Gospel Meditation First Sunday of Lent

Life can easily spin us out of control. While there are so many wonderful opportunities before us, we can easily get distracted and exhausted. There is always something to do, respond to, or check. The clutter of our lives can take us off course, and the best remedy for

getting back on track is the experience of the desert. Here, we can face our demons square on, resist them, and get back on course. We desperately need the season of Lent. This simple time of year forces us into greater awareness and grounds us in what is good and true.

What weighs you down and keeps you trapped? Maybe you are trying to do too much and please too many people. It could be that your fragile self-image is always pushing you to prove yourself and find success. Anxiety and worry, normally due to a lack of faith, can quickly tempt you with despair. It could be that you are listening to too many voices and allowing all of the negativity that is present erode the genuine goodness in your heart and in all of God’s creation. Or maybe you struggle too much with fear. Perhaps so much so that you are far too preoccupied with your own agenda and goals and left with little psychological or spiritual room to consider and respond to the plight of your neighbor. Do anger, bitterness, stubbornness, and hatred have homes in your heart? How about greed, gluttony, pride, apathy, or lust?

For many, their passions and what can be found on the Internet are their downfall, and they are robbed of their inner life and freedom. What is it, specifically, that tempts you away from a childlike trust in God? Define this, and use the next few weeks to allow God to chart you a course away from them. Silence, being alone, grace, honesty, struggle, tears, and dryness are all found in the desert. You will also find God and your true self in this holy place. Ready to go?

Broc Community Food Shelf The Broc boxes at the entrances to each church for the winter are oatmeal for Christ the King, and pasta sauce for St. Patrick. (IHM collects for the Community Cupboard the third weekend of the month.) Thank you in advance for your generosity!

Hunger in Our World When Jesus fed the 5,000, he said, "Give them some food yourselves." Reflect on the challenge of global hunger. How can you contribute to support the hungry in your community? Visit crsricebowl.org for more. Our parish community will participate in the national Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl collection this Lent. Pick yours up as you leave the church.

Peace,Fr.Bernie

In this sacred season of Lent, we are called to pray, fast, and give alms. There are no age limits to these three activities; each person needs to decide in conscience how to pray, fast, and give alms. Remember that the Fridays of Lent are meant to be days of abstinence of meat. Here are some parish opportunities for prayer and reflection:

Daily MassJoin us for daily Mass throughout Lent. The Mass schedule is found in this bulletin.

The Way of the Cross This is a very traditional and beautiful Lenten prayer, in which we walk with Jesus in the last moments of his life. There will be three opportunities each week for you to pray the Way of the Cross: Tuesday after the 6 PM Mass at St. Patrick’s; Friday at noon at Christ the King; Friday at 6:30 PM at Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Friday Lenten DinnersA simple, Lenten meatless dinner will be served at Immaculate Heart of Mary on Fridays from 5 PM to 6:30 PM. We will then pray the Way of the Cross upstairs in the church.

Pray the Passion of Jesus On Wednesday evenings (starting 3/4 and concluding 4/18), join us at Christ the King Church at 6:30 PM for a Holy Hour that will include Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, Vespers, Benediction, and a prayerful reading of the Passion from Matthew, which we will hear on Palm Sunday. Each week we will hear part of that Passion reading and Fr. Bernie will preach on it. There will be time for silent prayer. A great way to get ready to hear the Passion on Palm Sunday!

Light of the World RetreatThe Light of the World Retreat will take place March 27–30 and is a time for us to grow deeper in the Lord Jesus. It will be a time of prayer, community, and fellowship. It will encourage us to surrender our lives to Christ and the Holy Spirit.

Ageless in the Lord RetreatThis will be on Mondays, March 2 – April 6, 10 AM – Noon in Engle Hall at Christ the King. There is a cost of $10. See the notice elsewhere in the bulletin for more details.
