@ttention ^ll h^nds ...

Welcome to this issue of the Runabout.

As the sun sets on another year for the Region, we have a lot of things to look forward to in 2016, the 50th anniversary of Star Trek for one thing. This should be an excellent opportunity to promote chapters and more importantly celebrate Trek with our fans.

But 2016 won’t just be a celebration of the past, but it will be a celebration of the future. Star Trek Beyond will hit the cinemas, the third instalment of the cinematic rebirth of Star Trek. Despite the divisive nature of the film timeline, it always brings Star Trek to the forefront of the public’s thoughts.

Most excitingly, this time next year, the New Star Trek TV series will shortly be about to debut in the US. We don’t know much about it at this time, other than it will be available on CBS’s streaming service in the US. It will be the first official Star Trek series since Star Trek: Enterprise was cancelled in 2005. By the time I write the introduction to the winter 2016 Runabout, we should know a lot more about the impending series.

So, it's a very exciting time to be a Star Trek fan. Region 20 stands to benefit from this opportunity. 2015 will take some topping, but I know we can do it in 2016.

Best wishes for the Holiday season to everyone.

When Science Fiction Becomes Science F^ct (P^rt 2)

CDR Zig Potts, USS St^rg^zer

Continuing on from the last issue, let's now look at all those things created by Gene Roddenberry and the Star Trek team that hae made their way into the real world. Gene based much of his technology of real science. As a result of that he returned the favour of inspiration and many scientists and inventors have set about making his creations reality. But how many of them have made it into the real world?

Communic^tor (Cell Phone)

One of the most prominent technological gadgets that the show envisioned was the cell phone. It was in the form of a flip-open communicator—very much like a flip phone today.

Ironically enough, Kirk and crew were often cut off from the ship for one reason or another and had ..."no service"!

The Ph^ser

The Personnel Halting and Stimulation

Response (PHASR) gun is actually under development at the US Air

Force Research Laboratory. Like its science fiction counterpart, it can "stun"

assailants. Unlike Star Trek's phaser though, this PHASR is a non-lethal,

portable deterrent weapon which uses a laser system to blind the enemy temporarily. I don't doubt though, that it will be developed to be lethal... by someone at some stage ...

Computer Discs

Star Trek... That coloured cube or rectangular pieces of plastic that Spock would put

into his station console and get info from showed up not too long after, in the form of the computer disc, CD, and SD card to name a few. Above is one of McCoy’s medical devices.

They may have looked like cheap plastic preschool toys, but they kept the Enterprise universe chugging along.

Computer t^blet

My personal favourite here–the datapad. The men and women of The Next Generation always had any info they needed easily on hand and the devices looked sleek and sexy.

Today, we have all kinds of tablets PC’s, UMPCs, iPads, eBooks and other palm devices. Information on the go—a whole wireless computer in your hand.

The Holodeck

Ever since Princess Leia used a hologram of herself to ask Obi Wan Kenobi for help in the film Star Wars, scientists have been trying to harness the same technology for real.

In November 2008, a Star Wars style hologram communication took place between London and Berlin for German live communications conference.

A life-size hologram was transmitted from a studio in London to a live audience in Berlin. The hologram answered questions, laughed, looked into their eyes and was, to all appearances, real. It was, in fact, Ian O'Connell, one of the three directors of Musion, a small British telepresence company founded in 2002 that had developed the technology.

Wrist Phone

This one appeared in STAR TREK

THE MOTION PICTURE as well as other vintage sci-fi shows.

Wrist phones have been around for a while now but with

the latest offerings from Apple, they are set to be the next thing. Some even say that they have already been outdated the mobile phone.

The Tricorder & The Bio Bed

The TRICORDER could detect atmospheric conditions, minerals and resources or life signs depending upon its type.

MRI and CAT scans can, like Dr McCoy's hand-held tricorder and biobed, diagnose diseases by scanning the body.

The team at Yale University are developing a portable biomarker detector which they claim will be able to identify signs of illness from a sample of blood within 20 minutes.

The Tr^nsporter

Okay so the TRANSPORT isn't quite with us, but scientists have had some success with moving tiny amounts of matter from one area to another—atoms. The technology is very limited, but it does mean that one day, we could well be using

transporters as a mode of transport.

This real-world

teleportation device (ion trap show here) just moves atoms. C. Lackner

The touchscreen

In Star Trek The Next Generation, everything was done with a TOUCHSCREEN -- with a sexy look that could not be beaten.

Now everything has a touchscreen, including a little thing called the iPhone.

FL@T SCREEN TVS

The first flat screen I saw was on Star Trek when it was broadcast in the UK in 1969/1970. I don't think I need to say anymore.

Tr^nsp^rent @luminium

This next invention however is AWESOME! In the film STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE

HOME, the intrepid crew of the Starship Enterprise is assigned the daunting task of traveling back in time to 1986, capturing a pair of humpback whales, and bringing them to the future, (all so that the aliens who originally put whales on earth will stop destroying the planet).

To construct an adequate tank for the whales on board their borrowed Klingon spaceship, good old Scotty goes to a plexiglass maker and gives him the extremely

valuable recipe for"transparent aluminum" in exchange for the first batch. Now, transparent aluminum sounds ridiculous, right? Well, today we actually have such a thing. Yep, they take aluminum powder,

mix it with some other goodies, subject the compound to extremely high temperatures, polish and, voila: transparent aluminum.

Currently, the goal is to use transparent aluminum (called ALON) as a superior replacement for bullet proof glass, but of course there are tons of possible applications for such a material.

The Univers^l Tr^nsl^tor

Another brilliant invention, the universal translator. Like the Star Trek device that translates alien languages, the US military is using the Phraselator... in Iraq... for speech translation.

... and phone manufacturer NEC is launching the first mobile phone with speech translation.

Tr^ctor Be^m

Another really way-out idea from Star Trek is the

tractor beam, but it's not that far out anymore. Optical tweezers are a scientific instrument that

uses a focused laser beam to provide an attractive or repulsive force. Okay, so it's only on a microscopic level at the moment, but watch this space!

The Communic^tions E^rpiece

While Uhura's earpiece wasn't copywrited as 'Bluetooth', it certainly did much the same job as a Bluetooth headset today!

Clo^king device

And for my last item in the world of science, Harry Potter has his invisibility cloak and the Enterprise its cloaking technology. For us humble humans in the real world, scientists are developing stealth technology. From radar-absorbing dark paint to active camouflage, they are looking at a special "meta" materials, that theoretically could make light curve around an object and to make it appear as if it were not there at all. Even the chaps at Top Gear ran a

fascinating experiment into cloaking technology that had a degree of success, but the physicists claim they have proved that it is possible to manipulate space and time so that whole events are hidden from view. That's somewhat scary!

A A A In the next issue of the Runabout, I'll be sharing the final part of this article which will illustrate, not only that science fiction is becoming science fact, but that it's been here all along!

How to M^ke ^ Trubble

LCDR I^n Struthers, USS @lb^

Yes it says Trubble, as I don’t want to infringe copyright laws. I first made these (some trial and error involved) for a charity stall my own ship ran at a local gala; we won best stall that year.

Wh^t you will need

• Fluffy material for the main body - any kind it doesn’t need to be plain. I’ve used zebra print before, but the material I’ve used here is giraffe.

• Stuffing for the inside - I find a cheep hypoallergenic pillow is perfect.

• A small plate.

• Marker pen.

• Scissors.

• A needle and thread.

How to m^ke

1. Carefully trace around the plate. Then cut around the mark made by the pen.

Page 15: The Runabout -1- Issue 16: December 2015 · September December 18 February 22 May 22 August 22 November Please remember that the Editor only edits the magazine so unless you make

The Runabout -15- Issue 16: December 2015

2. Sew around the edge of the material loosely so you can draw it together to make a pouch to put the stuffing in, as pictured above.

3. Once you have the Trubble full of stuffing, sew the underneath closed and fluff it up, hey presto, you’ve made a Trubble.

I’ve not been able to find anything to put inside the"beastie" to make it sing, chirp or purr, so these are without voice.

From the Medic^l Dep^rtment of the USS @lb^

LT M^rtin Str^ng, CMO, USS @lb^

Well, it's been a busy few months since being promoted to Chief Medical Officer for the best ship in STARFLEET: the Alba.

Nurse Frany has been promoted to Assistant Chief Medical Officer, and we have a new crew member, Iain McKinnon Waddell who is also trained as an Intensive Care Staff Nurse. We had pleasure in offering Iain the position of Head of Intensive Care Nursing. Iain was also promoted to LTJG after passing his OCC exam.

The Emergency Medical Hologram, David Beveridge, has been functioning swimmingly, although he refuses to have his behavioural subroutines diagnosed. Whenever our Engineering crew approach, he miraculously dons a very large pair of surgical gloves and starts humming the 'Ride of the Valkyries'.

Our Field Medic, Karen Welsh has been on hand to help with the recent Rigellian Flu vaccinations and Carol Paul, our Medical Technician, has been on call for any unexpected night roster mishaps.

I have also been assisting our Quartermaster, Ian Struthers, with designing a new window sticker and possible device sticker. This has been with the cross help and idea of Darren Jamieson of the USS Rikers Beard, who has kindly agreed to tailor the design for the Alba. Ian has taken over the fine tuning of the design and will confirm prices and orders for anyone who is interested. I know I certainly am!

I have also attempted to make contact with Star Club

Italia. My parents were on holiday in Italy and there was a stand there. However, I think the universal translator doesn't work as I have not had a reply yet!

On another note, I ordered a Nemesis era medical outfit from www.cosplaysky.co.uk and am very impressed with the quality, although the plastic comm badge was snapped on delivery. However putting on the new USS Alba comm badge sets it off just nicely!

Also as the Region 20 Summit is fast approaching. I am really looking forward to meeting the other crew members; I think it will be a really fun weekend, and with great company.

Could I also ask other crew, wherever you are stationed, as a personal note, I had a kidney and pancreas transplant three years ago in July, so I am always promoting the idea of organ donation. One person could save up to seven seriously ill people. You can donate liver, kidney, heart, pancreas, cataracts and lungs. Although most people either baulk at the idea or just ignore the idea of donating, my donor was a young seventeen-year-old and without his bravery and courage, I can honestly say I wouldn't be here writing this article today.

If you haven't already, perhaps you could register at www.organdonation.nhs.uk/ . Thank you.

Bri^n Boru: The L^st Gre^t High King of Irel^nd

With the launching of our latest shakedown chapter, the USS Brian Boru, some

maybe wondering about the origins of the name. With that in mind, I set out to

investigate ...

The line between Irish Legend and Irish Myth has often been blurred, especially as the retelling of heroic deeds has been passed on through generations.

Brian Boru was no legend although his life deeds were legendary. He was very much a real man and was in fact the last great High King of Ireland and perhaps the greatest military leader the country has ever known.

Brian Boru was born Brian Mac Cennétig. He mother was sister to the mother of Conor, the King of Connaught.

His brother, Mahon, had become King of Munster in 951, upon the death of their father, Cennétig. Together they fought against the invading Norsemen, who had imposed taxes in Munster. This struggle eventually led to the murder of Mahon in 975 by the Ostermen (Norse). Brian avenged his brother's death by killing the King of the Ostermen of Limerick, King Ímar.

From this point onwards Brian held Munster as his own, including the pivotal trade-centre of Limerick. He marched into Connaught and Leinster and joined forces with Mael Sechnaill II in 997. Together they divided Ireland between them.

The Norse settlers in Dublin especially ranged against Brian but were defeated at Glen Máma where the King of Leinster was captured. The King of Dublin, Sitric Silkenbeard, was soon defeated too.

In 1002 Brian demanded of his comrade Mael Sechnaill that he recognise him as King of Ireland. Mael agreed, partially because many of his own people viewed Brian as a hero who had restored Ireland to greatness after the Viking invasions. The rule of the UíNéill's was thus at an end as a non-O'Neill was proclaimed as King. The O'Neill's had been rulers for over 600 years.

Page 19: The Runabout -1- Issue 16: December 2015 · September December 18 February 22 May 22 August 22 November Please remember that the Editor only edits the magazine so unless you make

The Runabout -19- Issue 16: December 2015

He earned his name as 'Brian of the Tributes' (Brian Boru) by collecting tributes from the minor rulers of Ireland and used the monies raised to restore monasteries and libraries that had been destroyed during the invasions.

The Norsemen were not done yet however, and once more waged war on Brian Boru and his followers at Clontarf in Dublin in 1014. The King of Connaught, Tadhg O'Conor refused to ally with Brian against the Ostermen although Uí Fiachrach Aidne and Uí Maine did join with him.

Despite the lack of backing from the men of Connaught, the Munstermen won the day but lost Brian Boru in the battle. This battle was a major turning point as it finally subjugated the Norse presence in Ireland who were henceforth considered subordinate to the Kingships of Ireland. Their military threat had been ended and they retreated to the urban centres of Dublin, Waterford, Limerick, Wexford, and Cork. They eventually became completely hibernicized and integrated into Gaelic culture.

After his death and the death of one of his sons, his remaining sons, Tadg and Donnchad, were unable to assume the kingship which was assumed by Mael Sechnaill. He died in 1022 after which the role of High King of Ireland became more of a position in name only, rather than that of a powerful ruler.

Perhaps the best that should be said of Brian Boru therefore, is that he was the last great High King of Ireland.

Str^nge New… E^rth>

LCDR Eric^ Smith, USS Hyperion

Apologies for the lack of official data at the start of this log. My name is Smith, but I am not entirely sure what my rank is, it got mumbled at me over a scrambled comm link, and the computer refuses to pull up my personnel file. My colleague, Williams, says she's a Commander, but I can't pull up her personnel file either, so I just call her Williams. We were routinely scouting in a shuttlepod from USS Hyperion an unknown amount of time ago (the chronometer is also not working and the local timekeeping service is wildly inaccurate), when our instruments stopped working. We barely managed to land safely on the nearest M-Class planet. For want of a better term, I suppose we ought to consider ourselves a skeleton crew.

We seem to have had some form of temporal mishap, possibly even crossed over into a parallel world. You see, the planet we are on is entirely populated by humans. We believe it may even be Earth, but with a strange twist. From what intelligence we've managed to gather so far, we're in the early 21st century. However, when we landed, we were greeted by a crowd, all applauding, and as we stepped out of the shuttlepod, people shouted strange things like"Great Cosplay!" and"Really accurate props!"

We were ushered into a large building along with several hundred other people, all wearing different and strange clothing. We believe this marks them as belonging to the same tribe as there were several repetitions of the same clothing throughout the large crowd. Initially, we were comforted by the sight of several Starfleet uniforms, though they were from varying eras, including ones we'd never seen before, but these turned out to be tribal costumes as well. Fortunately, the members of that tribe unanimously greeted us as"Trekkies" (which we presume to be the name of their tribe, though further analysis is needed).

We managed to catch a glimpse of what passes for viewscreens here, though our tricorders seemed to interfere with the signal, so we couldn't take any readings for later study. Among many unusual sets of imagery, there were several depicting Starfleet officers in what is technically these people's distant future! On enquiry, people gave us strange looks, and kept asking the same question."How come you're wearing Starfleet uniforms if you've never seen Star

Trek before?" I am unsure what 'Star Trek' is, but I will attempt to enquire

further into the matter as soon as I acquire some civilian clothing (my inquiry is always met with the above question whilst I am in uniform).

I must end this report here as there seems to be a number of Borg in the building, and though they have not yet assimilated anyone and seem to be laughing with members of the 'Trekkie' tribe, we cannot decide whether they are simply people in costume or if this is a new tactic by the collective.

Smith out.

Hello from the USS Ph^r^oh

C@PT D^vid Burton, USS Ph^ro^h

As one of the newest chapters to the region, I would like to say hello to everybody and introduce our ship. The USS Pharaoh may be new to SFI, but we've been going for NINETEEN years, so we've been around a while.

We are an Eastbourne based Star Trek group comprising members from all walks of life who have come

together to celebrate Gene Roddenberry’s dream. We love all Star Trek and love to discuss everything that relates to this fabulous series and meet twice a month.

Our first meeting is at our local church hall where we engage in our LARP activities. Zig mentioned us in a piece in a previous issue of the Runabout regarding Live Action Role Play and it really is lots of fun. We take a fictional mission scenario based upon a storyline created by myself and my XO and then the whole crew continue the story using Starfleet protocols etc. Our church hall is converted into something resembling a starship and there’s a great area for away teams too. It is superb fun and offers members and guests a chance to actually 'serve' in Starfleet as an officer aboard a starship.

At our second meeting of the month, we gather at a member’s house to watch our favourite Star Trek episodes and movies, followed by a debate about the episode or movie. We have refreshments at each meeting provided by the crew and it's another great way to socialise.

If ever you are in the area and would like to join us for one of our meetings, you are more than welcome to do so. Just drop me a line and I'll forward you the details.

INVIT@TION: Would you like to le^rn how to run @rtemis ^t Conventions>

CMDR Robb Dunphy, USS Bri^n Boru

Last year, at Dublin City Comic Con, the Cuchulain had a stand at with two machines showing some Artemis. A conversation that came from that was why just two stations? Why just one ship? I have the equipment to run two full ships myself, and that got me thinking. that could give SFI a much larger footprint at DCC if we can.

But ... why not run a little workshop too? Teach other members of SFI here in Region 20 how to actually setup and run Artemis for their own starships?

With that in mind, and with an idea for it sometime next year, who would be interested in learning how to setup and run Artemis, and run events well? I've been doing it for over a year now for quite a few conventions in Ireland, so trust me when I say it's possible, and can be great fun.

If you'd like to know more, please contact me at [email protected] .

Artemis: Spaceship Bridge Simulator is a multiplayer co-operative spaceship simulation game created by Thomas Robertson for Windows, iOS, and Android devices. The game is designed to be played between three to six local players] with each player using a separate computer that provides a different spaceship bridge station, such as helm control or engineering.

St^r Trek: 'The Ultim^te Voy^ges' ^t the @lbert H^ll in London

C@PT M^tthew Bergin, USS Iceni

1st November 2015

What a day! Not only was it my birthday (where I enjoyed a meal out with friends in the evening) but the XO was able to get us tickets too see the latest Star Trek offerings at the Albert Hall.

Last time at the Albert Hall, it was the two J.J. films being played on the large screen, which was directly above the orchestra who played throughout the film and gave the films that extra wow. This time it was a montage of different clips from the Trek TV series and films that were put together in small segments with

the orchestra playing below.

Before each new segment a voice (Michael Dorn's) said a few meaningful words to describe the next piece, which added that little something extra. The

music they played was fantastic with great effort being taken to choose the right piece for each segment of clips (my only criticism was not enough Voyager or Deep Space Nine for me, and the XO saying sometimes the clips didn't gel too well and seemed a little disjointed, but I was happy).

Would I go again? Yes I would. I think the J.J. films were presented better but this was still worth the trip. You needed to be there in person to understand but sometimes even I felt a little chill when hearing the orchestra play such beautiful music as I watched some of my favourites above on the big scree (like a piece from TOS: Amok Time or Star Trek Voyager's, Year of Hell)

This was a birthday I won't forget in a hurry. A joint love of Star Trek brought my wife and I together and helped me meet many great people and make lots of new friends. Here is hoping they show the 3rd J.J. film at the Albert Hall as well, sometime in the not so distant future, after it has been too the cinemas.

MISSION REPORT: Region 20 Summit

CMDR @m^nd^ "P^nd^" B^rrow, USS St^rg^zer

From the desk of the @ssist^nt Surgeon Gener^l – R20

Despite the low attendance at our second Regional Summit, delegates enjoyed a wonderful opportunity to meet up with old friends, make new friends and to share in a lot of fun and laughter.

'The Golden Horta Award–2015' given for the best/worst joke was convincingly won by FCAPT Scott Peter, captain of the USS Alba at the President’s Supper on the Friday evening. Those present were subjected to a plethora of wildly coloured Hawaiian shirts of varying brilliant shades and hues—perhaps we should create a new award for the ‘Most Dazzling Shirt’.

Saturday morning was a great opportunity to have a look around York and then back to the quaint hotel for the more formal presentations.

I was happy to give a brief presentation written by our Surgeon General, Dr Gregory Fant, PhD, MSHS, outlining the aims and goals of the Surgeon General’s Office in STARFLEET International.

My very, very grateful thanks must go to FCAPT Richard Sams for his very memorable 'blood should be on

the inside' presentation—including live volunteers, and to LCDR Martin Strang, CMO USS Alba, for his very personal talk on what it means to be a recipient of a kidney transplant.

MISSION REPORTS: The Klingon B^nquet

C@PT M^tthew Bergin, USS Iceni

The mission to Starbase 24 was a success all round with the Friday night's meal and entertainment being a lovely way to start the weekend off after it had taken us longer than predicted to get there. The quarters we were allocated on Level 3 were very nice and spacious, but with so much going on we had little need for our room other than when it came time to sleep at night.

Over the course of the weekend I got too meet some Klingons, at least one Vulcan, some humans and one rather friendly Andorian. The XO got to play some games on offer (many of which she brought herself) and we got to meet some of the local people when we visited their shops to purchase a few things for later in the year. (Oh! And another board game for the XO to add to her ever growing collection.)

As well as the disco, a quiz, buffet and lots of chatting with friends, there were also a few people given awards of some kind or another, one being a member of our chapter, John Hardy. John is now a Lieutenant Commander with all the rights and privileges pertaining thereto. Very well deserved, John.

The talks, auction and quizzes were all great fun and it was nice to be able to have photos with the guests if we wanted. Sante Claus was there selling one or two things, and the wonderfully talented Georgie Starbuck had a rather nice model display up too.

The three-course meal on the Saturday night was great, though I would like to know how the hotel managed to mix up 'no veg and lots of gravy' meaning I got loads of veg and no gravy. The second disco went down well, too, with lots of people up dancing the night away.

Thank you to everyone who made the weekend what it was, from Charlotte and Jim for organising it, to people like Brian Philpot, Daniel Adams, Susan M Griffiths, Philip Robert Young, Sarahleigh Mackenzie Richards—the whole SB24 Command Team in fact—for helping to make it the success it was. Also thanks go to the people who did the disco each night and those running the photo shoot area.

Lastly, thank you to Brian Philpot for the lollipop tree (a cardboard tube that

had lollipops in it which people could have for a small donation to charity), David Limburg at Santeclaus for donating a few Star Trek items to go on our next charity table (much appreciated) and an unexpected belated anniversary gift from Mr Dolphin.

It's always a shame when these things come to an end and you have to go back to doing what you usually do during the week, but I know this event is taking place again next year. If I am able to get the time off and the XO agrees, then there may be a chance we will be back too do it all over again next year.

Left Starbase Janice Rand at 9 o'clock and went by shuttle to the air tram station. Caught the air tram and arrived at Starbase 24 safely. After checking in, I sat down and met with friends, old and new. Very surprised to get my promotion from our RC, COMM Adams in the evening, and enjoyed a game of pass the parcel.

D^y 2

After a good night's sleep, I was wide awake for next day, which included a Q&A with Virginia Hey , an auction and a games room .

Come the evening, at the Banquet, I was lucky enough to sit on Virginia Hey's table. After a nice meal, we had a good and funny game with Virginia and then settled down for the disco. At the end of a long evening, when everything had settled down and finished, went to bed.

Everything over and can't wait until next year.

USS Q^pl^'z 16,@nnu^l Celebr^tion Dinner LT M^rtin Str^ng, USS @lb^

Chief Medic^l Officer / It^li^n @mb^ss^dor to the USS Q@PL@'Z

St^rd^te:201509.20

I was invited to attend the above by the Star Trek Italia Club Chapter, the USS QAPLA'Z and originally, I had turned this down due to travelling costs etc. However, after being persuaded by my wife and my sister, I arranged with the Qapla'z's yeoman, Manuela Braghetta (Manu) to attend as a 'surprise'. The reaction I received was one of absolute shock and I received a message saying that Manu couldn't believe it!!

We tried to keep it a secret for a week or so, but in the end I had to tell Marco that I was coming over. I think the message he sent back was full of shock; he couldn't believe that I was going over especially for them.

I received a photo from them showing the surprise on two of our friends faces when they told them. (They were helping to arrange the dinner so had to be told to arrange settings.)

Between Manu and Marco, they arranged to pick me up from the airport at Bologna and take me to my sister and brother-in-law's flat at Ferrara,

which is about a ten-minute drive from their apartment. Manu advised that they would like me to go to their house on the Friday

night for dinner, with Erika and Enrico, and they would pick me up. At their apartment, Marco took great pride in showing me his Star Trek

collection, including items I hadn't even seen, such as rare federation map books from the 1980's and an original series communicator which made incredibly jealous!

We sat down for dinner, and if anyone has been to Italy you will know that they love food, and how to prepare and serve it. Manu and Marco did not

disappoint. A starter of meats and Ferrara bread, together with spinach pastries and hotdog pastries and of course ... Prosecco!

During dinner, I presented Marco with a plaque certificate from the USS Alba to the USS Qapla'z.

For desert, Erika had made a homemade Tiramisu, which was to an authentic Italian recipe.

On the Saturday, I was picked up and whisked away for the day to Padova, about an hour drive from Ferrara. Padova (Padua) is a city in northern Italy’s Veneto region. It’s known for the frescoes by Giotto in its Scrovegni Chapel and the vast 13th century basilica of St.

Anthony. The basilica, with its Byzantine-style domes and notable artworks, contains the namesake saint’s tomb which still contains a viable piece of the saint's tongue in glass, which people flock to pray and get healed. It is Italy's version of Lourdes.

I was taken on an open-top bus tour and had lunch. Whilst there, I saw my new Medical Shuttle, a Tesla car, which was on display, however it wouldn't fit into

my hand luggage so had to leave it! We also stopped and had a coffee

at the famous Perdocchi café. The Perdocchi coffee is an Italian coffee whisked with cream and mint. It had a very pleasant taste and smell. We then took a drive back to Ferrara.

Sund^y 201509.21

I was picked up and we went to a restaurant about 15 minutes drive from Ferrara, called Hostaria dei Savonarola where we set up for the day. My sister and brother-in-law joined us as well as thirty other members of the Qapla'z and Star Trek Italia club. I was invited to sit at the head table with the captain of the Qapla'z, Marco. On his left was John Mongini, who with his own movie and science fiction collection has opened Musef - the Museum of Science Fiction, which shows off memorabilia from TV and film throughout the last 50 years.

The dinner started with Marco welcoming guests and introducing me as one of the guests of honour and a crew member from the Alba from Scotland who had travelled to Italy to meet Star Trek fans from across the world.

Dinner was served, and involved a three course meal, in true Italian style lots of course!

A competition was held during the meal, where we had to guess the number of beans in a jar, and also an auction for a limited edition original series metal lunch box with a secret prize inside. Money was being raised for ADO Ferrara (http://www.adohtf.it/) where they were collecting to build a house for the sick ALS and their families. With the money they collected they 'bought' three bricks. A total of 161 Euros was raised.

Every year a special 5kg cake is made for a different theme. A competition was held to guess the cake. I had a guess, that as I had come over, that the cake was in the shape of the USS Alba Comm badge, and yep! I won!

A raffle was held and everyone attending received prizes ranging from calendars to special edition figurines. I was also presented with an away mission reward.

The Runabout -35- Issue 16: December 2015

Once the meal was over, we were invited to the Museum of Science Fiction in Gaiba, about a 15-minute drive from the restaurant. We had a special tour from the owner and a history (in Italian) with Google-Manu translating. The museum is free entry and after an hour or so we went our separate ways, although I was given a honorary membership of the museum! John (Giovanni) is one of Italy first and foremost experts and historians in the field of science fiction cinema and he's the author of 'Storia del cinema di fantascienza', originally published as a two-volume book in 1976 and later expanded into a massive 11-volume opus

covering the history of sci-fi films from 1898 to 1999. After the museum tour, we all said our farewells and departed. Enrico

decided to get a few more selfies in though: Once we retuned back to Ferrara, I said my goodbyes to Manu and Marco for

the evening, and my sister and I went for a walk through the town. I took the opportunity of posing in front of Ferrara castle for a photo!

It is fair to say that I have made some good friends in Italy and the hospitality that they showed me, being only the second time they met me, was fantastic. I felt honoured to be in their presence. I am looking forward to going back again early next year as they have a big 5-day convention in Rimini, so am looking to go there and meet up with Marco and Manu again. They are also looking to come to Scotland so am planning to show them the same hospitality with myself, my wife and the crew of the USS Alba.

The 2017 Summit

COMM D^niel @d^ms, RC

The 2015 Regional Summit was a fantastic event. A success in quantifiable ways, both in terms of the fact that it reached its financial target and the laughter that rang through the halls of the Elmbank Hotel. However, there were challenges for the event. Seemingly, three out of four weekends there is an event going on with interest to UK fans. This reflected in the amount of attendees that we had on that weekend. While it was an enjoyable time for all that attended, it wasn’t massively reflective of the Region.

Looking forward to 2016, it's clear that it is going to be just as busy, if not busier. On top of a convention/Comicon schedule that doesn’t seem likely to slow down, there is also the new Star Trek film coming out as well as celebrations of the 50th anniversary of Trek, both of which should provide plenty of opportunities for members across the region to meet and have fun. Likewise, I will be very surprised if there is not a major official event towards the end of the year.

Therefore, this would be my suggestion that:

1. There will be no full Regional summit in Region 20 for 2016. Instead of this, chapters are asked to use regional Facebook pages to highlight events they may be running or attending that are of interest to members of the region. Likewise, if anyone is attending a Comicon, convention or other event, perhaps members can be encouraged to meet there.

2. We hold the 2017 conference in Scotland. I suggest this because the Alba has travelled down to two Regional conferences and have supported our event, and it just seems fair to allow them the chance to deliver a regional event in their area . In addition, I have seen a lot of informal interest from overseas SFI region in attending events in Scotland.

3. In May the Region reviews the possibility of a single, one-night event in a central location at the end of 2016.

Your thoughts would be appreciated. Please send them to [email protected] . Thank you.

Tiberius returned to his apartment and sat at his desk with a mug of coffee. He turned the computer on and sat staring at the screen for a long time. He was going to send a message to Admiral Malabaare requesting a meeting. He wanted to tell her that he would not take no for an answer, that he would not be denied, but he remembered his mother’s words; that he could not demand from them, only request. He recorded his message and then played it back.

"Erase," he said and started again. It took him an hour to get it right—an hour and three mugs of coffee. He listened to it one more time and then sent it.

He leaned back in his chair and sighed. There were two ways that message could be answered: an affirmative or a negative. He hoped Winona Malabaare would understand what it meant to him; why it meant so much to know the truth.

He headed for the shower and then bed. Tomorrow could be a very busy day for him. It could start with being called to the Admiral’s office. He hoped so but at the same time dreaded it. She was a tough nut to crack, very strong-willed professional woman used to having her way and having her commands obeyed.

As he curled up under the covers, he allowed his mind to run over the events of the evening—of his mother’s outburst when she saw the captain’s rank markings on his uniform sleeves; pain, buried deep over the years—the pain of a lost love and the sharp reminder of it at the sight of Stephen MacAlpin’s son at the same age. He woke when the computer chimed letting him know he had

received a message. He touched the face of his watch to see the time – 05:15! He rolled over and buried his head in the pillow and tried to ignore having heard the sound.

It chirped again and then again. He realised after a moment that the incessant sound was not a message coming in but a call. Someone was trying to attract his attention. He stumbled out of bed and punched respond.

"MacAlpin!" Admiral Malabaare’s face filled the screen. "Don’t just give me audio, MacAlpin! I want to see you." Tiberius pressed the key to open a visual link. "Morning, Admiral," he said, knowing he still looked half asleep while she

appeared either not to have been to bed yet or had been up for hours. Either way, she looked as fresh as a daisy. He knew that he would look as he felt—someone who had been rudely awakened from sleep.

Admiral Malabaare smiled. "Woke you, did I? Sorry. Anyway, I got your message. I want to see you in my

office at 07:00, without delay." MacAlpin looked at her and then nodded. "Yes, ma’am." He opened his mouth as though to ask a question. She held up her hand. "Save any questions you might have for me. You may ask them when you are

here." MacAlpin blinked as the call ended and the screen went black. That was odd, he thought. He looked at his watch again. 05:30. No point in

going back to bed. He had to be in the Admiral’s office at seven precisely. He sighed and made some coffee and curled up on the couch for a while reading through a list he had begun to make of things he would talk about with his command crew.

When he had finished his coffee, he showered and dressed. It was now 06:30 and he headed out, taking a shuttle cab to the HQ Complex. It was exactly one minute to seven when he arrived in the outer office and the officer on duty looked up.

"Good morning, Captain MacAlpin. You are to go straight through." He went on and at exactly seven o’clock, he pressed the buzzer and was

admitted. As he had been heading for the office, all kinds of thoughts ran through his mind. Had his message been too demanding? Would she understand why he had to see the file? Why he had to know?

Admiral Malabaare was looking at her screen. "Sit, MacAlpin," she said. "You have been asking questions."

"Yes, ma’am." "Questions you have been warned not to ask." "Yes, ma’am." MacAlpin got the distinct feeling that he could be in trouble. "I got your message, of course, in which you requested to see the files. At

around the same time I received a message from Rear Admiral Galen informing me that you were persistently demanding the truth—going so far as to challenge Galen’s courage and his loyalty to your father."

MacAlpin bit his lip. "He told you that? I told him I was sorry." "Yes, he told me that too, but you cannot say things like that. However, it

does not appear that he is too angry with you. He suggests I permit you to see what we have on file."

Tiberius held his breath. "I warn you that you will not find all the answers that you seek. There will be

many left unanswered. There is more than one reason why the events that surrounded your father’s death are classed as top secret. We do not know the answers. The people who could give us the answers are dead—all except for Galen and, if he knows anything, he has not told us. Telling us only that he was left behind on the planet to finish some work they had begun—to be collected at a certain time. He was arrested by the planet’s government and imprisoned and your father never returned for him. The rest they say is history. If there is anything more to the story then he has not told us. Your father’s final log was never sent; no doubt being destroyed with the ship."

MacAlpin bit his lip. Hearing references to what was lost with the loss of the Venture. He knew that log should have been sent. Whatever his father intended to do, that last log should have been submitted.

What if it had been sent but had been hidden away? Was there something in that log that explained his reasons? The log must surely have given information as to why Galen was not on the ship, why he was on the planet ... that there was a reason he had been left behind. Could it be that the head of the Fleet had deliberately hidden the truth all these years? And by this, landed the blame on Stephen MacAlpin who was unable to defend himself?

Admiral Malabaare rested her elbows on the desk and looked at MacAlpin. "I will grant you the access you require, but not until you have launched. You

have duties to attend to, new crew to meet and work alongside with to prepare for your mission. If you get the access now, it will become the only thing you desire. It will become an obsession. It is clear to me that you feel deeply about it and your loyalty does you credit."

She paused and the unspoken thought even if it is misplaced was pretty clear

to MacAlpin. He nodded, understanding. "Dismissed. Oh, and do not tell anyone that you have the files. It is not

necessary." MacAlpin stood up. "Yes, ma’am. Thank you for giving me permission. You are right that it is

important to me, more so now than ever before." Admiral Malabaare did not misunderstand him. "You are the same age as your father was, and now the same rank, and have

been given essentially the same ship. Now you may go ... unless there is anything else?"

MacAlpin had turned as though to leave, but turned around and came back. "Yes. About the assignments. I know they are to be posted today and that

basically it is the entire crew of the Magellan, but I understand there are to be some changes. May I request that no change is made to the First Officer? I wish to have Commander Ross at my side on my first command. We have worked together and his experience will be valuable to me."

Admiral Malabaare looked up. "Commander Ross submitted a request for a transfer." "When?" "Just after the ceremony. I have not authorised it yet." Tiberius closed his eyes for a second. "That was before I spoke to him then, Admiral. I have since had a talk with

Ross and have told him that I want him on the Venture. He said he would be glad to be my First Officer. So could you please not authorise his transfer and see that he does come to the Venture?"

Admiral Malabaare nodded. "I was going to deny his request at any rate," she said. "You are right that his

experience will be invaluable to you. Use what skills you learned from serving with Xander Galen. He was an excellent captain."

She turned to her computer screen and MacAlpin knew he was dismissed. He saluted and left the room.
