Students in grades 3 and up have been working on animations in technology class. Animation is the art of creating moving images with the use of computers. Students use computer images and move and copy the images to create motion. The students can import a background image and create a visual story.

Students have learned dif ferent techniques to create motion of dif ferent speeds and distance of objects on the screen. Students have been able to save their animations to the school server. Ask your child to show you their animations, as they have done a great job on them.

TECH TIME - CREATING ANIMATIONS

AUTHOR SHERYL MACFARLANE VISITS 8S

A special guest visited Mrs. Stewart's grade 8 class on February 12. Award-winning author Sheryl MacFarlane, best known for her beloved children's books including "Waiting for the Whales" and "Jessie's Island", spent the morning with the students to talk about her writ ing experiences.

MacFarlane discussed her own writ ing career, sharing insight with the students on how she turns a page of rough notes into a published novel. She offered many pieces of advice to aspiring young authors, including "carry a notebook with you everywhere" and to write about what they know and love best.

The bright and lively writer had the students do several short writ ing activit ies, including black-out poetry, creative imagery descriptions, and list poems. The students were enthusiastic participants and enjoyed the opportunity to work on their creative writ ing skil ls.  They send a big "thank you" to the Yellowknife Public Library and RLN administration for allowing them to spend the morning with Sheryl MacFarlane. .

Spanish Club

EVENTS AT RLNS

RLN Spanish Club students have been busy from December until now learning all about Spanish and Latin American Culture, History, Food, Language, and Art. Each year Spanish Club is open to any interested students in grades 6,7, and 8. This year there has been a great interest in the club and students were eager and motivated to learn new phrases, sample new foods, and learn about the history and culture of various Latin countries.

Teachers Rachelle Mercredi and Josiane Asselin are the club organizers and once a week they meet with the Spanish Club students and provide opportunities in which they are exposed to many Spanish speaking cultures, dif ferent from their own. Students practiced skits, learned expressions, cooked, ate, l istened to music, and even tried out new Latin Dances! It 's always a great t ime! The idea behind the club is to motivate students to learn a new language, have an appreciation for a culture dif ferent to their own, and perhaps entice

kids to one day travel and explore more of the Latin American world!

Dufflebag Theatre Event

The Nearly World Famous Duff lebag Theatre visited RLNS this past month and performed the play, Robin Hood, in front of the entire school. It was a hilarious, interactive performance that involved everyone in the audience. Some students were even lucky enough to play a major role in the production. After the performance, the grade four students were fortunate to participate in the troupe?s drama workshop. The theatre troupe introduced the students to a world of pretend and improvisation through many drama exercises. Some of this work was carried on into the classroom where students in 4L were challenged to take on the role of a fairy tale character and write a report.

Jack and the Beanstalk as told by Jack?s mom

One day my cow stopped giving milk so I told my only son, Jack, to go sell our cow. When Jack came back I was so excited to see how much we got, but I was very mad at Jack when he told me that he got so called ?magic beans?. I threw them out of the window and sent Jack to bed without supper. The next morning I looked out the window and there was Jack climbing a giant beanstalk. When he came back he was holding a bag of gold. When we ran out of the gold, Jack went back up and came back with a hen that laid golden eggs. After, he went back again and came back with a golden harp and a giant! Jack chopped that beanstalk with a mighty chop and the giant was never seen again!

Jack and the Beanstalk as told by the Ogre?s wife

One day a tiny, t iny boy came to my doorstep so I let him in for some cheese and bread. When my husband, the Ogre, came home I hid Jack in the oven because my husband eats kids. My husband requested his sack of gold so I got it for him to count. He fell asleep and that rascal boy, Jack, stole all the gold. Then another day Jack stole the goose that lays the golden eggs. Then he came back and tried to steal the singing harp. My husband saw Jack and started chasing him. Jack went down the beanstalk and my husband was so mad he went down too. I never saw Jack or my husband again.

Extra, Extra, Read All About It

The wolf strikes again! Litt le Red was going to her Grandma?s house until the wolf stopped her. He glared at her wanting to eat her. The wold told her to get some twigs. But then he disappeared. The wolf got to Grandma?s f irst. When he got in he ate Grandma. Then he got in an apron and night hat and waited for Litt le Red. Not too long later Litt le Red came and the wolf ate her too. A Woodsman heard and followed the noise and chopped open the wolf and let Litt le Red and old Granny out. He stuffed the wolf full of rocks. Everyone is safe!
