The Summary for the January 19th Meeting

The Rotary Club of San Jose held its weekly meeting at the San Jose's Rotary Summit Center.

We were personally greeted by the Public Relations Committee under the leadership of Mary Curtis. The Committeeis charged works with local media to generate publicity and recognition for the community and international serviceperformed by the Rotary Club of San Jose.

"President elect-elect," Mike Blach filled-in for Larry and presided over the meeting with his usual well-toned voiceand friendly demeanor. Mike called us to order for the Club's 4822nd meeting. We joined in singing God BlessAmerica with Ray Silva and the piano of Paul Tumason.

Our "Wisdom for the Day" came from Cathy Kimball. Her good thoughts related to the addressing one's enemies. She quoted from Martin Luther King, Jr.:

"Another way that you love your enemy is this: When the opportunity presents itself for you to defeatyour enemy, that is the time, which you must not do it. There will come a time, in many instances, when the person who hates you most, the person who has misused you most, the person who hasgossiped about you most, the person who has spread false rumors about you most, there will come atime when you will have an opportunity to defeat that person. It might be in terms of arecommendation for a job; it might be in terms of helping that person to make some move in life. That's the time you must do it. That is the meaning of love. In the final analysis, love is not thissentimental something that we talk about. It's not merely an emotional something. Love is creative, understanding goodwill for all men. It is the refusal to defeat any individual. When you rise to the levelof love, of its great beauty and power, you seek only to defeat evil systems. Individuals who happen tobe caught up in that system, you love, but you seek to defeat the system."

And from the President,

"But at a time when our discourse has become so sharply polarized - at a time when we are far tooeager to lay the blame for all that ails the world at the feet of those who think differently than we do -it's important for us to pause for a moment and make sure that we are talking with each other in a waythat heals, not a way that wounds."

Thereafter we had news and humor from John McLeod. The News: DOW down; Obamacare subject to House vote;Giffords family considering out of state rehabilitation hospitals; Lieberman to retire from Senate in 2012; Palo AltoCity Council approves consolidated service plan with other peninsula cities. An example of the humor: two elderlypersons are driving through town. The passenger believes the driver ran a red light, becomes more certain after asecond red light is passed and certain after the third red light is run. Addressing the driver the passenger says,"You ran 3 red lights." To which the driver responds, "You mean I'm driving!"

Red Badgers Meg and Sunny Saini introduced themselves and served as holders of the

traveling mics for Rotarians with guests and visiting Rotarians. Mike requested MaryHiland come to the podium to introduce new Rotarian, Kathleen Krenek (Executive Director of Next Door Solutionsto Domestic Violence) to the "Best Rotary Club in the World."

Linda Gold was next up and she gave a brief update on Faces of Hope. Linda's presentation was heartfelt andmoving. It related to children programs to correct cleft lip and palate and assist burn victims undertaken by areaRotary clubs. She spoke with specificity about efforts last year in Guatemala and presented a Plaque to Mike fromthe children as words and symbol of thanks.

Dave Peterson introduced student guests from Santa Teresa High Interact.

Suzanne St. John-Crane announced the next Rotary After-Hours Mixer. It will be Feb. 3 between the hours of 5:30and 7:30 at CreaTV, 200 W. Julian, Suite 100. The event is limited to 60 people, so book now!

Feb. 2 - Rotary Personals - Shirley Lewis/Pamela Anderson-Brule will provide insight to their lives.

Gay Crawford introduced our speaker:

Dr. James Doty"Cyberknife"

James R. Doty, M.D., is a neurosurgeon, entrepreneur and philanthropist presently a Professor of Neurosurgery atStanford University who is Director of the El Camino Hospital Neuroscience Institute and Co-Director of itsCyberKnife program. He is recognized as a pioneer in the field of stereotactic radiosurgery and at one time wasCEO of Accuray, manufacturer of the CyberKnife.

He trained in neurosurgery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and served 9 years on active duty in the U.S.Army. Dr. Doty has developed medical devices, run and started companies and remains an advisor to a number ofmedical device companies and venture capital firms. He is also on the Advisory Board of the Fogarty Institute ofInnovation at El Camino Hospital.

In addition to endowing chairs at multiple academic institutions, his philanthropy supports healthcare initiativesaround the world. He is Founder and Director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education atStanford University of which His Holiness the Dalai Lama is a benefactor.

The doctor's speech had three parts: the technical; the entrepreneurial; and the humanitarian,

The Cyberknife is a robotic device utilizing extremely accurate multiple laser beams from several angles andprecision adjustment of focus and movement (including that of the patient during the procedure) to attack tumorsand lesions. The results have shown a high degree of success over a short period of therapy, proven obviously lessevasive and with lessened adverse reaction. The procedure has had especial effectiveness in the areas of the lung, liver, spine, pancreas, breast and prostrate. It shows great promise in addressing other regions of the humananatomy as well. It is FDA approved; and insurance companies cover most of its uses.

As a doctor the speaker has been attracted to new medical devices in his area of practice. In connection therewithhe has met economic success and failure. As an entrepreneur has discovered that success in endeavors requiresbelief in an idea and its success, belief in its capacity to do good and in the rightness of the idea and its result forhumankind.

His entrepreneurial success has been ground in a vision of that the most satisfaction and happiness in life is foundin one's selfless efforts in acts of compassion and altruism that subordinate the self-serving chimera of ego. Hiswork with the Cyberknife is an exemplar of his philosophy.

Respectfully submitted,

Joe Moless
