MODERATOR: MR KEN CANNANE - CEO, AMROBAPANEL: MR MYLES TOMPKINS – CEO, AIRWORK HELICOPTERS MR JOHN MCDERMOTT – PRESIDENT, MCDERMOTT AVIATION CASA REPRESENTATIVE

There is an acute shortage of qualified and suitably licensed helicopter support staff in Australia. This has been the case for the past few years, and there seems little likelihood of this situation improving any time soon. Over recent years many educational institutions have curtailed training courses for aviation specific engineers and apprentice programs have come to a standstill. This issue continues to have a significantly negative impact upon the future viability of the Australian helicopter industry. Hear what is not happening, what should happen on a factual real-time basis, and what immediate initiatives the industry needs to undertake to maintain its future viability. This session is a must attend for anyone involved in support services for the Australian helicopter industry.

1200 - 1245 HELI-MUSTERING – BEEFING UP THE ROTARY-WINGED BUSINESS

MR JOHN ARMSTRONGCHIEF PILOT, HELI-MUSTER

Heli-mustering is an exacting, exciting and sometimes exhilarating VFR operational environment. It is a most difficult and daily dangerous challenge. More often than not heli-mustering is conducted in isolated locations without the support many in the industry take for granted. Heli-mustering is a very skilful pilot undertaking, generally within a hostile operational environment. Hear and learn first hand what it is all about from one of Australia’s most experienced and respected specialist heli-mustering pilots.

1400 - 1445 A LAWYER’S VIEW OF YOUR AVIATION INSURANCE POLICY

MR BEN MARTIN PARTNER, NORTON WHITE LAWYERS

The rotary-wing industry is dependent on insurance coverage for protection against exposure arising out of what is viewed by many as high-risk operations. It is critical that industry professionals possess a solid understanding of the nuances of their aviation insurance coverage so they can protect their interests and assets to the greatest extent possible. Mr Martin’s long experience as a specialist aviation legal counsel, to defend claims with industry and insurer, provides a unique view of the traps and pitfalls of insurance coverage. A claim event is too late to understand the scope of coverage that exists, or, regrettably, may not exist. This is a must attend session for every helicopter owner/operator with more than a passing interest in their insurance cover.

1445 - 1530 FAMILIARITY BREEDS CONTEMPT – PREVENTABLE SAFETY MEASURES – WORKING WITH THE ATSB

MR GREG HOODCHIEF COMMISSIONER, ATSB

MR CHRIS MANNINGAVIATION COMMISSIONER, ATSB

Do Australian helicopter operators and their pilots take seriously their responsibility and accountability for the maintenance of preventative safety measures in their business models? Hardly a week goes by without a helicopter involved in a safety related incident somewhere around the country. In terms of the ‘public perception’ of the Australian helicopter industry, these ‘incidents’ are not helpful and on many occasions, may well have been avoidable. It is the role of the ATSB investigators to work independently of ‘regulators ’and ‘industry experts’ during helicopter ‘incident’ investigations. Hear first-hand of the ATSB’s observations, concerns and real-time recommendations for the industry moving forward.

MODERATOR: MR PAUL TYRRELL - CEO, AHIAPANEL: MR MARTIN WILLIAMS – DIRECTOR, AUSTBROKERS ABS PTY LTD MR AMIT CHOKSI – DIRECTOR AVIATION FINANCE, FINLEASE MR DAVID CRICK – MANAGING DIRECTOR, DAVAIR GROUP

At ROTORTECH in 2018, this session on the Conference Program was one the most highly-rated by delegates. In response to numerous requests to repeat an updated version of this informative panel session, it has been incorporated into the 2020 Conference Program. This session presents a unique opportunity to hear from and question helicopter industry financial and insurance experts. The majority of commercial helicopters are at a price point where finance is essential. Financing decisions made at the time of purchase / rental have significant consequences during the term of the financing and at expiry of the finance agreement. In addition, many in the helicopter business are often confronted with the decision to re-equip and commit to expending large and significant amounts of money. Industry financing is complex, confusing and not for the faint-hearted. Purchase outright, leasing alternatives, initial valuation and the setting of residual values, alternative finance derivatives, FX and fuel options, are all but a few of the considerations. What might be the appropriate and commensurate level of insurance coverage? Our panel will provide a holistic perspective to helicopter finance. Hear honest and forthright opinions and advice from helicopter industry financial experts and one of Australia’s leading helicopter insurance brokers on what might best suit your business in the future.
