Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and seven Indian In-stitutes of Technology (IITs) will jointly conduct the GraduateAptitude Test in Engineering (GATE-2016) on January 30 and31 and February 6 and 7 across the country. It is an online com-puter-based test consisting of 23 papers. The GATE score of acandidate reflects a relative performance level in particular sub-ject in the examination. A valid GATE score is mandatory forgetting scholarship from MHRD for higher study.

Aavin gift packs for festivals

This festive season, Aavin, the Tamil Nadu Cooperative MilkProducers Federation, is looking to introduce gift packs that willhave something for everyone in the family. The gift pack will beapt for Navarathri, Deepavali, Christmas and Pongal. CostingRs.350 each, the gift pack will be introduced through Aavin outletsin about a week.

The pink and blue packs will contains 250gms of gulabjamun,200 gms of badammix powder, two bars of chocolates, two packsof maavin mango drink and 200 ml of Aavin ghee. The shelf lifeof the pack is 25 days. Beyond individual homes, it is looking totarget corporate clients and cooperative societies. A lot of com-panies give their employees some gift during the festive season,said an official. Meanwhile, Aavin is building its brand in thedistricts through sale of ece cream. Atleast 25,000 litres of icecream has been sold in the last few months at district head quar-ters. The response from the districts has been very good. weare procuring more refrigeratered vans to enhance supply. Onceour Ambattur plant becomes operational in about two months,ice creame production will increase to 15,000 litres a day fromthe present 3,000 litres, an official said. Aavin is encouragin col-leges and students to go for its brand of ice creams.

Simple seps to stave off dengue

The monsoon will soon begin while the rains will be awelcome relief from the heat, doctors are warning residents tostay vigilant about fevers and be careful while managing them,especially dengue. Dengue, the WHO says, is a viral infectiontransmitted by the bite of an an infected female Aedes mosquito.It is not directly transmitted from person to person. Symptomsappear 3-14 days after the bite. There is no specific treatment.

Symptoms of dengue fever include high fever, severeheadaches, severe joint and muscle pain, pain behind the eyesand radhes. “While in most cases, patinets will get better withoutmedical assistance, if any warning sense appear, patients mustsee a doctor” says Bala Ramachandran, Medical Director, KanchiKamakoti Child Trust Hospital. The danger signs you need towatch out for, especially when the fever subsides are severeabdominal pain, persistent vomiting, red spot or patches on theskin, bleeding from the nose or gums, cold extremities, lethergy,vomiting blood, blacl stools and difficultu in breathing. If any ofthese signs are present, go to the hospital immediately.

While paracetamol can be taken for the fever, do nototherwise self-medicate, emphasises T.N.Devarajan, seniorconsultant, Apollo First Med Hospital. Neglecting dengue fevercan lead to lung failure and its spread to the brain, says Prof.Devarajan, ‘Since there are four types of virus, patients whohave got one type and have recovered can still get another typeand fall ill again’ he says.
