Message from the President:I hope everyone had a wonderful summer and en-joying the cooler weather this fall as you are pre-paring for marching band competitions and the All-District and State band competitions.

I would like to thank everyone who participated in Flute Day 2012! The feedback that I received from attendees was all positive remarks! I would like to give a special thank you to the FSSL board members for making that event such a success as well as all of the performers and clini-cians for contributing their time and expertise for this event. Please join us again for Flute Day 2013 as plans are well underway. This event will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2013 on the campus of SIU Edwardsville. Our featured guest artist for this event is St. Louis Symphony flutist, Jennifer Nitchman. Also, don’t forget to mark your calen-dars for Saturday, March 23, 2013, as Mark Sparks will be performing Christopher Rouse’s Concerto for Flute. The Quarterly Newsletter of the Flute Society of Saint Louis Issue #6, Fall 2012

-Why did you choose to play the flute? The instrument was really chosen for me by my par-ents... But I think a great questions is why I chose to stick with it, as I almost switched instruments or quit several times. But I could never seem to put it down long. I was and still am drawn to the FEELING of playing it - not any music specifically, but the way the instrument vibrates in my fingers, and the sound vibrates through my whole body. I feel like I resonate with the sound. -When did you begin playing the flute?I began playing in fifth grade, or 1992, but feel like I’m just now starting to learn it. I had a great start in the Edwardsville, IL, band program, and was lucky to study with some of St Louis’ best flute teachers (includ-ing Marie Jureit-Beamish, Wendy Hymes, and Erica Day!). -Do you have any musical highlights you would like to share and/or what is your most notable or personally satisfying accomplishment? As faculty at the Pennsylvania Academy of Music, I would often times do small performances with my stu-dents. On a significant concert, for a ticketed audience, I had two of my high school seniors perform on stage with me. I arranged a version of Boehm’s Nel Cor Piu, which at times featured all three of us individually as soloists. I was so proud to see and hear them play, not just as my students, but as my budding colleagues. When I see the success in my students is really when I step back and say, WOW!-Do you have a favorite practice routine? Can you describe it?I like to practice upside down, backwards, inside-out, and any other way I can think to play. By that, I mean I try to practice all of the hard stuff away from the music and in as many variations as I can create - often writing little etudes with tricky runs or making it into some-thing fun to “trick” myself into learning it. I also love scale patterns.-Describe any other hobbies you have. When I’m not fluting, I’m either doing yoga or doing something active outdoors. I’m actually a yoga teacher and incorporate a lot of physical consideration in my flute playing and teaching.

-What is your favorite style of music to listen to? to perform?I like music that is programmatic or even literally de-scriptive, from any period; I find music with dialogue moves me the most.-Describe your musical background.I grew up in the Edwardsville school district and was active in the IMEA ensembles, went to college at the University of Louisville, and then on to grad school as a teaching assistant at the University of Kansas. While finishing my DMA, I took a full-time teaching gig at the Pennsylvania Academy of Music, where I also performed with the Harrisburg Symphony, as prin-cipal flute of the Lancaster Chamber Orchestra, and as a founding member of the NakedEye New Music Ensemble and the Triune Trio. I then worked for one year at Western Illinois University, which is what brought me back home to be near family and to be my own boss. I now freelance and operate my own music studio.-Do you have any advice for aspiring flutists?Take a few minutes to think of what you LOVE about the flute. Write that down and glue it to the inside of your flute case. Say those words OUT LOUD each and EVERY time you take your flute out of the case, before you play a note (it will make each practice more enjoyable). Say them before you put your flute away (especially if you’re about to pack up frustrated). Say them before each performance. No musician is perfect -we all have bad days- but remembering why you love to play will make every moment a success and make the process more authentic and personal.
