DISCOVERING CHRIST, part of the ChristLife series will be explained at an information night on Wednesday at 7:00 PM in the schoolgymnasium at Immaculate Conception. The parishioners of St. Gregory will join Ss. Peter and Mary and Immaculate Conception toimplement this wonderful program which will be held this year at Immaculate Conception. This program fosters the knowledge andlove of Jesus Christ and shows how it can be applied in our everyday life. Questions like “What is the meaning of life?” and“How do I follow Jesus?” will be explored. Meet with fellow parishioners from our North Rockland Cluster to make this inspiringprogram come alive again. If you have attended any of the ChristLife sessions at SGB and would like to be on our team, please joinus that night. Jesus is calling for us to spread the Good News.

OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD

Iwould like to say a word of support and appreciation toeveryone who has been coming to Mass all summer, whenever it was possible for them, here with us in our

parish or wherever you happened to be. It is important toremember that the Lord commands us to come together onthe day of Jesus’ resurrection so that he can feed us with hisWord and Sacrament. You remember learning in religionclass that Catholics have an obligation to attend Mass onSundays and holy days. This is one of the precepts inspiredby God, explained in The Catechism of the Catholic Church (n.2041. Mrs. Spicer, the principal of the regional schoolreminded the parents at back to school night that God gavehis people a commandment to keep holy the Lord’s Day.Those who really want to be disciples of Jesus mustconsistently follow his own command at the Last Supper, which was, “Do this in memory of me.” So, as each of uschooses priorities for future Sundays, please always put“Mass and macaroni” at the top of your list.

I would also like to say a word of appreciation to ourmany parishioners who have come home after the summerand are bringing their church donations to help with ourexpenses. We really are grateful and need your financialsupport. In a similar way, a second emergency offering willbe collected today for the people of Florida who wereharmed by Hurricane Irma. We are called in solidarity andcompassion to pray for and to assist victims of disasters suchas we have seen in recent weeks.

Finally, as I noted in last week’s bulletin, I have beengiven a special opportunity by Cardinal Dolan to be inOklahoma City this weekend for the beatification of FatherStanley Rother, the parish priest who was assassinated inGuatemala in 1981, the year of my priestly ordination. Thisvery humble, very holy priest is renowned for extraordinarycloseness to Jesus. He suffered greatly. But his authenticholiness has been recognized by our Church. One day, hewill be a saint. I am grateful for your prayers for my safetyas I travel and I remembered your intentions at thebeatification Mass yesterday.

Hoping that nothing important is ever missing fromyour lives – especially Sunday Mass and Holy Communion, daily prayers and acts of kindness, and admiration for thesaints, I remain gratefully yours in Jesus Christ. See you allnext Sunday and at daily Mass during the week.

ROCKLAND COUNTY BLUE MASS willbe celebrated on Sunday, October 1at 12:00 Noon at St. Aedan in PearlRiver. The Blue Mass is an

opportunity for the entire community to show gratitude to ourfirst responders and their families. All responders, active andretired, are asked to wear their dress uniforms or otherapparel identifying their service. This is a special celebrationwhich the Catholic Church offers for those employed in the“public safety field” (i.e. police officers, firefighters, correctional officers, 911 operators and EMS personnel). Thecolor blue refers to the blue-colored uniforms predominantlyused by these services. Similar to the Red Mass (for lawyers)and the White Mass (for those in health care), the servicehonors those who have died in the line of duty and thosecurrently serving as first responders.

ST. JOSEPH’S SEMINARY relies on the generosity of the peopleto educate men to serve as your parish priests. The seminarycollection will be taken next Sunday. Please try to be asgenerous as you can, perhaps giving an amount equal to, notin place of, your regular Sunday donation. The future priestsare grateful for your support and pledge you their continuedprayers. Use the envelope in your packet for this offering.

ALTAR SERVERS WANTED Young people who love Jesus and want to serve Him in our church, and who are in grades4 and 5 are the lucky ones invited to have the privilege and honor of serving Sunday Mass. Saying “yes” takes someserious thought. If you are interested, first speak with your parents and then to Father. Letters of information have beendistributed in class in religious education and the regional school. Orientation meeting is October 4 at 6:30 PM.

FINANCIAL WRONGDOING HOTLINE If you have knowledge of financial misconduct or suspect that it might be occurring, pleasereport your concerns via a toll free hotline at 877-820-0541, or at www.reportlineweb.con/adny. Available 24 hours.

SAINT FRANCIS DAY BLESSING OF ANIMALS You are all invited to bring your pets to the St. Francis Day blessing onFriday afternoon, October 6 at 5:00 PM outside the Church. (We have two weddings scheduled for Saturday, the dayof the traditional blessing). Christians learned from St. Francis about the stewardship of creation and living in peacetogether. On this day, we ask God’s blessings upon the animals in our household.

ARE YOU IN THE HABIT OF LEAVING MASS RIGHT AFTER YOU RECEIVE THE LORD IN HOLY COMMUNION? If you are, your hastydeparture is noticeable as some walk right past the minister distributing the chalice of Precious Blood and out the side door to theparking lot. We know it is better to return to our seats and offer a prayer of thanksgiving to the Eucharistic Lord who has come intoour hearts. Fight the urge to be the first ones out of Mass. Stay with us until the end. Be like Mary, the sister of Martha, and choosethe better part. And please don’t be offended by this notice. It is not directed to anyone personally.

MINISTER TO THE PARISH Consider serving the parish as a lay minister: ALTAR SERVER, CATECHIST, CHOIR MEMBER,EXTRAORDINARY MINISTER OF HOLY COMMUNION, LECTOR, USHER OR GREETER. We need help in each area, at each Mass. Thereis always room for new people to work along side of the veterans. You can do it! None of these requires perfection, just a willingness to help facilitate the celebration of the liturgy. If you have any questions or would be willing to betrained, please speak to Father or call the parish office (947-1873).

THE DAILY MASS GANG It can be a surprise to people who only attend Mass on Sundays to discover how many of their neighborsare at Mass every morning in our church. Why not take advantage of the good weather to join us from Monday through Friday at 7:30at Immaculate Conception or 9:00 Monday through Saturday at SGB? The rewards are unpredictable.

PARISH PRAYER NETWORK is ready to pray from home, quietly at the adoration chapel, or at one of the prayer groupsfor the urgent needs of those who call upon them for help in times of difficulty. When faced with a crisis situation, people need as many prayers as possible. Call Cheryl at 429-4223 or e-mail [email protected]. “If there is somethingthat I can do for another person, then Lord, let me do it now and not defer it; for I shall not pass this way again.”

PRAYERS FOR THE SICK Please notify the parish office in the event of serious illness or hospitalization so we may assist with prayers, the sacraments or a visit. Privacy laws prohibit the hospital from contacting us. We’d also like to know when someone recovers sothat our list is up to date.

MASS WITH THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK This beautiful sacrament is a gift from God that is administered to aCatholic “who, having reached the age of reason, begins to be in danger due to sickness or old age.” It is a sacrament whichprovides comfort, peace and courage. Whenever a new illness develops or a first illness relapses or worsens, theperson may receive the sacrament a further time. It may also be given numerous times in the case of old age or

chronic illness based on the pastoral judgment of the priest. This is not to be confused with what we traditionally refer to as the “lastrites.” Plan on attending this special anointing Mass on Saturday, October 21 at 9:00 AM. “Through this Holy Anointing, may the Lordin His love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit.”

WEEKLY BULLETIN You may already know that this church bulletin is a free service provided to our parish through the courtesy ofour advertisers who are listed on the two back cover pages. So please take a few moments today and every few months to look overthese pages, and notice who is supporting our parish and offering you services you may need. It would be a good and generous thingto do business with these advertisers, and to mention our church and thank them for their ad in the bulletin. They appreciate it andfeel their good deed is having an effect.
