodox science “portrayed black people…. (as) victims of a slave mentality.” Rejection of the HIV/AIDS orthodoxy was necessary to confront “centuries-old white racist beliefs and concepts about Africans.” Hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, of South Africans died needlessly while Mr. Mbeki defended scientists who claimed AIDS was not caused by HIV.

Similarly, it was Mr. Mbeki’s warped ideology that led him to support Zimbabwe’s dictator.

Robert Mugabe couched his devastating economic policies in revolutionary terms -- as a just fight against alleged British plots and other delusions. For eight years Mbeki begged for more time for his “quiet diplomacy” to work while Zimbabwe burned. If the recent power-sharing deal between Mr. Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai works, it will not do so because of Mr. Mbeki’s diplomacy, but because of his departure. Mr. Mugabe may yet find it more advantageous to compromise with Mr. Tsvangirai than to deal with Jacob Zuma who has criticized Mugabe in the past.

Mr. Mbeki’s foreign policies have seen him cozy up to Cuba, Iran and Libya. South Africa’s intelligence minister visited Iran last year where he praised Hezbollah and Hamas. In sum, Mr. Mbeki never encountered an anti-Western tyrant he did not like.

At home, he exhibited the authoritarian tendencies he had learned during his stint in the Soviet Union. He transformed the state-owned South African Broadcasting Corporation into a personal propaganda machine that banned some of his critics from appearing on it. He banished some of his competitors in the ANC by accusing them of trying to assassinate him.

Mr. Mbeki was rightly praised for following good macro-economic policies that saw the budget deficit and public debt fall, and growth increase. But being tight with the public purse did not make Mr. Mbeki “business-friendly” ….SA business entities are heavily taxed (35%) and highly regulated. They also have to follow onerous race guidelines in employment and promotion that are highly prejudiced against white employees. Micro-economic over-regulation has kept growth low (expected to come in at 2% this year) and

contributed to a 26% unemployment rate. The number of people living in absolute poverty has doubled since the ANC came to power in 1994.

Mr. Mbeki’s breathless drive to monopolize power has led him to attack the independence of the judiciary. According to a High Court judge, he tried to influence the judicial proceedings against his nemesis, former Deputy President Jacob Zuma. It was that apparent abuse of state power that finally gave the ANC leadership an excuse to ask Mr. Mbeki to resign.

What South Africa is crying out for at this stage is a man or woman who has a “Mandela spirit” i.e. one that can put the past behind them and move ahead in co-operation with all of the diverse races and creeds that make up the country.

Somehow the thought of Jacob Zuma brandishing a machine gun in his hand does not inspire the vision that we are looking for!

works of South African artists whose paintings

will also feature as our front covers. This issue we present world renowned painter Roelof Rossouw and his work “Road to Clarens” appears on our front cover.

Roelof was born in 1957, and grew up in Benoni, near Johannesburg. He is a painter of figures, city and landscapes, street scenes, boats and

harbours, architecture, parks and gardens. His favourite medium is oils, but he also enjoys working in collage, acrylic and mixed media.

Roelof studied at the Johannesburg School of Art and was employed by Medunsa (Medical University of SA) as a graphic artist and medical illustrator.

In 1990, Roelof left Medunsa and was doing freelance work whilst transitioning to be able to start painting fulltime and in 2001 he moved to Robertson in the Western Cape.

He has presented 33 solo exhibitions at top galleries in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Stellenbosch, UK and Canada. He has also had other exhibitions in Glasgow, London, Jersey, Galway, Northern Ireland, San Francisco and Miami.

Roelofs work can be found in the homes of Clint Eastwood, and many other private collectors in South Africa and throughout the world’’

Roelof finds inspiration for his work in everyday situations. The subject matter doesn’t have to be grand or idyllic; quite the opposite - he observes the abstract shapes and exciting contrasts created by the sunlit and shadow areas of buildings, an old factory, a boat yard, a crowded street, farm-lands, etc. These are the kind of visual statements that inspire him to capture them on canvas.

The central theme of his paintings has something to do with mood, light and colour. He creates a particular atmosphere and sense of time. By reducing unnecessary detail he will focus the attention on the shapes and juxtaposition of colour.

Roelof loves the Cape where he enjoys painting the vineyards, mountains, harbours, street scenes and Cape Dutch architecture.

When Roelof was seventeen his art teacher took the class on a European Art Tour and he fell in love with Europe and travel. Since 1995, he has visited a foreign country every year, mainly England and Europe. Some years the overseas trips become well planned painting vacations and he has painted in Italy, Kiev (Ukraine), France and USA

Now that the worst of the recession appears to be over, this Government’s challenge is to help communities

Young New Zealanders were particularly hard hit by this recession so recently we announced our Youth Opportunities Package, which invests $152 million to help create work, education, and training opportunities for young people.

We’ve also announced our Break-Away Package for School Holidays. This is designed to increase opportunities for children to take part in meaningful activities in the school holidays – whether it’s drama, outdoor adventure, or organised sport.

We’ve broadened our Fresh Start for Young Offenders package of initiatives. These reforms target young people who have veered off the rails and found themselves in trouble with the police or the youth justice system.

And we’ve introduced our Kiwisport initiative, aimed at encouraging more school children to get involved in organised sport.

We’re also committed to making sure that every child in New Zealand has a chance to climb the ladder of opportunity. It’s important every child learns to read, write and do maths. Getting the basics right will help them make valuable contributions to their communities and their country.

Our National Standards scheme will see all children from age five assessed against the National Standard no matter what school they are at.

These results will be reported to parents in plain English. This is an important step for ensuring parents know how their child is really doing at school. If you don’t know your child is slipping behind, you can’t do anything about it. But if you do know, you can work with the school to help your child achieve.

Tackling climate change is also vital as we build a more prosperous New Zealand.

There’s been a lot of debate lately about what action we should be taking. Later this year, we will be negotiating climate change targets with many countries at Copenhagen.

National is committed to combating climate change and reducing New Zealand’s greenhouse gas emissions. We are about a balanced, practical approach that has New Zealand doing its fair share towards this global problem. We need to balance our environmental responsibilities with our economic opportunities.

Our target for 2020 is to reduce emissions by 10 to 20 per cent on 1990 levels. This is internationally credible, and both environmentally and economically responsible.

It’s great news for our families and businesses that it looks like the economy is starting to recover.

We all know there will be more challenges ahead, but National will continue its comprehensive plan to lift New Zealand’s economic performance. We are determined to help businesses recover, create more

Farming principles are universal, however to the immigrant the new Kiwi jargon and buzz is confusing and disorientating. Most employers assume that everyone understands. Unfortunately, if you mess up as a result of a communication break down, you are often perceived as stupid at best, or deliberately obstructionist at worst. Sure there are some major system differences but most are probably more cultural and linguistic than technical. Being forewarned would mitigate against these problems.

I vowed that, if I was at my age ever able to get my head around it at all, I would devote some of my time trying to help prepare other immigrants by offering some orientation. I have seen a number of Southern Africans working on farms and really struggling with the “work ethic” and language, invariably leading to abject frustration.

In my experience if you ask a question, it is either not understood or perceived as a stupid question. Imagine your response if someone who claimed to be an experienced farmer asked you what a “Tractor” was! Of

course most people would know what a tractor was but most immigrants would not know what a “rising 3 springer” was!

I could not understand why farmers looked sideways at me when I asked them if they had applied any fertiliser in mid winter, only to be told that they only did that in the autumn and where did I come from ? They did however admit to applying Nitrogen! Everywhere else in the world, Nitrogen in a form that can be applied to make plants grow, would be classed as a fertilizer, but not here!

Now 4 ½ years down the track, I have set up Harvest Farm Advisory and farmers are paying me for my advice and valuing my “outside the square” approach. In addition we intend to offer an orientation course, the objective of which is to facilitate rapid and effective assimilation of all incumbents into the agricultural workforce.

Since her arrival in New Zealand from South Africa in 2000, Irene has become a rising star in international netball. She currently plays for the Waikato/ Bay of Plenty team,

the Magic and during the ANZ netball championships played here recently she proved to the world that she certainly does have the ”magic” that it takes to be a top rate shooter.

She has now recorded her second straight perfect game in this trans-Tasman series by shooting 45 balls from 45 attempts, helping her team to a 63-45 win over NSW Swifts.

about 45 minutes every day practicing her shooting. She improvises match conditions by getting a colleague to harass her while she is trying to shoot. And, best of all, she practices shooting with her eyes closed!

This technique could come in handy if she is injured during a match and her vision is impaired.

During the off season she punishes herself with an arduous physical

training schedule that keeps her muscles well toned and her body hyper fit. Most sportswomen look towards retiring as they get into their late thirties, but not this tough lady! She is only two months into her thirty-eighth year and still going strong!

Magic coach Noelene Taurua, who herself is only a few years older than Irene, believes that there is no reason for her top shooter to take retirement yet. She is at the peak of her career and should still be able to compete in a few more seasons.

The South African Magazine carried a story on Irene in Issue No 3 last year (July 2008) but after her recent record-breaking performance in the ANZ Championships we couldn’t resist putting this enigmatic South African born lady right back in the limelight where she belongs!

Simon Oscroft and Matthew Warman arrived on New Zealand shores with their parents when they were young kids in the mid-nineties. Their parents had decided that there was a better future for them here in NZ. And how right they were!

Going to school at Rangitoto High enabled them to meet three other young Kiwi boys who changed their lives for good.

This union has created a rock band called “Midnight Youth” made up as follows:-

functions to attracting the interests of local record producers. Their performance at the New Zealand’s high school “Rockquest” competition catapulted them into instant fame during 2006. Then came their big break – internationally acclaimed veteran Australian group INXS chose them as curtain raisers for two of their New Zealand shows during that year.

They received rave reviews from these performances and went onto release their first hit single, “Supernatural” which attained immediate airplay on rock music radio stations across NZ.

INXS declared that they were the best band that they have ever played with in Australasia.

In 2008 the band played the opening slots for OK Go and Incubus in their Auckland shows and travelled to New York to record their debut album “The Brave Don’t Run.”

This was a landmark for the group because the studios here also heard the likes of David Bowie, Bryan Adams and Sufjan Stevens put their music tracks to bed. Good for them.

They were later signed to Warner Music NZ in September 2008 and they released another single “The Letter” which became the band’s first top 40 hit in NZ in January 2009. It was the number one NZ song on NZ Radio for 11 weeks and peaked at #20 on the NZ singles chart.

The group’s first album “The Brave Don’t Run” went gold in NZ after 8 weeks on the charts, selling over 7 500 copies.

In June this year the band toured NZ on a major headlining tour in support of their new album. They finished off by featuring at Ohakunes Mountain Mardi Gras Event playing to over 6 000 people. They are currently doing the big cities of Australia and soon, no doubt, they will be heading for the big lights of the US and the UK.

Kevin and Belinda moved from beautiful Cape Town to the North Shore in the first quarter of 2009. They both attended schools in Johannesburg and lived in Cape Town for the last 17 years. They decided that Auckland would be the best place to rear their loving sons Simon and Jordan for obvious reasons.

The Van den Berg family have now settled in their new home in the East Coast bays and their boys attend school in Campbell’s Bay. Both sons are settling in well in their new school and enjoy the general freedom of growing up on the Shore.

The long awaited new business migrant policy

has finally been released by immigration New Zealand. Below is an art ic le that may shed some l ight on the changes that have been made.

Should you wish to apply under one of the new revised investor categories or know of someone who would, you are welcome to contact our offices, and arrange a meeting with one of our registered immigration advisors to discuss your options in finer detail.

Business Migrant UpdateThe investor category as we know it has come to an end; however two new

categories have been introduced. The new categories are called Investor and Investor Plus. There are significant changes from the old regime although the health and character requirements have been retained.

In the First category (Investor), the minimum investment that needs to be maintained over a four year period is NZ$1.5 million dollars. The applicant needs to achieve an IELTS score in English proficiency of at least 3. Thus, only very limited command of the English language is required. There is however also an age restriction. The applicant needs to be less than 65 years of age. Also 40% of the last three years of the investment period must be spent in New Zealand. This category has a quota of 300 slots per annum. This means that should more than 300 applications be received, Immigration New Zealand will most likely select the applicants with the highest score.

The Second category (Investor Plus) has a minimum investment threshold of $10 million. The NZ$10 million must be invested in New Zealand over a period of three years. What is really remarkable about this category is that there is no requirement of any English ability (it seems that there is a presumption that such a person will be in a financial position to hire their own interpreters). Furthermore the applicant is not subject to age restrictions

or any business experience. All that is required is for the applicant to spend at least 20% of the last two years of the investment period in New Zealand to be granted residence.

Aside from the changes above, the investor category has also seen some improvements. Applicant’s bringing in an extra $500 000 with the promise of hiring at least 3 Kiwi’s should result in a conditional residence permit being issued as soon as the application has been granted.

The idea behind these amendments are to simplify the process and relax the English language requirements, in order

to attract more affluent immigrants from countries where English is not their first language.

Hobby City began as a little addition to a motorbike shop in the early 80s. It had various homes but finally moved

to Quay Street ten years ago. Over the years it has grown to be New Zealand’s largest hobby store. Daroish and Judy met at Rhodes University and immigrated to New Zealand in 1997. “After six years in Auckland we found ourselves frustrated in our jobs and on a treadmill. So we resigned our jobs and took the kids on a SA adventure. We put them into Southern Cross School for two terms, a private school on a wildlife reserve in Hoedspruit, and we had a six-month holiday touring the country including camping in the Kruger Park for 72 nights. During this time we decided to become self-employed and buy our own business.”

Daroish has been a passionate hobbyist since he was a child. “When I was eight years old I saw the plans for a pylon racer in a model magazine. I just knew that I had to build it.” Having built dozens of planes that have grown in size and complexity Daroish also built a full size aerobatic two-seater bi-plane that he flies out of Ardmore Airport. Precision flying is Daroish’s sport

and he competed in his 5th World Precision Flying Championship in Poland in July. His best result was 2nd in 1999. Some of Daroish’s models, including his turbine jet, are hanging up in the Hobby City stores.

Shopping Centre. We are open extended hours from 8am to 8pm weekdays and 9am to 6pm on weekends. The practice is open 364 days of the year. Our practice serves as a General Practice as well as an A&M Clinic. We have ACC and Cornerstone (General Practice) accreditation.

We have a pharmacy adjacent to the practice as well as Mercy Radiology who perform x-rays, ultrasound and mammography. There is also a laboratory on the premises. Numerous specialists visit on a weekly basis including orthopaedic surgeons, trauma specialist, ophthalmologist, skin cancer specialist, general surgeon, gastroenterologist, podiatrists, audiologist and The Skin Institute have rooms on site. They specialise in Appearance Medicine (botulinum toxin, fillers, IPL, peels and microdermabrasion) and dermatology. One of our doctors, Dr Ellen Selkon, performs sessions there. A gynaecologist will be joining the team in the near future.

The practice was established by Drs’ Richard and Ellen Selkon in May 1999 and has continued to grow. We now have 8 doctors working in the practice, four of which are South African graduates. 1 Iraqi, 1 British and 2 New Zealand trained Doctors make up the team. Our South African graduates are Richard Selkon who qualified at UCT, Ellen Selkon at Stellenbosch, Dottie Prinsloo at Pretoria and Jim McVeagh at Wits.

Our nursing staff are all highly trained and run specialist clinics in Diabetes, Asthma, Before School Checks, and Women’s Health. They are available to registered patients for advice at certain times.

The practice is extremely well equipped with the latest technology and equipment. We are able to manage most trauma in house and those that need referral to hospital, we are able to stabilise them and refer on in an efficient manner. We have full resuscitation facilities and all our clinical staff are trained to a high level in cardiac resuscitation. We have a separate plaster bay and can deal with most fractures as well as suturing and removal of foreign objects.

We also have a separate accredited theatre for removal of lesions where we can perform surgery in a sterile environment with up to date technology.

This includes a “surgitron” machine, which is able to remove benign moles, and skin tags with minimal to no scarring.

We are part of the Health West PHO (Primary Health Organisation) and participate in numerous PHO funded schemes e.g. Get Checked – annual Diabetes review, Sexual Health consults for under 22 year olds, Primary Options – being able to manage patients in the treatment bays over extended periods and give iv treatment, arrange x-rays or other urgent investigations as required.

SOCIAL EVENTS: We have a monthly fun social get together at the Browns Bay Bowling Club, Beach Road, Browns Bay on the first Friday evening of each month starting at 6pm. We have a live band doing numbers from yesteryear; lots of traditional SA food (boerewors rolls, biltong etc); jumping castles and

If you speak to ex-South African immigrants here in New Zealand about this topic, one normally notices a “glazing over” of the eyes and the subject immediately starts salivating. Oops!

We have no option than to present here in full colour our version of….

South African Potjiekos!

THE SOUTH AFRICAN RECIPE REVUE

The “potjie” was an amazing Cape Dutch concoction that has developed over the years and it is prized as a unique South African form of food preparation that is well preserved in the ex-pat SA conclaves that we find all around the world, including NZ.Here is a typical potjie recipe that you may want to include in your next SA social event with your friends:-

• 750g bolo or boneless chuck of beef

• 1 pig’s trotter • 30ml cooking oil • 2 onions, sliced • 10ml salt • freshly ground black pepper to

taste

• 200g uncooked pearl wheat • 4 tomatoes, peeled and coarsely

chopped • 250ml dry white wine • 250ml meat stock • 2 leeks, sliced • 5 baby marrows, sliced

Method

• Cut the bolo or chuck into cubes and saw the trotter into portions.

• Heat the cooking oil in a Potjie and brown the meat.

• Add the onion and fry until it is translucent.

• Season with salt and pepper and add the pearl wheat and tomatoes.

• Heat the wine and meat stock

together in a small pan over the fire, then pour the liquid into the Potjie and cover with the lid.

• Let the meat simmer over low coals for 3-4 hours, until it is tender.

• Layer the leeks and baby marrows on top and simmer for another 20 minutes.

Serves 6-8

Potjiekos has been part of the South African culture for centuries. In fact, since the days of the fist settlement at

the Cape it began when food was cooked in a black cast-iron pot hanging from a chain over the kitchen fire. As the settlers decided to move north into new territories, the “Voortrekkers” took with them their “potjie” which was used to cook a stew made of venison and vegetables over an open camp fire which could have included poultry like guinea fowl, or more wilder game like wart hog, bush pig, rabbit or hare. As the Voortrekkers progressed across wild terrain in their “voorwagens,” they were confronted with a wide variety of rich game food that they successfully hunted and added to their “potjie” every night for dinner.

UK immigration - visitor visas for South African Passport Holders

New visa requirements for South Africans travelling to the UK

From 3 March 2009, South Africans travelling to the UK will be required to obtain a visa before travelling. South Africans who have previously travelled to the UK on their current passport, will

be exempt from this requirement. However, from mid 2009 they will also be required to obtain a visa before travelling to the UK.

This step comes after South Africa failed to pass the United Kingdom’s strict new Visa Waiver test.

The South African minister of Home Affairs, Mrs Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula was reported saying that the South African government respects the decision by British government, and will continue discussions with them about their concerns on South African passport and border controls.

Other countries that will also face strict new visa checks, after failing to pass the UK’s new Visa Waiver test are; Bolivia, Lesotho, Swaziland and Venezuela.

Additionally, anyone wishing to travel from these countries, including South Africa via the UK, will require a transit visa.

The good news for visitors from these countries are that there are ways to obtain multiple-entry visitor visas to the UK, and citizens from these countries should endeavour to obtain these to avoid the requirement needed to obtain a visa on each occasion of travel to the UK.
