Just a year ago, May was my first edition as Publisher of Chandler Lifestyle. I had recently moved from the Midwest, retired and felt

totally disconnected with my community. I could have never imag-ined the wonderful journey I was about to begin when I decided to join Lifestyle Publications!

This month is bittersweet for me as we say goodbye to our fabulous Editor, Danielle Accovelli, so that she can move on to the next chapter of her life. I cannot thank her enough for her spirit, professionalism, creativity and desire to bring you the absolutely best magazine in Chandler—or the East Valley, for that matter! She has truly taken our publication to the next level.

But now for the sweet part: I am so excited to have Mindy Haskins joining our team as our new Editor. Mindy has great experience, great ideas and great enthusiasm so I can’t wait to see what she has in store for our readers. Stay tuned for our June edition, where you will get to meet her for the very first time.

There are many things I have learned about Chandler in this past year. One is that this community is absolutely full of amazing women! May is always our focus on the ladies, so what better way than to recognize 14 of the Real Women of Chandler! I think you will agree each of them has their own way of being a true example for our own inspirations.

Happy reading, and I look forward to seeing you around town!

ANIMAL MED CENTER OFFERS ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture has been used for centuries to treat a wide range of conditions in humans, and it is becoming more common in veteri-nary hospitals. This form of holistic medicine originated in China and involves placing very slim, sterile needles into specific points of the body to create a healing response. Medical-based acupuncture can be used alone or in conjunction with other treatment modalities, such as laser therapy and medications, to increase its positive results. Dogs and cats of all ages and health conditions can ben-efit from it. Some typical conditions include spinal cord injury, arthritis, post-surgical pain, digestive disorders, skin conditions

MOTHER’S DAY FUN FACTSMother's Day originated in the United

States in the early 1900s and is celebrated on the second Sunday of May in the U.S. and Canada,  but celebrated in March in many other countries. On record, the youngest mom to ever deliver a baby was a 5 year old in Peru; the oldest was a 65-year-old woman in India. The average age of a mom in the U.S. is 26. Americans plan to spend an average of $58, or $14 billion total, on Mother’s Day gifts this year. The most popular gifts for mom are flow-ers (48 percent), dinner in a restaurant (43 percent), gift cards (41 percent), jewelry (28 percent) and beauty products (27 percent). Of all the flowers bought for holidays, one quarter are purchased for Mother's Day. 122 million phone calls to moms will be made this year and 133 million greeting cards will be given.

T he staff at Cielo Aesthetics & Wellness are master injectors and national educators, bringing more than 60 combined years of nursing experience—nearly half of which has been focused on

aesthetic medicine. From wrinkle relaxers to dermal fillers, including a full line of custom services for men, they offer a variety of treatments that can improve the appearance of facial lines, leading to a more youthful appearance. With aesthetic treatments, Cielo can often prevent the need for more invasive procedures, such as a facelift, for many years.

“Today’s young men and women have the advantage of beginning treatment with Botox and fillers much earlier, and never intend to have their first wrinkle,” says owner Kyle Graber.

Opening the original Cielo Skin & Body Center in Fountain Hills in 2001, Graber sold it in 2009 when she was recruited to train other physicians and nurses in the art and science of aesthetic injections. After spending eight years as a national educator, where she devel-oped a passion for teaching, Graber was drawn to return to the clinic setting and treatment of clients. Late in 2015 she opened the doors to Cielo Aesthetics & Wellness, but this time in the East Valley.

“With the Chandler and Gilbert area growing so quickly, we were excited to bring our services to a community that just doesn’t have quite as

many options as the Scottsdale area,” Graber says. “We found this location on the water, which is peaceful and beautiful, and we couldn’t be happier.”

As industry leaders who train many practitioners in the Valley, Cielo also educates its clients and help them discover the most natu-ral enhancements and, in turn, clients can be confident that they are being provided with the best services available.

“There are a lot of fads out there, and they may not always be the best thing,” Graber says. “We do a lot of education with our clients so they fully understand their options and the risks and benefits to achieve the desired aesthetic outcome. Together we’ll form a treatment plan that works within their time frame, comfort level and budget.”

Cielo has also developed their own line of skin care products. Made from clinically proven, pharmaceutical-grade ingredients which never contain parabens or other harmful toxins, their products are not only free of artificial colors, fragrances and synthetic chemical preservatives, but they are all cruelty-free and manufactured here in the United States.

Aside from aesthetics, the Wellness Center at Cielo offers services founded on the principals of Functional Medicine, based in addressing the underlying causes of diseases, especially those associated with

YELLOW

When I mention yellow to people, they usually cringe and say, "Oh, I don't look good in yellow." Yellow can be a scary color to wear, but this bright summer color is a must! There are so many shades of yellow—from bright lemon to muted mustard—and so many ways to wear it. If you're new to this color, start with a pop of your favorite yellow in your accessories. Some yellow jewelry or a yellow handbag is a fabulous way to start rocking this trend. Work your way up to a yellow top or shorts. You can treat yellow as a neutral color, pairing it with blues, reds or whites. Get adventurous! This beautiful color symbolizes happi-

ness, energy and vitality. Try wearing it when you need a boost.

MIXED PRINTS

Mixing prints can be a tricky trend to pull off but trust me, anyone can do it! If you're unsure, start simple by mixing stripes and floral. Then graduate to adding animal prints with shoes or a handbag. For summer, you'll want to keep your layers light, so try throwing on a

floral kimono over your outfit for starters.

SHOULDER SHOW-OFF

Try this trend with more structured bottoms for a balanced look, or keep things boho and flowy by pairing them with palazzo pants. This extra touch of feminine chic is sure to keep you feeling light and airy wherever your travels take you. Throw on a chunky, eye-catching necklace and show off

those sun-kissed shoulders with cut-out or off-the-shoulder tops.

Trend Setter (CONTINUED)

This beautiful trend is everywhere lately and I can't get enough! There are so many ways to wear floral embroidery items, and there's a style for everyone. If this feminine trend seems a bit too outdated for you, start small with a simple cluster of flowers on a shirt, dress or pair of denim jeans. Most retailers have this style available in some

form, so stop by your favorite shop and try it out!

SUNDRESSES

Soft, flowing, floral dresses are taking the runways by storm this summer. This ultra-feminine look has us all swooning! Pair your sun-dress with wedge sandals or mules, and as you're traipsing through the streets of Chandler or sailing down the Riviera, you'll be turning

heads wherever you go.

TERRI KIMBLE – COMMUNITYPRESIDENT/CEO, CHANDLER CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Terri Kimble has worked in the Chamber of Commerce indus-try for 26 years and since joining the Chandler Chamber six years ago, she has helped to double its size. She has found a passion as a dedicated advocate for business growth and development in the East Valley. Her strengths include listening to ideas from all sources, creating alliances and bringing people together for the common good.

In addition to her efforts with the chamber, Kimble has sat on over 16 boards in Arizona, serves on the Woman’s Council at her church in Chandler and volunteers countless hours to many organizations, including the Phoenix Dream Center, CUSD and the Exchange Club of Chandler. She and her husband, George, pack and deliver meals for the homeless and even have coined a phrase, "Make a Difference Monday," to encourage their friends and acquaintances to help people in need.

“The most rewarding part of my job is simply helping busi-nesses,” Kimble says. “We have business retention and expansion visits that we host with the city. We make visits to Chandler com-panies, thanking them for doing business here and asking what can we do to assist them in growing or expanding. These visits are amazing and it is very rewarding to make a positive impact in identifying their needs and making the connections to grow. Whether it is our Business Mentoring Programs, Leadership Institute, Community Awards or the Ostrich Festival, Chandler is a diverse place to do business.”WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR THOSE THINKING OF GETTING

INVOLVED IN THEIR COMMUNITY OR GIVING BACK?

Just do it! The rewards are far bigger than you’ll ever imagine. There are so many great causes and ways to contribute to the community. Go to the Chandler Chamber website, click on the “Chamber for Good” button and start making a difference!DESCRIBE THE CHANDLER COMMUNITY IN THREE WORDS.

WOMEN OF CHANDLER (CONTINUED)

When planning our May Women’s issue, I wanted to find a way to focus on some of the wonderful

ladies of Chandler. So many are impressive, inspiring, innovative, creative, selfless, determined ... I could go on forever! Let’s just say, I knew I would have a lot of material to work with so the idea for a feature on the Real Women of Chandler was off and running!

We started by seeking nominations through the magazine, social media and word-of-mouth. The nom-inating criteria were intentionally loose because we were looking for women from a broad cross-section of our community. We were absolutely overwhelmed when over 100 wonderful women of Chandler were nominated! Children, husbands, boyfriends, friends, city officials, bosses, co-workers, neighbors, silent admirers—nominations came in from everywhere!

As the Publisher, I quickly realized I needed to remove myself from the selection process so an Editorial Selection Committee was created. Nine categories were created: Community, Charity, Philanthropy, Animal Advocacy, Public Service, Educator, First Responder, Public Service, Inspiring Moms and Local Business Giving Back. All nominees were asked to complete a questionnaire and the committee did their due diligence on reviewing the submissions and researching all of the semi-finalists. I can assure you the selection process was no easy task and there was much debate and consternation.

As it turns out, we could not be more proud to intro-duce you to 14 incredible women who contribute to our great community in so many different ways—and it’s easy to notice a common thread in their advice to our readers. Find a cause dear to your heart, jump in, give what you can and just do it! The rewards are endless.

I hope you find these women as inspiring as I do!

DEBBIE GRAMMER AND NIOMEE BAKER – COMMUNIT Y

FOUNDER/ADMINS, OCOTILLO FRIENDS

Today, Chandler has many choices when it comes to social media plat-

forms that help the community stay informed and connected but back

in March 2013, Debbie Grammer started the first when she launched a

Facebook group called Ocotillo Friends (OF).

“We started out wanting a way for friends and neighbors to stay con-

nected but very quickly we had a huge following and it just seemed to grow

overnight,” she says. “We knew we were truly filling a need. I knew I needed

help and Niomee Baker was the perfect fit!”

With almost 18,000 members, OF is an innovative Facebook group

specifically for Chandler residents and businesses.

“We have grown organically through word-of-mouth and referrals,” says

Grammer and Baker. “We only want members who truly want to be part of

our community. It has always been our goal to bring together residents and

businesses of Chandler so they can work together to promote, protect and

strengthen the local neighborhoods and economy.”

“Whether you are new to Chandler or have lived here your whole life,

OF helps Chandler maintain that small-town feel,” Baker says.

The group now has its own website, an OF Buy/Sell Facebook page

and a local business directory.

“The business directory is a great source of information for those

seeking reputable local referrals. It helps businesses succeed by allowing

them to advertise, sponsor giveaways and enjoy the benefits of happy

customers who refer them,” they say.

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF BEING ABLE TO GIVE BACK?

Being able to organize, sponsor and support our OF community so we can help

organizations and neighbors who really need some help. If someone comes to

us with a need, we work hard to come up with a solution. Once we let the OF

members know, they are on it! It really is rewarding to help everything come

together and it is why we organized a 501(c)(3) for charitable giving.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR THOSE THINKING OF GETTING INVOLVED

IN GIVING BACK?

If you act out of genuine desire to do things for the right reason and don’t

allow those acts to become self-serving, the rewards are endless.

CARYN SHOEMAKER – CHARITYFOUNDER OF ONE SMALL STEP AND CLOTHES CABIN

Years ago, Caryn Shoemaker was inspired by a child in an orange grove who needed a pair of socks. Her church was giving clothing to migrant workers and their families when she saw a barefoot child hugging his mom’s leg while putting one foot on top of the other, trying to keep warm.

“I knew we had some socks on the table at home, so I got a pair and went looking for that boy. I knelt down to pull the socks over his feet but they were men's socks that came up to his thighs. He just laughed!” says Shoemaker.

Quickly realizing how simple it is to make someone's life better, she founded One Small Step in 2001. During the next eight years, OSS gave away 160,000 pairs of socks to local agencies. In 2008, they expanded by creating the Clothes Cabin, which takes in dona-tions and keeps what is usable within the Chandler community. Clients get to “shop” in a clean, well-organized store and everyone is treated with a high level of respect. Clothes Cabin now helps nearly 2,000 local families annually.

“More than half of the clients are children, trapped in poverty and dependent upon us to give them new and like-new clothing and shoes,” Shoemaker says.

Clothes Cabin also provides free laundry services, storage lockers and mailboxes for its homeless clients.

“We are particularly proud to help men in the community get new, steel-toed work boots so they can get a job,” says Shoemaker.WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR THOSE THINKING OF GETTING

INVOLVED IN THEIR COMMUNITY OR GIVING BACK?

LISA CVIJANOVICH – PHILANTHROPISTOWNER, PORSCHE CHANDLER, SUBARU SUPERSTORE CHANDLER/

SURPRISE, VOLVO CARS TEMPE, AUTOBAHN COLLISION

Lisa Cvijanovich’s story begins like most great adventures; with one small step. Years ago, she mentored a young girl through Big Brothers/Big Sisters and learned she could make a difference working one-on-one with children. She carried this experience with her and remembered it when she had her own son.

“The most personal impact I’ve made was simply working hard every day as a volunteer with CUSD while our son was in elementary school,” she says. “It was an awesome time to team up with other committed, hard-working parents while supporting our teachers and students.”

One small step turned into many, and now her impact can be felt throughout the community. Teaming up with Subaru, Lisa and her husband, Richard, have contributed more than $250,000 to organiza-tions serving children, such as the Chandler Education Foundation, the Chandler Unified School District and Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation. Their dealerships also participate in charitable giving through the Subaru Love Promise program.

Cvijanovich especially enjoys supporting the foster teens interested in automotive careers by employing them through the AFFCF’s Keys To Success program, which assists teens to success-fully transition from the foster care system to independent living.

“Helping kids find their joy and passion is the best part of giving back. I’m motivated by the potential I see in children and believe it’s important we support them and expose them to opportunity so that they can succeed,” she says.HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK, COMMUNITY AND A PERSONAL LIFE?

I find balance by including friends and family in the charity work I do, so I can enjoy their company while paying it forward. I also hope to inspire our son to contribute, too.WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE OR SAYING?

TRINITY DONOVAN – CHARITYCEO CHANDLER CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY CENTER/

FORMER CHANDLER CITY COUNCIL

A Chandler resident since age 8, Trinity Donovan built her life through

service and is motivated to continue making the community a better place

for future generations. It was her community of friends, family and church

who instilled the importance of serving others. Her life of giving began

as a child when she served food at St. Vincent de Paul. As a teen, she

served meals weekly to migrant workers. As an adult, she served for eight

years on the Chandler City Council, as well as many various boards and

committees throughout the Valley.

Perhaps her biggest act of service is as the CEO of Chandler

Christian Community Center (CCCC). The organization assisted over

17,000 individuals last year and just celebrated its 50th anniversary.

When Donovan started with CCCC in 2009, the food bank had three

employees and 200 volunteers. Today, it’s a multiservice organization

offering food boxes, senior meals, emergency assistance and family

learning. They now have 35 employees and more than 1,000 volunteers. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO CONTINUE THIS WORK?

I’m motivated by the amazing people in our community who come

together to have a greater impact than anyone could have alone. Also by

the CCCC volunteers who served more than 34,000 hours last year to

help others. I’m motivated by the people I meet at CCCC who overcome

extraordinary circumstances to move from crisis to stability.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK, COMMUNITY AND A PERSONAL LIFE?

I’m able to balance my work, community projects and family because

I enjoy what I do. I have a great support system through my faith, hus-

band and parents who help me balance all the important activities.

WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING OR FRUSTRATING PART OF WHAT

YOU ARE TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH?

We see so much need and there is more to do. While the economy has

improved, those hit hardest haven’t seen the same improvements.

DESCRIBE THE CHANDLER COMMUNITY IN THREE WORDS.

SHANNON POWELL – LOCAL BUSINESS GIVING BACKFOUNDER/DIRECTOR OF TOTSPOT PRESCHOOL

With a degree in education, Shannon Powell started her preschool

out of her home in 2008 when she couldn’t find a school for her daugh-

ter that met her qualifications. That was nine years ago and the school

continues to grow at its two locations. Powell is passionate about early

child development and teaching her students a love for learning.

This mother of five has two children with special needs and she

supports and finds the causes of the Juvenile Diabetes Research

Foundation and Power Paws (emotional support dogs for children

with special needs) close to her heart. Powell is also a Court Appointed

Special Advocate (CASA) for small children in Arizona’s foster care sys-

tem. With over 18,000 foster children in the state, she hopes to bring

more awareness to Arizona’s desperate need for more CASA volunteers.

As founder of TotSpot Preschool, Powell utilizes her preschool commu-

nity to help give back to the larger community they reside in. The preschool

has raised money for many causes, including scholarships for families

who financially wouldn’t be able to enroll their child, help with expenses for

one of their teachers who was undergoing cancer treatments and making

donations to the local Children’s Crisis Center.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK, COMMUNITY AND YOUR PERSONAL LIFE?

I am deliberate in making sure all aspects of my life are balanced. I

surround myself with great administrators and generous, hard-work-

ing parents who volunteer to help with the school and its activities.

Not to mention my supportive husband, Jeremy, who especially helps

with our five children!

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THOSE THINKING OF GETTING

INVOLVED IN THE COMMUNITY?

Not to wait to get started. Nothing is more rewarding than helping

someone. If you are going through a tough time, put it aside and go

help someone else. Discover the peace and joy of serving.

LISA SHORE – EDUCATORPRINCIPAL, FRYE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, CUSD

An educator since 2000, Shore has always felt led to teach. As a teacher, dean and now, as principal at a Title 1 school in the Chandler Unified School District (CUSD), Shore and her team work tirelessly to meet not only their students’ academic needs but basic needs as well, including clothing, food and furniture.

“I feel it is my role to educate the whole child,” she says. “Many of our students come to us each day worried about their next meal, clean clothes and if they will have a house to go to after school. When basic needs are not met, it makes learning difficult. I love working at our school because I get to be a part of a team that works to make the school day a safe place where students know they are cared for and learning happens.”

Shore has also been involved in the Chandler Chamber Leadership Institute as a part of Class 33, where their project was to remodel the ultrasound room at the Pregnancy Care Center. She has also contributed her time and talents to the community through ICAN, Si Se Puede and Chandler CARE Center.WHAT INITIALLY INSPIRED YOU TO TAKE UP YOUR OCCUPATION?

I had many influential teachers growing up and always looked up to them. Teaching has been my calling since I was a little girl and there was never a doubt that this would be my path.HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK, COMMUNITY AND A PERSONAL LIFE?

It’s not easy and I definitely don’t do it alone. My extremely supportive husband, Mike, and my kids love what I do and we divide and conquer when we can, juggling the kids’ sports, school events and social calendars. My family is blessed with a strong village—supportive friends, family and neighbors. “Team Shore” volunteers in the community and supports organizations that work to make Chandler a better place for everyone.—MTE

TINA BALSEWICZ – FIRST RESPONDERPOLICE OFFICER AND MEMBER OF THE CRIME PREVENTION UNIT,

CITY OF CHANDLER

Tina Balsewicz is an Army veteran who has been a police officer for 18 years, primarily because of an officer in her Pennsylvania hometown who convinced her she could make a difference in ending the cycle of domestic violence that she was witnessing. That was in third grade and her mind was made up.

Through her work as a Chandler police officer and a member of the department’s Crime Prevention Unit, Balsewicz is com-mitted to helping others by making the community as safe as possible—not because she is looking for praise, but because she sees it as the right thing to do.

Whether she is spending time as a board member for the Chandler Cop ‘N Kids literacy program, serving as an Army reservist or fostering a four-legged friend for Desert Labrador Retriever Rescue, Balsewicz truly enjoys making a positive differ-ence and creating smiles.

The list of this officer’s accomplishments, accolades, awards and memberships are too long to mention here, but she promises that she is never bored! Balsewicz remains a strong advocate of the Homeland Security Department’s “If You See Something, Say Something” national campaign, which encourages people to report any suspicious behavior or unusual activity to the proper authorities. LOOKING AHEAD, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE NEXT STEP OR

GOAL FOR YOU?

With the Chandler PD, we have the Guardian Academy, and it is being looked into to put this into an electronic platform so that we can reach and educate more community members. I will also be look into retirement options, which will allow me more time to give back to the community and organizations I believe in.WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE OR SAYING?

Scholar, Professor, ASU Doctoral Candidate, Mom of three.  And this

just begins to describe Karen Gallagher!

Gallagher almost secretly enlisted in the Army in 1988, telling her

parents just prior to being sworn in after high school graduation.

“Military service taught me anything is possible. Success is a

choice, and the only failure is giving up,” she says. After a decade

and a half of war, she earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree while

waiting tables and caring for her child with disabilities.

How was she successful? “I didn’t know it wasn’t possible,” she says.

Gallagher is pursuing her Ph.D. in speech and hearing science,

focusing on the effects of brain injuries and cognition conditions

experienced by military veterans. She finds too many students who

fall through the cracks because they have symptoms that aren’t as

apparent as those who qualify for intense treatment through the VA.

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF WHAT YOU DO?

something different about them and they need help. To be able to

offer that help is beyond rewarding.

WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING OR FRUSTRATING PART OF WHAT

HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK, COMMUNITY AND A PERSONAL LIFE?

Suzanne Nicholls Joyner not only loves her job, it is her passion.“Serving as a defender of parents who have had their children

taken away affects more than just the parent and child, it affects the extended family and our community,” she says.

The passion is evident as Nicholls Joyner works hard to be more than an attorney by communicating and helping parents fix their issues so they can be reunited with their children. She is often able to assist parents to understand they have simply made bad choices, and are not bad people.

“Dependency law is a very sensitive area and I often see par-ents being treated as second-class citizens. Everyone deserves a fair opportunity, regardless of cultural and economic biases,” she says. “Oftentimes, the way the process is handled by the profes-sionals is not only devastating to the parent, but it is horribly and irreparably devastating to their children.”WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF WHAT YOU DO?

LISSETTE LENT – INSPIRING MOMSFOUNDER, RED GLASSES PRODUCTIONS AND AUTHOR,

“WE’RE NOT SO DIFFERENT AFTER ALL”

Lissette Lent is a successful, award-winning realtor but after the

birth of her fourth child, Maggie Hope, who was born with Trisomy 8

mosaicism (a rare genetic disorder), Lent felt driven to make a differ-

ence for the millions of children and families living with special needs.

In 2015, this mom of four achieved her dream by publishing her

first children’s book,  “We’re Not So Different After All”. Through Red

Glasses Productions, the company that Lent founded in 2014, she

inspires others in her belief that it is the responsibility of parents and

community leaders to raise a generation of children who are aware

and unafraid of people who look and act differently. Lent visits local

elementary schools, conducting school assemblies to read her book

and encourage children to act with kindness and compassion.

“It is my passion to be a voice for children, like my daughter, that

don’t have a voice. My book gives parents and teachers a tool to

start important conversations delivering a message of acceptance

and hope,” she says.

She sits on the board of directors of Southwest Human

Development (SWHD) and is an ambassador for SWHD and Easter

Seal’s “Walk With Me” event. Later this year, she hopes to create the

Red Glasses Foundation, a nonprofit organization partnering with

schools and hospitals to spread her vision of awareness, acceptance

and hope for the special needs community.

JENNIFER BELL – ANIMAL ADVOCACYFOUNDING DIRECTOR AND VOLUNTEER OF ONE DOG ARIZONA

Jennifer Bell started One Dog Arizona, a 501(c)(3) organization, after witnessing first-hand the great need for ethical rescue orga-nizations. Starting as a volunteer and then as a paid fundraiser and event coordinator for a large rescue organization, Bell was led by her calling when the rescue closed. There were so many pups needing safety and care, so she created One Dog Arizona seven years ago.

Whether a dog comes into rescue as the result of a family mem-ber’s death or due to the owner not wanting the dog anymore or as a shelter rescue, every pup finds an appropriate and loving home.

“We provide an owner-surrender program in an effort to reduce the number of dogs entering the shelters,” she says.

Through her rescue, Bell always puts each dog’s well being before anything else. The “whole dog” philosophy insures both physical and emotional needs are met. Every rescue dog has their medical needs met, is microchipped, spayed or neutered, and enters behavioral classes as part of their comprehensive adoption package.

Bell feels especially blessed to have a network of volunteers and fosters that help to give each dog a new beginning.WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF WHAT YOU DO?

For me, it is taking a once scared and unwanted animal and giving them the love and support they need to go on to live a great life, with a family all their own. I love working with the smart and frustrated dogs that have been previously misunderstood, or even abused.WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR THOSE THINKING OF GETTING

JENNIFER KRIENERT – INSPIRING MOMSFOUNDER OF ROCK YOUR DIFFERENT

Jennifer Krienert’s son, Rory, was just over a year old when his sister noticed his eyes seemed different.

“Rory has a cross-eyed condition called Strabismus or Squint, causing sensitivity to bright light,” Krienert says.

Instead of making this a negative, Krienert turned it into a positive by creating something fun—a cartoon kid in his image who wears an eye patch. And that is how a little company called Rock Your Different began.

Realizing that other kids will notice the eye patch, she didn’t want him to feel that being different is bad. Printing the cartoon image on hats, Krienert’s family and friends started wearing them around town. What started as a small gesture for Rory turned into a whole company that helps both kids and adults celebrate what makes them unique through their line of T-shirts, tank tops, sweatshirts and hats.

Plans for Rock Your Different are to expand and develop addi-tional designs for causes such as Type 1 diabetes and autism. A portion of all proceeds go to Phoenix Children’s Hospital. HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK, COMMUNITY AND A PERSONAL LIFE?

This has always been a bit of a challenge. Rory, now almost 3, is always with me, so I work when he's napping. When I'm shipping out shirts and hats, he is my helper. My girls are almost 10 and 11 so they are busy and I try to incorporate them into my work as well. I also try to find volunteer opportunities that all three of my children can do with me.WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR THOSE THINKING OF GETTING

INVOLVED IN THEIR COMMUNITY OR GIVING BACK?

I would definitely say that nothing is too small. My family just signed up to bake cookies for our troops. It is something that we can do at home on our own time, so it's a great place to start.RockYourDifferent.com—AS

SMOKIN FINS DEBUTS ITS FIRST ARIZONA LOCATION

ARTICLE KATHLEEN BLAIR | PHOTOGRAPHY DAVID APEJI

Hot Spot

After just two months of being open, word is out that Smokin Fins is a great place for delicious seafood, fresh sushi

and amazing smoked meats. The concept started five years ago by three friends who had ties to Boise, Idaho, and took their years of restaurant experience to create a great selection of food choices at affordable prices in an inviting, relaxing atmosphere. The Chandler location is the first for Arizona, with others in Colorado and Idaho.

Executive Chef Wiley Earl is responsible for the wide variety of unique items on the menu—as well as having an influence on the daily chalkboard specials that are served in all the Fins Group locations. He brings with him a vast amount of experience, having studied under world-renowned chefs, and has the talent to create winning combinations that produce savory entrees. His love for cooking spills over to every meal prepared.

avocado, which has a delicious lobster crab salad perched on half an avocado. Both offer amazing flavors making them guests’ favorites.

The moist Colorado buffalo burger is charbroiled on a cedar plank and topped with melted smoked Gouda cheese and herb mushrooms. It’s served with loaded mashed potatoes and a roasted corn and spinach medley. A very generous portion and a delicious meal make this a winner! Save room for the scrumptious homemade bread pudding dessert that’s served with vanilla ice cream and an awesome bourbon caramel sauce. Large enough to share and so yummy that on most nights, they run out.

You’ll want to go on your own culi-nary taste journey as there are so many amazing choices that you’ll find yourself returning to try a new item like the lobster

stuffed deviled eggs, smoked bison meat-balls, sea scallops and seared ahi, sushi rolls, mango shrimp tacos and slow-smoked pork items. And don’t forget the kids! Their special menu has six items with a side and drink for only $4.99.

A must-try is an Icetini, even if you are not a martini drinker. This unique drink comes in an ice-molded glass that keeps it chilled and allows the ice to drip to the bottom without diluting the drink. It’s so refreshing!

You will find only high-quality items pur-chased and sourced locally, whenever possi-ble, on the menu. The Sterling Salmon comes from the pristine Pacific waters off British Columbia where only 5 percent of the hand-se-lected salmon meets strict criteria. The wagyu Angus beef and pork comes from Snake River Farms in Idaho where they have incorporated a Japanese method of raising animals who produce extremely tender and flavorful meats.

Operating Partner Nate Ingersoll is definitely passionate about what he does. He was with the Fins Group for two-and-a-half years in Idaho before opening the Chandler location, and brings vast experience in the restaurant industry.

“From your first impression to your last visit, we strive to make each experience unique and enjoyable for our guests,” Ingersoll says.

Something for EveryoneSmokin Fins wants every one of their

guests to have fun, whether they’re hanging out on the front patio enjoying happy hour or catching the latest game at the bar or attending a lunch meeting with a client. The menu has something for everyone—offer-ings such as fresh sushi, seafood platters, crisp salads and delicious burgers.

My dining adventure began with the key lime calamari appetizer. The calamari is from Town Dock in Point Judith, Rhode Island, and nationally recognized as the only squid labeled “Green Best Choice.” The high-qual-ity calamari has a buttery flavor and is lightly breaded and served with the flavorful key lime aioli. Another great option is the stuffed lobster

FRESH BERRIES AND CREAMY CHOCOLATE GOODNESS ON A PLATE

Culinary Creations

CHOCOLATE STRAWBERRY CREAM CHEESE PIE

Preheat oven to 325 degrees 1 1/3 C crushed graham cracker crumbs      (substitute Oreo crumbs, if you really like chocolate)3 T granulated sugar2/3 C melted butter12 oz. softened cream cheese1 1/4 C semisweet chocolate chips

(save 1/4 C for top)1/4 C packed brown sugar1 T vanilla12 oz. frozen whipped topping, thawed in refrigerator (very important!)1/2 in. square of paraffin1 QT fresh strawberries, sliced lengthwise about 1/8” thick

CRUST

Combine cookie crumbs, sugar and butter well. Spray 9” pie pan lightly with cooking spray or lightly grease. Press crumbs into bottom and up sides of pan, distributing evenly. Bake for 10 minutes. Cool.

FILLING

Melt one cup of chocolate chips in a dou-ble boiler or microwave. Be careful the choc-olate does not burn. Beat cream cheese until light and fluffy with electric mixer. Add brown sugar and vanilla. Mix well. Add cooled choc-olate.  Mix well. Fold in the whipped topping. Spoon the filling into the cooled crust evenly, smoothing out the top. Cover with foil and chill at least four hours.

TOPPING

Don’t top until just a couple hours before serving as berries can get soft. Start at the outer edge of the pie and make a row of strawberries overlapping the edge of the pie pan a bit. Continue laying out strawberries in circular, overlapping rows. Save one whole berry for the very center of the pie. Heat par-affin and remain 1/4 C chocolate (add paraf-fin if chocolate is too thick to drizzle). Drizzle chocolate from a small spoon over berries.

I absolutely love fresh strawberries when they are in season and my favorite way to enjoy them is when they are covered in chocolate!

My mom was always a great cook, as is my sister. But I never did well following recipes because I loved improvising. A few years back, I was about to make a cheesecake and some chocolate-covered strawberries for a neighborhood barbecue. True to form, I went off the grid and came up with this beautiful pie! I have entered this recipe in contests three different times and won every time. If you would like to impress your family and friends, give this a try. Beautiful, delicious and EASY, I promise!
