Mark Purdy"Sports"

MARK PURDY has been a sports columnist at the San Jose Mercury News since 1984. He previously worked at the Dayton(Ohio) Journal Herald, Chicago Tribune, Cincinnati Enquirer and Los Angeles Times. He has been a contributing columnist to theSporting News and has made television appearances on ABC's Nightline, Court TV, ESPN "Outside the Lines" and many Bay Area radio and televisionprograms.

On five occasions, he has been named to the Associated Press Sports Editors' annual list of America's Top 10 Sports Columnists. The South Bay'sMetro Weekly has named him the "Best Local Sportswriter" and he was twice selected as Ohio Sportswriter of the Year by his colleagues whileworking in Cincinnati.

A native of Celina, Ohio, Purdy is a 1974 graduate of Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism. He has covered 10 Olympic Games,more than 25 Super Bowls and World Series and many other high-profile sports events. In the Bay Area, he is known as the columnist who named"McCovey Cove," the body of water behind right field at Pacific Bell Park, as a tribute to former Giants' slugger Willie McCovey. In 1989, he was amember of the Mercury News staff that received the Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of the "World Series earthquake" that struck the area just beforeGame 3 at Candlestick Park.

Rotary Name Change

Local Endowment name changed toRotary Club of San Jose Foundation

Due to some recent changes in the law and advice from professionals in our Rotary Club, the Trustees of our local Rotary Endowmenthave changed the name to the "Rotary Club of San Jose Foundation". We know this will create some confusion with The RotaryFoundation run by Rotary International so we will refer to the two different foundations as "the Club Foundation" and "the International

Foundation".

We apologize for the change, but there weren't many good options. For the next few months, we will continue to deposit any checks written to theSan Jose Rotary Endowment or anything similar. Heck, we will probably continue depositing those checks just as long as San Jose Rotarians want towrite them! Thanks for your understanding and cooperation.

Washington School Kids Share Easter with Kids In China

Washington School kids connect with kids at Hao Chong Elementary School in Zhongshan China via Skype and conference with them. Here are thepictures that help share with you the event. The kids shared with the kids in China the up coming cultural event of Easter and Passover, an eventthat they know little about. The students in China shared their New Years Event with the Washington School kids.

There is a Mandarin Language Club at noon at Washington School. "Our kids" are learning a THIRD language!

Local Interact Clubs Host "End Polio Now!" Dinner

Lincoln High School and Bellarmine Interact Clubs, sponsored by Rotary Club of San Jose Interact Committee, are collaboratingwith Interact Clubs of Notre Dame and Mitty High Schools to host the first Annual Charity Dinner to benefit Polio Plus. Theevent is scheduled for Saturday, April 10th - from 6 PM to 8:30 PM - at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 5700Comanche Drive in San Jose. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Homemade Mexican entrees, sides, salads,drinks and desserts will be provided. April 24 Rotary's Annual Fishing Event

Saturday, April 24th is Rotary's Annual Fishing Event from 7:30am to 12:30pm for third graders at Sam Wool Lake at Ed LevinPark in Milpitas. Volunteers are needed to help kids set up tackle, bait hooks (no worms!) and net fish. District Conference April 23-25 in Monterey

Our District 5170 Celebration is on April 23-25, 2010 at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Resort and Spa, but you have to register byApril 5 to get in on the room rate savings and get a room at $149 per night. The first 20 Rotarians to register and stay at least onenight will receive a Club reimbursement of $30!

The golf tournament is filling quickly so register for the golf ASAP. Less than 35 spots are left. CreaTV San Jose's SJSU interns will be recording some of the lunch speakers for playback on Comcast Channel 15. SearchCreaTV San Jose's online programming schedule for specific dates and times of airings. Dick Bolles presentation will air onChannel 15 this Saturday night April 3 at 7:30. If you are not a Comcast customer but have broadband internet access, youmaybe able to view the video on demand here at CreaTV San Jose's website. The Summary of the March 31st Meeting

The Rotary Club of San Jose held its weekly meeting at the San Jose's Rotary Summit Center; and we were personally greeted by the MembershipInvolvement (Firesides) Committee under the leadership of Eric Heckman as Chair and Mark Novak as Vice-Chair. . It counts among its membersAlida Bray, Don Callahan Dick Campisi Barry Cristina, Rod Diridon, David Down, John Kennett, Ken McDonald, Vic LoBue, and Toni Wise. Thecommittee's mission statement provides as follows: The Membership Involvement Committee is committed to engage the members of the RotaryClub of San Jose in order to retain an active membership that is motivated to create a meaningful experience for all members in the club and toshare that experience in recruiting new members.

President Rod Diridon, Sr. humorously called us to order for the Club's 4785th by asking Peter Carter to join us and then much more seriouslywelcoming guests and fellow Rotarians. All joined in singing God Bless America with Ray Silva and the piano of Paul Tumason.

Our "Wisdom for the Day" came from the philosopher Epictetus. The topic was The Art of Living. Philosophy is a way of living. We should have theknowledge to distinguish things that can be changed from things that cannot be changed, accepting those that one does not have the power tochange and changing those that can be changed.

Thereafter we had news and humor, from John McLeod. The News: Market down; oil exploration to be allowed off Atlantic coast; SJ City Councilapproves regulation of pot clinics; 62% of San Joseans favor major league baseball coming here. The humor: Person sued movie theatre for$50,000 as arm rest struck her; theatre wins $75,000 as patron was struck while on cell phone during course of the movie. John's last joke waswhat President Rod called a "formula for divorce". Andy's wife seeking to avoid the signs of aging buys and applies numerous cosmetics. Finishedwith the products she inquires of her husband as to how old she looks. Her husband responds: skin---20 years, eyes---22 years, hair---25 years,face---23 years. The wife is ecstatic until Andy says, "Wait, I'm not finished; I have to add them up!"

Red Badgers Janet Kern of the RDA and Jocelyn Garcia-Thome of IBM introduced themselves and served as holders of the travelling microphones forRotarians with guests and vesting Rotarians. Rotarians with guests included Jorj Tilson, Karyn Sinunu-Towery, Christine Egan, Tom Bondi, AmariThomas, John Danner, Dick Whitney, Mark Walker, Sandra Soto, Dick Conniff, Kathy Muller, Susan Fitts (who stood tall), Dave Roberts, Chris DiSalvo, Peter Pabst, Mike Ing and Rod Diridon, Jr.

President Rod next asked Jason Stein and Leslee Hamilton to introduce new members, Robert Lee, an accountant and Church and Boy Scout leaderand Suzanne St. John-Crane, Executive Director of Create TV, the community channel.

Mark Walker then discussed Corporate Membership. The club has three membership efforts: regular, corporate and youth. Mark reported oncorporate efforts. 20% of our new members come from this effort.

Alida Bray announced Fireside dates and sought volunteers to host them. A slide show referenced plans, invitations, food, fire, and party. The lastslide showed the esteemed Bob Kieve dancing what President Rod said was the Flamenco and noted that Mr. Kieve had been taught the dance byJose Greco making Bob along with Jose the two best Flamenco dancers from the boroughs of New York.

Alida also mention a recycle event the Club is sponsoring: An After-Hour Tour of Greenwaste Sorting System on April 1`5th between 5:00 and7:00 p.m.

Jack Wimberly gave an update on the Historic Photo Project. The Project connects old San Jose with our newer version by pictures and audio. [Hasthe Club investigated sale of the pictures? For us old timers, they'd be great purchases.]

Jack also made a presentation for the Spirit Committee that was funny and very enjoyable even if it gave our very likeable President a hard time.Jack acted as the "man in the street" interviewer seeking to determine if visitors knew anything about those for who Mc Enery Convention Centerand Diridon Railway Station had been named. Interviewees were asked whether the name was that of a person, place or thing. President Rod cameoff second best except for us Rotarians where he remains A-No, 1 and a very good sport. The purpose of the Spirit Committee is "to bring energy,laughter and camaraderie to our Members." It sure did today. Members of the committee include Brian Adams, Mike Danberger, Cindy Faulkner,Dennis Fong, Dave Henderson, Ken McDonald, Stew Park, Carl, Salas Gary Shara, Jerry Silva, Karyn Sinunu-Towery, Elaine Sullivan-Digre, JackWimberly and Greg Yoder.

President Rod did the honors of introducing our speaker, member of Congress from San Jose, Zoe Lofgren (D.) of the 16th District. She presented astraight-forward presentation of her view of recent events near the Potomac. She hadn't addressed the club for awhile and as she noted a lot hashappened since her last presentation.

She presented not only a keen view of the situation but also having the ear and confidence of the Speaker of the House, an inside one. The changeshave been precipitated by a worldwide economic crisis, and a new President with majorities in both Houses. The economic distress led to two piecesof major legislation TARP and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act or "ARRA." The former was a financial institution safety net matter; thelatter a 787 billion economic stimulus package intended as a Keynesian "jump start" to the floundering economy by creating jobs, increasinginvestment, and encouraging consumer spending. Later in the speech she gave the apparent reason for the legislation: economists had advised that

unlike like FDR who ended the stimulus in response to the Great Depression too early it was necessary "to keep the foot on the gas pedal."

The Health Care legislation addressed inequities in the current system and sought to control the costs attendant to that care. 246,000 persons inSanta Clara County will be directly advantaged by the measure. The Congresswoman was frank in noting that the most popular provisions will comefirst; for example, provisions relating to pre-existing cover and preventative care. She noted that the Congressional Budget Office opined that overtime the program will save money. Medicare and not Social Security seemed to be a particular source for concern.

The Student Aid program has become a complete federal program with provisions for debt forgiveness over time. Improvement is expected becauseof removal of the middle-men.

She found along with many members of the House, the Senate to be sometimes obstructionist; but noted at least some significant legislation hadbeen passed and that conservatives and liberals were working together in the House on immigration law changes. She expressed particular concernover the "best and brightest" immigrants having issues in migrating.

Questions from the floor asked about,

1. Nastiness in Washington, D.C. "It is bad, but.."2. "Sunset provisions for entitlement programs: under review.3. The growing deficit: Congress will follow "pay as you go from now on."

Smiles Provided by David Oakes from the Rotary Club of Whistler GOLF: AIN'T IT THE TRUTH Golf balls are like eggs: They're white, they are sold by the dozen, and a week later you have to buy more.

A pro-shop gets its name from the fact that you have to have the income of a professional golfer to buy anything in there. It's amazing how a golfer who never helps out around the house will replace his divots, repair his ball marks, and rake his sand traps. When you stop to think about it, did you ever notice that it's a lot easier to get up at 6:00 a.m. to play golf than at 10:00 to mow the yard? Golf is by far the ultimate love/hate relationship. Sometimes it seems as though your cup runneth and moveth over. It takes longer to learn good golf than it does brain surgery. On the other hand, you seldom get to ride around on a cart, and drink beer eat hotdogs performing brain surgery. A good drive on the 18th hole has stopped many a golfer from giving up the game. Water hazards are no walk in the park for fish, turtles, frogs or gators either. Golf is the perfect thing to do on Sunday because you always end up praying a lot. A good golf partner is one who's always slightly worse than you. If your opponent has trouble remembering whether he shot a six or a seven, he probably shot an eight. You probably wouldn't look good in a Green Jacket anyway! A sweatshirt will do just fine!

J M Cousteau Friday Nite Speaker @ Dist Conference

JEAN-MICHEL COUSTEAUExecutive Vice President, The Cousteau SocietyFounder and President, Ocean Futures Society

Jean-Michel, son of famed ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau, is an environmentalist, educator, and film producer who has spent muchof his life with his family exploring the world's oceans aboard Calypso and Alcyone. Honoring his heritage, Jean-Michel founded OceanFutures Society in 1999 to carry on this pioneering work. He has served as Executive Vice President of The Cousteau Society fornearly 20 years.

Jean-Michel has produced over 80 films, received the Emmy, the Peabody Award, the 7 d'Or, and the Cable Ace Award. In partnership with KQED inSan Francisco, a PBS affiliate, Jean-Michel is Executive Producer of "Jean-Michel Cousteau: Ocean Adventures," a multi-part television serieslaunched in the United States and internationally in 2006 on PBS.

He has served as a spokesman on water issues at the United Nations World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, at the ThirdWorld Water Forum in Kyoto, Japan and at the Dialogues on Water for Life and Security in Barcelona, Spain.

In February 2002, Jean-Michel became the first person to represent the Environment in the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games. He alsoserved on the Board of Directors of the Athens Environmental Foundation for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.

In recognition of his many and diverse contributions to learning, Pepperdine University awarded Jean-Michel an Honorary Doctor's Degree in
