INSTRUCTIONS OF USEThe spacer bar and sling conforms to the following regulations: EN 1498: 2006 / CE / Medical Device Regulation 93/42/EEC. The Crane sling kit has been rated to a SWL 500 kg (78 stone / 1102 lb), each stirrup has been rated to a SWL 100kg (16 stone / 220lb) The Crane Sling and Stirrups are intended for hoisting by crane or rope and pulley. The handles are to assist with getting the sling into place and manoeuvring the individual/casualty before lifting. Safe working loads apply when lifting forces are attached to the appropriate steel points.

Moving bariatric individuals has special problems and careful planning and risk assessment is needed.

Placing a bariatric individual on their back may not be possible because of health or location problems. In some cases this can cause serious respiratory difficulty that may be fatal. If in a seated position, maintain the individual in that position. What comes in the kit • Super bariatric sized sling• 2 x stirrups• Dignity sheet• 6 x adjustable anchor straps• 12 x carabiners / connectors,• X-shaped safety security strap• Large tubular slide sheet• Set of 8 orange extension handles• Bugg strap• Carry bag• Two-piece spacer bar

The Crane Sling and accompanying devices are intended to be used by professionals fully trained in the relevant rescue and manual handling techniques.

TASK• Explain to the individual what you

propose to do.

Individual• Assess the capability of the individual;

what assistance, if any, they can give. Identify relevant health issues.

Load• Assess the safe working load (SWL). • Determine if the use of a slide sheet is

appropriate. • Determine how many operatives will

be involved and identify the individual who will take the lead.

• Ensure that each member of the team is aware of what she/he is required to do.

Environment• Assess the location, determine what

physical obstructions there are, will certain members of the team have to step over or around an obstruction, what is the nature of the floor; slippery, sticky, uneven, deep carpet.

• Be aware of the space needed for the individual’s knees and feet.

Preparation (T.I.L.E.)

The Crane Sling and accompanying devices are intended to be used by professionals fully trained in the relevant rescue and manual handling techniques.

All connecting devices such as ropes, adjustable anchor straps, carabiners/screw-gate connectors, Stainless Steel Delta Triangles and Stainless-steel click lock buckles with adjuster used with this equipment must be suitably certified for the purpose.

Place the crane sling behind the person’s back bringing the person forward if necessary. The surface with the label should be away from the body.

Push the sling down as far as possible so that the V-shaped cut is near the base of the spine. The green positioning Bugg strap may help. This can be inserted by gently pushing from one side, then attaching orange extension handles to each end.

The sling can be inserted with the assistance of the slide sheet. Edge the slide sheet beneath the individual using a sawing motion from the shoulders downwards, then feed the sling between the layers of the slide sheet.

Remove the slide sheet and bring the two elongated parts down to either side of the thighs. Lean the individual slightly to one side if appropriate, tuck the sling partly under the hip.

Raising each leg in turn, bring one of the elongated parts beneath both thighs and pull through to bring the coloured handle to meet the other handle and webbing of the same colour.

NOTE: The green Bugg strap may help to raise the thighs while passing the sling underneath.

Repeat the procedure from the other side taking the elongated part under that already in place and again bring the handle through to meet the other handle and webbing of the same colour. Both yellow handles should be held together and joined with the padded fabric, securing with Velcro; in the same way both blue handles should be held together and secured with Velcro. Link a carabiner/connector to the rear (shoulder) steel triangle that is attached to the yellow webbing, and do the same with the rear steel triangle that is attached to the blue webbing. Link the two steel triangles attached to the yellow webbing at the thigh together with a carabiner/connector, repeat this with the two steel triangles attached to the blue webbing at the other thigh. Four adjustable anchor straps can now be attached to all four carabiners / connectors (two at shoulder height and two at the thighs), a carabiner/connector can now be attached to the other end of the adjustable anchor strap, ready for attaching to the spacer bar. If required, in preparation for hoisting, secure the individual with the red X-shaped safety security strap to the click lock buckles on sling and pull ends snug.

Optional: The orange extension handles permit additional operatives to be involved. Two orange extension handles can be attached to each of the coupled sets of coloured handles, providing four grasping points at the front. Four further orange extension handles can be attached to the rear handles if necessary. To attach the extension handle, pass through the handle on the sling and back through itself and pull tight as a larks foot knot.

BEWARE: application of larks foots knot to the extension handles will reduce the safe working load of the handles.

Preparing the spacer bar The spacer bar has a largecentral ring (and bolt) for linkage to a crane or a rope and pulley system. The four arms can be rotatedaround this point. Each arm has three holes to attach the sling with connectors/carabiners.

When using the two piece spacerbar, this must first be assembled. Place the two pairs of arms together at 90° to each other, with the central hub of each pair slotted together.

Remove the locking pin and nutfrom the bolt and pass the bolt through both central hubs from the top. Reattach the nut and insert the locking pin. Attach the central ring to a crane or to a rope and pulley system.

Attaching crane sling to the spacerbar. Position the bar directly above the individual and bring down as close as possible but not coming into contact with the person.

Fasten the two hook-and-loop strapson the head support to the bar.

Attach all four adjustable anchorstraps by using the carabiners/ connectors to the distal holes in the spacer bar. Attach rearmost adjustable anchor straps with a carabiner/ connector to the two rear-directed arms of the spacer bar, attach both thigh adjustable anchor straps with a carabiner/connector to the two forward-directed arms of the spacer bar. Adjust length of adjustable anchor straps if required.

If/when there is sufficient space, place each foot into a stirrup, bring the stirrup ends together and attach the paired steel triangles by a carabiner/connector to an adjustable anchor straps and then to the spacer bar.Shorten straps to support feet/legs as required.

With or without stirrups attached, raise the spacer bar slowly, constantly monitoring the individual, the whole time. If the bar tilts excessively, lower and reattach to the distal holes and lift again.

Move, then lower the individual intothe new location, monitoring the individual the whole time.

Removing the crane sling kit: When the load is completely removed from the spacer bar, remove the connectors and head support straps. Free all connections and move the spacer bar away from the individual.

Free the rings and the colourcoordinated handles at the thighs, turnthe elongated part of the sling with oneof the coloured handles back beneathitself and take out from beneaththe thighs taking care not to causeskin shearing. Repeat with the otherelongated part. Leaning the individualforward, remove the sling from behind.Remove stirrups.
