THE RABBIS TEACHISRAEL CELEBRATES 70 YEARS

This April, we will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the Jewish state. Israel is a very old and a very young country, both at the same time. Even after 70 years, Israel is still continually being created every day, by every decision she makes, every standard she upholds, and by her attempts to defend the safety of her inhabitants while seeking peace

with her neighbors. Israel is a place that holds profound religious and spiritual meaning for millions of people around the world, and it is, truly, a place where it feels as if the stones can speak, and where we can walk in the footsteps of our ancestors.

Every year, as our 10th graders prepare to leave for Israel on their Confirmation trip, I remind them that they do not travel to Israel, they return – even if they’ve never been before. That is what it means to have a “homeland.”

While the teens do not quite grasp the meaning of those words as they sit in the sanctuary here in Cherry Hill, somehow, over the course of a ten-day trip, they come to understand the significance of such a sacred place.

And while there are certainly times when we see Israel in the news and feel either frustrated at her actions or beam with pride at her accomplishments, the connection and love many of us feel for Israel comes not from how she is portrayed in the newspapers, but from our own experience of having been there to see and feel Israel for ourselves.

The famous Israeli writer Amos Oz once wrote:

M’KOR ORA NIGHT OF “DE’LIGHTS”

Outstanding honorees, delicious wining and dining, exciting entertainment and the opportunity to support Congregation M’kor Shalom…could an evening be more perfect?

M’kor Or is a tribute to congregational rising star, Sarah Zalcmann, Early Childhood Center guiding lights Harriet Uris and Judi Weinberg, and past president Rolane Sunshine, who will receive the Marylee and Stuart Alperin Leadership Award.

The fun begins at 5:00 pm on Sunday, June 3, at the synagogue, with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, followed by presentations to our honorees, dinner and dessert by Barclay Caterers and the exuberant entertainment of Nefesh Mountain.

Doni Zaslow and Eric Lindberg, lead singers of Nefesh Mountain, with Gary Oleyar and Tim Klah on violin and bass, will bring Jewish Bluegrass to our congregation at M’kor Or. Fusing the sounds of Appalachia with familiar songs from the soul of Judaism, their unique music is joyous and infectious. See for yourself why their performance brought delegates at the recent URJ Biennial to their feet! You can preview their first album on YouTube and then come and enjoy them in person.

You won’t want to miss M’kor Or. Attend with friends, place an ad to the honorees in the Tribute Book or combine both by becoming a sponsor of the evening. After all, what we need is YOU…to add your light to this shining night! Any questions? FROM YOUR LEADERSHIPJason Turner, Vice President

JUST SAY YES!

My family and I have been members of M’kor Shalom for over 15 years. While I was raised and educated at Temple Beth Sholom when it was in Haddon Heights, we were drawn to M’kor Shalom’s pursuit of social action/justice as well as creative and innovative

religious services. Both of my sons were confirmed, went on their class trips to Israel and, in fact, my oldest son David currently teaches in our Religious School.

Those who know me understand my commitment to our synagogue and my love of our “family of families.” I have served on the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee, and as a past committee chair. With this involvement, one might think I’m quite a volunteer. The truth is, I haven’t volunteered for any of these leadership positions. I was asked. And I said, “Yes.” And I’m the better for saying, “Hineini.”

In the coming months, I hope someone from M’kor Shalom asks you for something, and you can get the same great feeling that I do when I say yes. Say yes to helping us grow vegetables at the Urban Garden in Camden. Say yes to joining a committee in an area that interests you. Say yes to helping the men of IHOC become sustaining members of our community. Don’t stay on the sidelines. Don’t assume someone else will pick up the slack. We can all contribute to continuing M’kor Shalom’s traditions and, perhaps, collaboratively build some new ones as well.

Jason Turner, Vice President

EAT, LEARN, SING!AT M’KOR SHALOM SCHOLAR-IN-RESIDENCE WEEKENDBy Sherry Wolkoff

Be sure to set aside April 13 and 14, when our biennial Scholar- in-Residence Weekend will provide us with a variety of stimulating and music-filled events. The weekend kicks off with our Friday night Kabbalat Shabbat service, featuring our acclaimed guest speaker, Rabbi Kenneth Kanter, author and lecturer on Jewish contributions to popular music. Following the service, he will conduct a Sing-along with music from the Tin Pan Alley period from 1890 to 1940, while explaining the Jewish roots of these songs. A light dinner is included with the Sing-along, which is open to the public and costs $36 per person.

On Saturday morning, Rabbi Kanter will lead us in Torah Study immediately followed by a special Spice Up Your Judaism program, where he will discuss Jewish Music from Trope to Debbie Friedman. The evening programming will begin with a Donor Reception, after which Rabbi Kanter will lead us in Havdalah. This will be followed by a Broadway Cabaret, where he will discuss Jewish influences on modern Broadway with local young professionals who will illustrate the music. Think of artists such as Leonard Bernstein and Oscar Hammerstein II, Irving Berlin and the Gershwins. Think of songs such as “Oh What A Beautiful Morning,” “Lady Is a Tramp,” and even “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” A dessert extravaganza will top off the evening. The Cabaret, with elaborate desserts, is open to the public and couvert is $36 per person.

Rabbi Kanter serves as Associate Dean and Director of the Rabbinical School for the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, Ohio. He received his B.A. degree in Jewish and American History from Harvard University in 1974, his M.A.H.L. degree from Hebrew Union College in 1978, was ordained in 1980, and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity from HUC-JIR in 2005. He served for ten years as Rabbi of Chattanooga’s Mizpah Congregation and is a popular lecturer and author of numerous books, journals and articles focusing on the Jewish contribution to American popular music — including his first book, The Jews on Tin Pan Alley, published in 1982.

Shabbat services, Torah Study and the Spice Up Your Judaism program are free and open to the public, but advance registration is required. Donor opportunities start at $118 per person and include all events and a private donor reception with Rabbi Kanter. The weekend is made possible with the generous support of Congregation M’kor Shalom’s Helen and Leon Weinberg Scholar-in-Residence Endowment Fund and a grant from the Community Fund of the Jewish Community Foundation. A portion of the proceeds will support the Religious School Scholarship Fund of M’kor Shalom.

The Scholar-in-Residence Committee has been working very hard to ensure that this will be a weekend to remember. Watch for more details in your mail and E!Minders, and we look forward to sharing many delightful M’kor Moments with you at the events.

MICHAEL LEVIN: A HERO IN HEAVENOn March 20 at 7:00 pm, there will be a showing at M’kor Shalom of the film “Michael Levin: A Hero in Heaven,” which tells the story of a young man who left his home in Philadelphia to volunteer as a soldier in the Israel Defense Force (IDF) Paratroopers Brigade. In 2006, Michael fell in battle while defending Israel against Hezbollah in the Second Lebanon War. In his memory, the Lone Soldier Center was established in Israel to support other young “lone soldiers,” who voluntarily leave their families and risk their lives to serve in the IDF. Following the film will be a special Q&A with Michael’s mother Harriet and sister Elisa. There is no cost to attend the event, and it is open to the public. However, attendees are encouraged to make a donation to the Lone Soldier Center in honor of Michael Levin (https://lonesoldiercenter.com/donate/). A station will be set up to accept donations that evening. The event will be co-sponsored by our Education & Youth Committee and the JCRC.

CONGREGANTS IN THE NEWS

SALLY JOHNSTON WINS RED RIBBONSally Johnston, daughter of M’kor Shalom members Art and Marna Johnston, and Hillary Johnston (z”l), was the winner of the poster contest in this year’s Red Ribbon Campaign in Cherry Hill. The annual Poster and Essay

Contest, sponsored by the Cherry Hill Alliance on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, provides an opportunity for students to illustrate how they can live their best drug-free lives. Sally, a 12th grader at Cherry Hill High School West, was honored with other finalists during a ceremony on October 26.

DAVID SNYDER APPOINTED EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF MACCABI USA David Snyder credits his Zionist grandparents for igniting his love of Israel. This passion, which ultimately shaped his career, was further stoked by the “virtual trip” to Israel he took with his M’kor Shalom Judaica class in the 1980s.

After eight years as the Executive Director of our local Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC), the Cherry Hill resident will continue advocating for Israel in his new role as Executive Director of Philadelphia-based Maccabi USA.

Snyder said it was not an easy choice to leave the JCRC – where he is credited with raising the profile of the organization that combats anti-Semitism, advocates for Israel and builds relationships within and outside South Jersey’s Jewish community – for Maccabi USA, which promotes Jewish continuity and Zionism through athletics.

In his new role, he is tasked with raising the profile of the organization that fields teams of Jewish athletes to compete in the World Maccabiah Games, held in Israel every four years, as well as the Pan American and European Maccabi Games. It also is the sponsor of the JCC Maccabi Games for teens in North America.

“Athletics is not the big focus or the big intrigue for me,” said Snyder, who, along with his wife Allison and children Sam, 20, Josh, 18, and Ben, 16, are actively involved at M’kor Shalom and the larger Jewish community. “It’s really about having more people gain a love and appreciation for Israel. Athletes are leaders. They are disciplined and end up being great ambassadors for the state of Israel upon their return.”

Snyder said he plans to stay involved both in the JCRC and at M’kor Shalom, where he is currently chair of our College Connection Committee. “I’ve been very fortunate and privileged to live and work in my own community trying to make a difference,” said the lifelong member of M’kor Shalom.

At JCRC, M’kor Shalom congregant Jeff Shacket is serving as interim director while a search continues for Snyder’s replacement.

RABBIS TEACH (continued from page one)

I know: It is impossible to ‘educate to love’—you cannot ‘educate someone to love the land,’nor can you ‘educate someone to love the scenery.’With love, you can ‘infect’ someone else.Sometimes love can be awakened, sometimes, but not with a strong hand, not with an outstretched arm, and not with burning anger—rather through an approach of mutuality.

You come to a place—a hill, the desert, a spring, a house…You change it and make your mark upon it, but it is also to be openand give it the opportunity to leave its mark on you.

As we approach Israel’s 70th anniversary, there is so much to celebrate. May we recommit ourselves to our relationship with Israel – through mutual love – not only being touched and moved by Israel, but by touching and moving Israel to continue to strive for holiness in all that she does.

B’shalom,Rabbi Jennifer L. Frenkel

HEADING FOR THE HOMELANDThese are the happy faces of our soon-to-be Confirmation Israel Trip travelers. We have proudly run these incredible trips since 1996, bringing over 400 teens on their first trip to our Jewish Homeland! Along the way, we have built special relationships with two kibbutzim, Yahel and Lotan, which are part of the Reform movement. Most importantly, we have strengthened the connection between our students, Judaism, Israel,

our clergy and teachers and our congregation. This trip has become a tradition at M’kor Shalom, so don’t be surprised if you hear your 5th grader mention who her roommates are going to be in 5 years!

The trips are paid for by a partnership among the families, the congregation, the Gift of Israel Program, and the Jeremy Kane Gift of Israel Fund, in memory of our 2004 Confirmand and U.S. Marine, who made the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan. In addition, there are financial need scholarships made possible through the generosity of the following:

1. The establishment by Drs. Norman and Arlene Silvers of the Amy Silvers Israel Scholarship Fund, in memory of their daughter, one of our first Confirmands, who died at age 21. This is a restricted fund held at the Jewish Community Foundation, the distribution from which can only be used for Confirmation Israel Trip scholarships;

2. The grandson of Stanley and Clare Feinstein as a way of honoring his grandparents and their commitment to Jewish education and Israel; and

3. A private donor who understands the value in travelling to Israel with your clergy, teachers and peers.

DEAR SHARONSharon Halperin, Director of our Early Childhood Center, shares a special letter:

What an amazing experience Owen is having in Kindergarten. We are truly impressed by how well both teachers know Owen, both personally and academically. When we saw Owen’s portfolio of his academic work, we were amazed to see how far he has come this year. This past summer, we tried to get him to work on reading and writing with me, but he had absolutely no interest. Fast forward to now, and it’s incredible to see how he is eager to read stories at home to his siblings. He has used his newfound creative writing skills to author homemade books, write out his Chanukah wish list and create a NFL playoff bracket. Owen has always been interested in math, and we’re so grateful to the teachers for recognizing this and finding ways to challenge him. The fact that the Kindergarten children have a different “special” every day is so important to us, and I know a true highlight of each day for Owen, too. We love the way the art curriculum has exposed him to such a diverse group of artists and their techniques; we look forward to the display of student work each week. Recently, when they were predicting snow on a Coach Pat day, Owen said he was hoping school would not be cancelled because he did not want to miss gym. What kid wishes there won’t be a snow day?! We could go on and on about the ways we feel music, Hebrew, library and of course Shabbat and Havdalah have all had a positive effect on Owen’s schooling as well. However, beyond this strong curriculum, for us what stands out the most about Owen’s Kindergarten experience so far is just what a joyful year it has been. Owen loves learning and coming to school, and we know this love of learning will serve him so well going forward. We are going to look back and feel this was one of the best investments we could have made in Owen’s education. Thank you, thank you, thank you for all you have done to support this wonderful program at the ECC! Sarah and David

Committee NewsMEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE “MATCHMAKERS”

Robin Schwartz and Robin Kushner, the dynamic duo who head up M’kor Shalom’s Membership Committee, approached their new positions this year with two main goals: To find ways to engage existing members and to attract new members to the synagogue. Although their mission does entail a few events throughout the year, such as a new member brunch and membership dinners, their approach focuses more on making personal contacts. “When someone calls the synagogue expressing interest in membership, we call them back and just chat with them,” explains Robin S. “Once we have an idea of their stage in life and their interests, we contact whatever group might be the best match for them. If they have young children, we get someone from the PTO to get in touch with them. If they have school-age children, we contact the Religious School. If they’re in an older demographic, we may refer them to someone from programs like the Daytimers. We try to figure out their niche, what’s going to keep them coming, and then connect them.” Once these new or prospective members start showing up to services or events, Robin makes sure to go up and greet them. If she knows that an event has taken place in a member’s family, like a marriage or birth, she’ll bring that up. The whole point is to make them feel at home and part of the community.

The same basic approach also works for existing members. If it is noticed that we haven’t seen or heard from a particular congregant in a while, “the Robins” will get in touch and try to re-establish a connection, inviting that person to an upcoming event they may be interested in and welcoming them to bring a friend. “We just try to figure out where their interests lie and find a good fit for them here,” explains Robin K. “In other words, we’re matchmakers!”

COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE WELCOMES JOYCE KAY

The Communications Committee is pleased to announce that Joyce Kay will serve as our new external communications liaison. Joyce will be coordinating publicity with The Voice and other media. She brings a variety of experience with M’kor Shalom to her new position, having served as chair of the Adult Education Committee for several years, three years as chairperson of the Brown Bag lunches (organized by The SENIORS), and six years as a member of the Board of Trustees. A retired psychiatrist, Joyce was a pioneer in the field of geriatric psychiatry, and was employed by UMDNJ (presently known as Rowan College). The 20-year congregant is also an accomplished handicrafter and is a member of the Pomegranate Guild of Judaic Needlework. Her beautiful needlework hangs on the wall in the synagogue’s main office.

Joyce was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and she and her husband Gordon, of blessed memory, were married in Israel and emigrated to the U.S. in 1964, where they raised two daughters. In fact, her daughter Jennifer just started helping out with our Shabbat webcasts, so we welcome her to the Communications Committee as well!

Thank you to Sherry Wolkoff who capably served as our communications liaison for many years. Sherry will now be turning her attention to writing more articles for The Source, several of which are featured in this issue.

WOMEN AND SPIRITUALITY CELEBRATING 25TH ANNIVERSARYBy Sherry Wolkoff

As an active congregant since the beginnings of our synagogue, Jaimee Friedman found herself seeking to enhance her spirituality. Hoping to find more than what the prayers and readings had to offer her at religious services, she started the “Women and Spirituality” group 25 years ago for women who were on a similar search for their spiritual identity. The group has evolved and thrived in the years since.

Group members share their spiritual experiences, which leads to a great deal of closeness, according to Sandy Fingerman, who currently serves as co-chair with Rochelle Pepper. The group, which usually meets every other month on Wednesday evenings, is exposed to a variety of discussion topics and spiritual experiences, which are occasionally augmented by guest speakers and excursions to cultural events such as area film festivals at the JCC, the Esther Raab Holocaust Museum and Goodwin Education Center and others. Members also celebrate Jewish holidays together, enjoying prayers, readings and meals at Tu B’Shevat seders, annual Sukkot Suppers and other special occasions.

Recent guest speakers included Renée Seigel, whose mother, Helen Reider, educated young people about the atrocities of the Shoah before her death in 2015. Renée’s presentation was entitled “Please Call Me Helen: A Story of Hope, Resilience and Rebirth.” Myrna Grolnick spoke about her interactions with Marranos, Jewish women who practiced Judaism privately behind a façade of Catholicism. Jaimee Friedman led an interactive discussion, “What Am I Here For?” that focused on finding your purpose and how to implement it. Every August, the group enjoys a potluck dinner at a member’s home (usually Jaimee’s), followed by a discussion of a book with either a Jewish theme or author.

Rochelle Pepper stresses that every woman in the synagogue is welcome to attend their meetings. Their next excursion will be a trip in March to see a film (to be announced) with a Jewish theme at the JCC Film Festival, preceded by dinner at a local restaurant. Later this spring, female congregants are invited to share in the group’s 25th anniversary celebration at a special dinner and program at the synagogue. More details about these events will be shared soon via E!Minders, and additional information can be obtained by emailing Sandy at [email protected] or Rochelle at [email protected]. Come and find your identity, join old friends and make new ones by joining us at Women and Spirituality gatherings. It’s the place to be on Wednesday nights!
