The Roanoke Skier and Adventurer The Monthly Newsletter for the Roanoke Ski and Adventure Club 1 DECEMBER 2018 President’s Message Happy Holidays Roanoke Ski and Adventure Club! I am very excited to officially share with everyone our updated name. It was a very resounding YES vote at the November membership meeting to incorporate Adventure in the Club’s legal name. Our Club is very successful, contrary to the downward trend for similar organizations, and to our credit, we are actively growing each year. This season we have approximately 147 members on ski trips, and 122 members on non-ski trips. With a membership total of 333, that’s remarkable! The addition of Adventure to the Club’s name acknowledges our enormously successful trips to exotic travel destinations. Look for our new updated logo the first of the year. In the spirit of the season, please remember to make your donation to the Club’s 2018-2019 Operation Warm Campaign. We hope to raise enough money to donate 200 brand new warm winter coats to the more than 400 homeless Roanoke City Public School children. Our gift of a brand-new winter coat empowers children by sparking confidence and self-pride in a way that second-hand clothing cannot. A new warm coat offers physical and emotional warmth, confidence to socialize and succeed, and hope of a brighter future. Please know that 95¢ of every $1 donated, goes directly to our coat purchase program. I wish all of you a happy, healthy holiday and a season full of love and laughter. Marla Kemsey, President

DECEMBER 2018

President’s Message

Happy Holidays Roanoke Ski and Adventure Club!

Marla Kemsey,

President

Visit a Master Boot Fitter and Ski Better!

(and get 10% off at our new retail partner!)

So, what do skiers do when it’s 90 degrees outside and a holiday? On Labor Day, Melinda and I took a

3½-hour trip to Northern Virginia, where we had an appointment with a master boot fitter to buy new ski

boots! Our boots were almost 10 years old, so we abandoned them at Alpe d’Huez in March.

One of our tour operators recommended Brian Deely, who owns Pro-Fit Ski in Leesburg, VA. Pro-Fit has

been a Certified Member of America’s Best Boot Fitters for over 15 years. We figured that for an

investment in comfortable ski boots that fit right and will last 10+ years, it would be worth the drive. We

were right! Brian spent over 3 1/2 hours with us to make sure we walked out with great-fitting boots that

he recommended given our skiing level and aggressiveness, foot size, stance, comfort preference, and

other factors. Brian’s shop has high-tech equipment to ensure a proper fit that most ski boot retailers

don’t have.

The visit was well worth it, and we both ended up with incredible-fitting boots. Melinda’s even have built-

in heaters.

After having gone through this experience, it’s hard to fathom how anyone buys a ski boot - possibly the

most important piece of equipment - without going to see someone who knows how to make the boot

work for you!

Pro-Fit will give 10% off to Roanoke Ski Club members. Check out their website at https://pro-fitski.com/

and the next time you are in the market for boots be sure to make an appointment with Brian!
