Enjoy Dinner and a Movie Night in the Fellowship Hall on Friday, June 17th. A catered dinner from Dickey’s Barbeque will be served fol-lowed by a showing of War Room. The film received great re-views. Find the trailer at: http://www.traileraddict.com/war-room/trailer. The final deadline for purchasing tickets for the meal is Tuesday, June 14th. Cost for dinner is $5.00/person with a family limit of $25.00. Children five years old and under eat free. The movie is free. There will be an age appropriate movie shown for kids ages 4 thru 12. It will be necessary to make a reservation for your child by calling the office 972-423-3260. We will need an accurate count so we can provide appropriate supervision.

This isn’t a popular statement to make but here goes anyway: “America is no longer the greatest nation in the world.” It used to be that we led in almost every category you could think of but not anymore. In the last 50 years, we have fallen to 7th in literacy, 27th in

math, 22nd in science, 49th in life expectancy, 178th in infant mortality, 3rd in median household income, 4th in exports….Well, I guess you get the picture. We do still lead in some things: television watching (28 hours/week); most expensive place to have a ba-by ($10,000/child); obesity; anxiety disorders, civil-ian firearms (beating out Yemen, Serbia, and Iraq—we now have more guns than people); incarceration rate (beating out Russia, China, Cuba and Iran); high-est health expenditures; and highest cocaine rates. One of the great moments in recent history occurred when Malcolm Muggeridge resigned as the rector of the University of Edinburgh in January of 1958. He resigned because he would not be a party to the relax-ation of rules which permitted students to buy and sell marijuana on campus. Facing a booing, hostile crowd, Muggeridge addressed the students, saying:

“The students of this university are the benefi-ciaries of centuries of selfless scholarship. You are supposed to spearhead progress and carry on the torch of humanity…. But how infinitely sad…that the form of your rebellion should be a demand for drugs, for the most tenth-rate sort of self-indulgence ever known in history. All is prepared for a release of new life. We await great works of art, the spirit of adventure and courage, and what do we get from you? Self-centered folly. You are on a crazy, downward slope…. For myself, I always come back to the King, to Jesus, to the Christian notion that all our ef-forts to make ourselves happy fail, but that sac-rifice for others will never fail…. As far as I am concerned, it is Christ or noth-ing. Goodbye and God bless you.”

With that, Muggeridge walked out of the university never to return. When we embrace the call of Christ,

we embrace the promise of a new and better society. But it is only possible if each one of us does our part to “seek ye first the kingdom of God.”

See you Sunday,
