The next day, a rock came flying through that window, leaving broken glass across Isaac’s room. Isaac couldn’t understand who could have done this. His parents tried to explain to him that this was a hate crime. Isaac replied, “You mean someone threw a rock at my window because I’m Jewish?” The police assured the Schnitzers they would do their best to protect them but suggested they remove their menorah from the window in order not to invite further vandalism. However, Isaac’s mother refused to “lower her profile,” to hide her Judaism. She told her son: we will keep up our Chanukah decorations and we will not hide. The Schnitzers soon discovered that there had been many more hate crimes in and around Billings, and that many in the community would be supportive of its minorities. When the African-American church was harassed, people came to the church to show their support. When a Native American family’s home was sprayed with a swastika, thirty painters from the local union turned out to repaint it. One painter lamented, “we can paint the house over, but what can you do with those children’s memories?” The head of the local human rights organization said, “If they want me to be silent, then that’s just not going to happen.” When Isaac’s window was vandalized, his five-year-old non-Jewish neighbor came over with a hand-made Chanukah decoration to put up in his room. When the activists met to decide how to respond, someone recalled the legend of the Danish King during the Nazi occupation of Denmark. The story goes that when the Nazis required every Danish Jew to wear a yellow star, the king chose to wear one as well. Christian and Jewish citizens would not be forcibly distinguished and their solidarity undermined. The legend reminded the people about the danger of silently giving in to violent prejudice. Soon after, the Billings Gazette published a full-page image of a menorah in their newspaper, and by the end of the week eight thousand homes became decorated with menorahs. It was a powerful statement by the entire community about their determination to live together in harmony and making it clear that such hatred would not be tolerated in their town. FROM YOURLEADERSHIPStephanie Zinn, Vice President

Did you attend a high school that required the inclusion of a “yearbook quote” next to your picture? I agonized over finding just the right phrase to capture my essence. This was before the Internet and before memes, so I actually went

to a library and consulted a book of quotes. Some of my classmates saw this as a silly exercise and put little thought into it, but it was (is) my nature to take yearbook matters seriously [side note/fun fact: the VERY first leadership position I held at M’kor Shalom (from 2012-2013) was to coordinate the entire ECC’s classroom yearbooks!].

My younger self had little idea what an impact the immortal words of Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross would have on me for life. Yet, I was drawn to her simile:

People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within.

Why did I choose proudly to become a leader at our synagogue? Because I feel surrounded by people, spanning all generations, who are truly genuine. I am inspired by fellow congregants, members of the Board and Executive Committee, Committee chairs, staff members and clergy who live by Jewish values and care about our community and its continuity.

When I sit in the sanctuary on a Friday or Festival night and gaze up at the windows, I often allow myself to have an “out-of-building” experience. I imagine how beautiful our synagogue windows might appear to passers-by. I smile knowing they are lit from inside by the special people who show up. It has become increasingly more important to me to join them.

Now that we are heading into the long, dark nights of winter, people tend to hibernate. There is so much our synagogue has to offer. Come, add your own light to our house of worship!

Stephanie Zinn, Vice President

the miracle” of the Chanukah story, we have the opportunity to shine our light beyond the confines of our homes and out into the world.

In so doing, our celebration of a little oil lasting long enough for the Maccabees to clean and rededicate the Temple generations ago gives us the opportunity to rededicate ourselves to the Jewish values we hold sacred, to not hide who we are, and to also not stand idly by, or become indifferent to, the suffering of others. A broken window and 8000 Chanukah menorahs certainly remind us of the power and light a community can generate in the face of hatred and darkness.

FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTORMichelle Bross, Executive Director

As many of you know, Congregation M’kor Shalom’s beautiful home is in need of some repairs and updates. Although our House Committee has done an amazing job keeping up as much as possible within our very tight building budget, there are some needed capital improvements that are outside our regular operating budget and will only get done with your help! Here is our current “wish list”:

• Sanctuary stained glass windows above the pews – the frames, which have undergone refitting and sealing a number of times, need to be replaced• Signs – Our outdoor signage is worn and does not light up• Bathrooms need updating – carpeting, wallpaper, counters, fixtures, etc.• Carpeting, padded folding chairs, stage curtain, doorways to the Sukkah, etc. – all need repair/replacing

So as the year draws to a close, if you have capital gains and are just looking to make a donation to alleviate your tax burden, think about M’kor Shalom as a place to give your money. You can either make a general donation to the capital fund or toward a particular project that is meaningful to you. Either way, please get in touch with me at 856-424-4220 or [email protected].

Thank you!

Michelle Bross, Executive Director

MAKING M’KOR SHALOM MATTER: OUR STRATEGIC PLANMarlene Dworkin, President

I am pleased to announce we’re embarking upon a strategic plan to ensure we are building value to our congregants that delivers the promise of M’kor Shalom. We’re only as strong as our membership makes us. Do we have active participation of our congregant families? Are we getting the most out of our membership shares and contributions? How do we groom tomorrow’s leaders? Are we enhancing our spiritual connection to our community? How can we ensure we’re doing what matters? What makes a difference for our congregants?

Carrying forward the work begun by the Executive Committee, we’ve established a Strategic Planning Council. This group will be organized by key areas (e.g., Membership, Leadership Development, Revenue, Fostering Sacred Relationships, Education, Governance) and will be focused on the tactical execution of actual programs. What programs? That’s where you come in.

YOU are part of the answer. We’re looking for congregants who want to share ideas and work with others who care about the future of M’kor Shalom. The group will help prioritize program ideas and see them through their implementation. Now is the time to get involved to bolster and enhance the great meaning M’kor Shalom has in our lives.

If you are interested in participating, please contact our Council Chair, Larry Siegel ([email protected]) or the Council’s Executive Committee liaison Jason Turner ([email protected]).

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWSDuring the winter season, it may be cold and dark outside, but inside the hallways of M’kor Shalom the lights are burning bright.

Our students have been involved with many mitzvah projects since the start of the school year. Our youngest students decorated the sukkah for Sukkot, and our students had an opportunity to have a snack inside and

say the blessings together (pictured below). The entire school collected many boxes of personal care items for Jewish Family and Children’s Service and for Project Sarah.

The children welcomed new members to our M’kor Shalom tent by creating handmade cards for each of them. Inside each card, the children shared the reasons why they love our synagogue and how they hoped the new members would feel at home here.

For our November Shabbaton, the Caring Community Committee came and made blankets with the 4th through 6th graders. These handmade fleece blankets will be given to congregants who are sick or are recovering from surgery. Grades Kindergarten through third grade made Soup in a Jar and Cookies in a Jar to go along with frozen turkeys that were collected for the Neighborhood Center in Camden and Jewish Family and Children’s Service.

But wait, there’s more!

In addition to what we are doing in school, we also have an amazing new Helping Hands Committee, started by two of our 11th graders, Joe Weichert and Ava Rosenstein, and overseen by Adam Roth, our Special Needs Coordinator. These Hebrew High School students are steering our own M’kor Shalom teenagers to engage in community service within our synagogue and for the greater community at large. They helped man the tables at November’s M’kor Marketplace, as we raise money for the Sensory Room. The committee will also be making hamentashen for our Purim Carnival in March.

If your Hebrew High School student wants to join this committee, please contact Joe and Ava at [email protected].

FROM THE CARING COMMUNITY COMMITTEE:

EACH ONE, REACH ONEThe Caring Community Committee is starting a Friendly Visitor program to help congregants, usually elderly, who cannot get to the synagogue regularly, feel as though they are still part of our synagogue family. At any given time, we may have 6-8 such persons who would benefit from having a regular visitor; the amount of time/frequency is left to the volunteer. The purpose is just to make a human connection – no problem solving or personal care involved. The clergy are our source of identifying persons who would benefit. Interested volunteers can contact Jane Bloom at [email protected].

FROM THE SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE:

SOCIAL JUSTICE EVENTSThe Social Action Committee held a Town Hall this fall to “take the pulse” of the congregation and see which are considered the most pressing issues of the day. Gun violence, immigration and the environment came up as the top three, so we will be focusing on activities around those issues in the coming year. For example, we are holding an “Environmental Awareness Week” starting on Sunday, February 2with a family art project using recycled materials, followed on the evening of February 5 by a forum that will address both climate change in general as well as things we can do on a daily basis to make our homes and synagogue “greener.” If you would like to get involved with these events, contact Kim Coffina at [email protected].

On January 19 & 20, M’kor Shalom will participate in the Martin Luther King Weekend of Service with a variety of community events, including making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and other items for the Cathedral Kitchen. Details to come.

FROM THE COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE:

WEBCAST RECORDS!“Virtual” attendance via webcast at our High Holy Day celebrations was at an all-time high this year! In many cases, there was more than one viewer per stream, and they originated from locations all over the country, including Texas, Arizona, Pennsylvania, North and South Jersey, and Maryland. Here are the stats:

• Erev Rosh Hashanah, 40 streams• Rosh Hashanah Family Service, 43 streams• Rosh Hashanah Late Service, 69 streams• Rosh Hashanah Second Day, 19 streams• Kol Nidre, 98 streams• Yom Kippur Family Service, 53 streams• Yom Kippur Late Service, 85 streams• Yom Kippur Afternoon Service, Yizkor and N’eelah, 40 streams

A big thank-you to all the volunteers who set up or ran the webcasts! If you’d like to be one of them for future webcasts, please get in touch with Bruce Weinger at [email protected]. The more volunteers we get, the more often we can offer this important service to our congregants – maybe even every Shabbat!

FROM THE MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE:

WE WANT YOU!You are probably saying to yourself, “I’m already a member of M’kor Shalom and you expect me to read about the Membership Committee?” Yes, we do!

We know you are very busy working, carpooling, organizing play dates, exercising, shopping and cooking, so we’ll call this the MemComm to save time. The MemComm starts the year by welcoming children and parents to the first day of Religious School, then organizes a Havdalah hayride, encourages members to attend an Anniversary Shabbat, advertises an afternoon movie off-site, exercises brain cells during Quizzo, arranges social outings for 30-50-something folks, and wraps up the summer with Peace, Love & BBQ.

Okay, we know you’ve got to run, and you’re probably breathless reading about all these activities, so we’ll make it simple to join us: contact Robin Schwartz at [email protected] or Robin Kushner at [email protected]. (You don’t even have to remember more than one first name when you contact us!)

ADULT EDUCATIONSHABBAT MORNINGS AT M’KOR SHALOMMost Saturday mornings, we offer a Torah Study session from 9:00-10:00 am. From 10:30 am – noon, we offer what we call Spice Up Your Judaism. In between Torah Study and Spice Up we schmooze and nosh. You are welcome to attend one or the other or both! Each session stands on its own. No knowledge of Hebrew or previous experience necessary. You will find a warm, welcoming group, eager to have newcomers join the conversation.

THE ETHICS OF AUTONOMY: A look at how we can understand the NJ Medical Aid in Dying Bill from the perspective of Jewish traditionLed by Rabbi Richard AddressSaturday, December 7, 10:30 am – noonSome jurisdictions in the United States, plus Canada, have passed legislation allowing for Medical Aid in Dying. There remain distinct differences of opinion on how we, as a Jewish community, can or should approach this issue. Medical technology has pushed the envelope of life and death. What about the issue of quality of life? Are there boundaries within Jewish law that can guide us? What issues go into making these sacred decisions?

HEALING SERVICELed by Rabbi Frenkel and Cantor HarrisonSaturday, December 14, 10:00-11:30 am (webcast) – NOTE SPECIAL TIMEOur Healing Service is designed for those facing life’s circumstances who are seeking spiritual, emotional or physical healing, a sense of wholeness and peace; for those navigating their role as caregivers; and for those who want to experience the service and give support to others. Grounded in Jewish prayer and ritual, the service will include moments of liturgy, song, meditation and learning to build a community of compassion, comfort and strength, as we all seek to access places of support and resilience. This special service will include Torah Study and take the place of separate Torah Study and Spice Up sessions that morning. Refreshments will be served following the service. All are welcome.

UPCOMING WEEKDAY CLASSLiturgical Gems: The History, The Theology, The MusicLed by Cantor Rhoda J. Harrison, Ph.D.Two Wednesdays, December 4 & 18, 10:30 am – noonWhile the Jewish people are often referred to as the “People of The Book,” arguably the siddur, the Jewish prayer book, is the Book of the People. This two-session class will offer a peek into the history, the theology and some of the musical expressions of several of the siddur’s most familiar prayers, with the goal of understanding where these prayers come from and how they were formalized into our prayer book. This class is open to the community. No cost for congregants; $10 per person per session for non-members, collected during class.
