From Pastor John The Staff & Crook Good Shepherd Lutheran Church March 2016 Issue Number 137 Alive in Christ: Disciples Making Disciples through Study, Prayer and Action. Alive in Christ: Disciples Making Disciples through Study, Prayer and Action. Alive in Christ: Disciples Making Disciples through Study, Prayer and Action. Alive in Christ: Disciples Making Disciples through Study, Prayer and Action. March, 2016 Easter is almost as early as it can be this year. The date of Easter is actually an astronomical calculation: the first Sunday after the first full moon after the first day of spring (the equinox). Got that? Good—now you’ll always be able to figure out when Easter is. Actually, it took the early Christians a long time to agree on a date for Easter. Many thought that it should coincide with Passover, since the events of the first Easter took place at Passover time in Jerusalem—the time of the full moon, by the way. I like to remember all this as we approach Easter because it roots our celebration in the cosmos itself, which reminds me of the world-changing and life-changing nature of the Resurrection. Our faith is based on the proclama- tion of the Gospel: that Jesus died for sinful humanity, and that God raised him from the dead. In other words, one of the greatest cosmic forces of all—death—is called into question by what God has done in Jesus Christ. Dare we believe that? And I don’t mean “dare we believe that someone could be raised from the dead.” That’s an intellectual question: can I believe the proposition that God has raised Jesus from the dead? I’d rather ask the question in a way that uses another sense of the word “believe,” “to give your heart to, to hold dear, to trust.” And I’d ask it this way: Can I give my heart to what God has done, is doing, and will do in the world in the Resurrection of Jesus? I think that’s a more challenging question. This question asks me to think about death, my own fear of death, and all the anxieties and behaviors in my life that are finally based on the power that death has over me. What happens if my idea of death and God’s idea of death are not the same? How does my life change day by day if I “take to heart” what God speaks to me in raising Jesus from the dead: that there is no need to fear death anymore? Now the question becomes, not “in my opinion, did God raise Jesus from the dead?” but, “Do I dare to live my life not fearing death?” Jesus himself showed us what such a life would look like by his own example. And Jesus invites us to follow him in living such a life by calling us to be his disciples. All the power that death has over us to hinder us from the life God calls us to live has been broken once and for all: the sins of our past are forgiven, today we live with the risen Christ, and we face tomorrow with confidence and hope. Every year, as the earth and the moon and the sun come into the configuration that tells us that it is time to celebrate Easter again, the Gospel proclaims that God has created a new cosmic reality, and by God’s grace and love, God invites every human being to live in it. Alleluia!

March, 2016

Easter is almost as early as it can be this year. Our faith is based on the proclama-tion of the Gospel: that Jesus died for sinful humanity, and that God raised him from the dead.

Alleluia!

From the Council President by Richard Kopp The Church Council spent a considerable part of our February Council meeting discussing new ways to reach into the community around us. Questions raised at the annual meeting of the congre-gation concerning the small class size of our Sunday school did not fall on deaf ears; this is a concern we all share. The immedi-ate impact of small class sizes is felt not only by the children, par-ents, and teachers, but by the entire congregation. The Council feels that we can best address the question of small Sunday school class size by trying to reach into the community even more than we already do. We discussed ideas including starting a reli-gious education class outside our church walls, and starting a dis-cussion group at a local public space. We are exploring these ide-as further. The goal of both of these efforts is to spread the Word of God to those in our community who have not heard it, and to build new relationships.

“Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be

given to me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the

gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may

declare it fearlessly, as I should.” (Ephesians 6:19-20).

In another effort to reach out to those who do not regularly attend

Good Shepherd, Charlotte Santella is going to make video record-

ings of Pastor’s sermons and post them on the Good Shepherd

Facebook page. If people cannot make it to church on Sunday,

they will have the opportunity to watch the sermon wherever they

might be. Please let your adult children living outside Syracuse

know about this new opportunity to stay connected with Good

Shepherd, especially college students who may make church a low

priority. One never knows who might come across our Facebook

page, see one of Pastor’s sermons, and be drawn to come visit us.

Please remember the Good Shepherd Growing capital campaign

when you prepare your gifts for the church. Kent and Bethany re-

minded us at the annual meeting that the Fellowship Hall roof is

PAST its life expectancy, and the other projects to be funded by

that campaign would add to the functionality of the church

grounds, so it is very important that we reach our goal of

$150,000 as soon as possible.

On behalf of the Council, I wish you a joyous Easter.

Yours in Christ, Richard Kopp

2

In January, 2015 a funding goal of $150,000 with a 3 year duration

was established by Council to cover the expenses of future building

& maintenance projects at Good Shepherd.

Projects to be covered would be: New Roof

for the Fellowship Hall Outdoor Pavilion

for fellowship & worship New Glass Doors

at front entrance with power assistance Sanctuary & Narthex

Improvements Our balance as of 12/31/2015 is only $18,000 so we have a ways to go.

Please help us “Grow Good Shepherd”! Campaign donations by check should have Growing Good Shepherd on the

Marilyn “Butch” Walters February 14, 1923—January 31, 2016

Good Shepherd mourns the loss of our beloved Marilyn "Butch" Walters who peacefully passed away at her home under the care of Hospice and surrounded by her family on Sunday, January 31. Butch possessed an artist's gift of being able to create with her hands what she saw in her mind. Her gifts included calligraphy, weaving, knitting, baking special birthday cakes, sewing elaborate costumes and ceramics. She was a long-time active member at Good Shepherd, singing in the choir, playing bells in the bell choir, serving on the altar guild, many committees and the church council. She also volunteered for FISH for over 40 years. She was a 1945 graduate of SUNY Geneseo in elementary education and taught in public and private schools for over 30 years. She is survived by her three children; Timothy (Carol Sasson) Guhl, Meralee (Mark Reitman) Guhl and Heidi Tsadilas as well as several grandchildren, nieces and nephews; her beloved dog, Patches and by her extended church family at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Butch was predeceased by her husband, Reverend Howard F. Guhl, who conferred the name Butch on her when they met, and by her 2nd husband Fred-erick (Bud) Walters. Butch walked humbly in the service of God and others all of her life. She is loved and remembered by those whose lives she touched. A celebration of Butch's life with balloons and all, was held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at 2 p.m. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, PO Box 236, Fayetteville, NY 13066. We at Good Shepherd will continue to keep Butch’s family and friends in our thoughts and

prayers.

All are invited to join us in the Lounge on Sunday mornings (9:45 - 10:45 am) for our between-services gathering for reflection, faith exploration, learning and fellowship.

On March 6, we continue our DVD discussion series by Bart Ehrman. Don Mills and Kent Hustad will facilitate our discussion of The diversity of early Christian communities and beliefs. Adult Forum joins with the Worship & Music Committee to focus on Traditions of Holy Week on Feb. 28 & March 13. Pastor John Ferrie will join members of Worship & Music in helping us to understand why we do what we do during this most holy of seasons. Join us to find out what Maundy Thurs-day and Good Friday are all about, why we observe them, and the traditions surrounding these Holy Week days. There will be no Forum on March 20 as the congregation enjoys the annual Palm Sunday Brunch, and on March 27, Easter Sunday. Please mark your calendars for a special adult forum, Living in an Interfaith World, on Sunday April 3rd! Good Shepherd is extremely fortunate to welcome a panel of religious lead-ers from our community to discuss interfaith relationships and fellowship. The panel will be led by Rev. Jim Kerr-Whitt, a retired American Baptist minister with 40 years of pastoral experience. Accompanying him will be Mohamed Khater, head of the Islamic Society of Central New York, who

serves with Rev. Kerr-Whitt on the Interfaith Works Round Ta-ble of Faith Leaders. Also joining the group is Jim Brule of Temple Concord (Reform Jewish) who is a trained Jew-ish story teller and a spiritual leader. He traveled to Israel with Rev. Kerr-Whitt last year as part of an interfaith excursion there, where they were privileged to converse with Muslim, Christian, and Jewish leaders. This will be an exciting multigenerational event with Forum, GSY & the GSLC confirmation class! We hope you will come to extend a welcome to our guests and to participate in this unique fellowship and spiritual learning opportunity.

Come listen, learn, pray, reflect, discuss, support — we welcome your presence and participation! Your thoughts and ideas are always welcome — contact Erin Houghton via email ([email protected]) or Sandy Tars at ([email protected]) with ideas for topics, speakers and formats, or Don Mills at ([email protected]) for Bible Study.

Worship & Music Committee by Jane Ondich

The Worship & Music committee has organized many opportu-nities for worship during the season of Lent. In addition to Sunday worship services, there are Wednesday Holden Even-ing Prayer services, the Maundy Thursday service, the Good Friday Honoring the Cross service, the Good Friday Tenebrae service, and the Easter Sunday worship services. During Adult Forum, Pastor Ferrie will lead discussion on the Traditions of Holy Week, particularly Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. We hope these many Lenten activities will give you an oppor-tunity to reflect on the season of Lent.

Good Shepherd’s 50th Anniversary banner has been taken down from the sanctuary wall and moved to the fellowship hall. Worship & Music, working with a group of Good Shepherd members, will make a recommendation to Council concerning what to put on the sanctuary’s blank wall.

Following up on comments from the January 31 annual meet-

ing, Worship & Music will be researching and discussing the possibilities of a contemporary music service and additional weekday worship services.

As always, Worship & Music is interested in your comments about worship at Good Shepherd. Contact any member (Phoebe Askeland, Pastor Ferrie, Becki Harris, Lois Koenig, Don Mills, Jane Ondich, Lynn Reed, Barbara Rymarchyk, Ar-vo Tars) with your input.

You are all invited to attend any Worship & Music meetings. W&M meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm.

Following the 11:00 wor-ship service, you have the option of taking one or both of the bou-quets home or letting the office know that the flowers can be giv-en to someone whose day needs

brightening.

Thank you for brightening the Thank you for brightening the Thank you for brightening the Thank you for brightening the

What is Holy Week about? Why do Lutherans observe Maundy Thursday and Good Friday? What is the Biblical significance of these days? What traditions have we established here at Good Shepherd for these days? What traditions did you grow up having for Holy Week? Come and be part of the discussion as Pastor Ferrie leads us in discussing Traditions of Holy Week.

Good Shepherd’s Book Club will meet again on

Another Good Shepherd Another Good Shepherd Another Good Shepherd Another Good Shepherd

In the mid-nineteenth century, a young man named Claude Monet decided that he would rather endure a difficult life painting landscapes than take over his father’s nautical supplies business in a French seaside town. Against his father’s will, and with nothing but a dream and an insatiable urge to create a new style of art that repudiated the Classical Realism of the time, he set off for Paris. But once there he is confronted with obstacles: an art world that refused to validate his style, extreme poverty, and a war that led him away from his home and friends. But there were bright spots as well: his deep, enduring friendships with men named Renoir, Cé-zanne, Pissarro, Manet – a group that together would come to be known as the Impressionists, and that supported each other through the difficult years. But even more illuminating was his lifelong love, Camille Doncieux, a beautiful, upper-class Parisian girl who threw away her privileged life to be by the side of the defiant paint-er and embrace the lively Bohemian life of their time. Claude and Camille is a vividly-rendered portrait of both the rise of Impressionism and of the artist at the center of

the movement, and above all is a love story of the highest romantic order.

All are welcome!
