S C E N E : Square in a Spanish C i t y . D o l o r e s , a y o u n g peasant g i r l , is in love w i t h a popular matador . She forces her father to play the guitar

w h i l e she parades her c h a r m s in preparation for the moment the matador s h a l l arrive from the nearby b u l l r i n g . C o m p l i c a t i o n s develop w h e n M a r c a r e n a , a sophisticated lady of the boulevards, appears in pursuit of the matador .

S T O R Y O F S C E N E I — A s guests assemble for the skat ing c a r n i v a l , a l l of the young men and the aged general become infatuated w i t h the skat ing star. T h e mother makes it p l a i n that she has ambitions for her daughter and makes every effort to encourage the general . B u t it soon becomes clear that the young lady has other ideas; she is apparently attracted to the young A l p i n e officer.
