Arles to Lyon Aboard M.S. AmaDagio

Dear Members and Friends of The Metropolitan Museum of Art,

Nice, where we begin our trip, has the particular charm of being both French and Italian: it joined France a little over a century and a half ago, and then took on a bit of England when Queen Victoria made it her winter residence. It also makes the perfect introduction to the rest of our voyage. The Rhône has long been the link between the world of the Mediterranean and the rest of France; and on our way to Arles, where we board the AmaDagio, we will experience the French glamour of St. Tropez.

Traveling with us is art historian and Met lecturer Olivier Bernier, to whom the French Government awarded the Order of Arts and Letters. He will share his love and knowledge of the country where he was brought up. Mr. Bernier will speak to us both in the course of lectures on board and as we visit the sites.

Highlights of this river cruise offer a varied and highly entertaining look at the best of the Rhône area. From Arles, where van Gogh lived the most creative years of his life, and Aix, Cézanne’s home town, we will move on to Avignon, where the Popes resided for a century during the Great Schism. There, we will visit the home of the late Drawings Curator of the Louvre and its enchanting garden.

An excursion to Grenoble, known for its major university, will take us to an important museum of 19th- and 20th-century art. Throughout, one of the delights of this trip will be our cruise through the heart of Burgundy with visits to Dijon, the capital of the Great Dukes who ruled there in the 15th century, and Beaune with its spectacular medieval Hospice. Our trip also includes Lyon where we will tour its stellar Museum of Fine Arts and of Textiles.

For those who wish to explore this area further, an optional three-day postlude in Roanne is offered. Enjoy a spectacular stay at Maison Troisgros and dining in what is said to be the finest restaurant in France, as well as excursions to the charming town of Moulins and the dazzling Late Gothic church of Brou.

This trip is co-sponsored by Yale Educational Travel, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and Smithsonian Journeys. I hope you will join us.

Sincerely,

Nina McN. Diefenbach Vice President for Institutional Advancement

OPTIONAL POSTLUDE IN ROANNE September 30 to October 3, 2016

A great culture offers a variety of pleasures. We will have extraordinary artistic experiences, from the amazing Late Gothic church at Brou to the Romanesque basilica of Paray-Le-Monial, and see two delightful faience museums. Then, of all the great three-star Michelin restaurants in France, none has lasted longer than Troisgros and none today offers more superb cuisine. Exquisite flavors, superb pairings, and the most serene of settings make a dinner at Troisgros an experience of a lifetime. Accommodations are at the elegant Maison Troisgros, exclusively reserved for our group. X
