Course IntroductionMicrocellular injection molding (also known as patented commercial process MuCell ®) is a processin which supercritical fluid (SCF) (N2 or CO2) is injected into the machine barrel. Then SCF andmolten polymer are mixed during the plasticizing and become a uniform single-phase fluid.Microcellular foams appear from the mixture of SCF and polymer melt during the injection phase asthe instability of thermodynamic states caused by sudden pressure drop. Molten polymerscontaining cells are shaped in the mold cavities and the desired molded products with micro scalecells are obtained. This process is without the packing stage in the regular injection moldingprocess so that the cycle time is reduced. In addition, foaming process improves the dimensionalstability and reduces the shrinkage and warpage problem on the molded part. Other benefits fromthis process include environmental friendliness, material /energy saving, lightweight and recyclableplastic products and so on.

He was a research assistant of The Center of Excellence in Polymer Science and Engineeringat IIT. He has worked in the area of polymer rheology for many years, and is working onpolymer processing simulation for optical products and novel manufacturing technology, suchas micro injection molding and microcellular injection molding.
