Driving Operational Excellence Meet the Author of this New Dynamic Book

22

First off I would like to take the chance to mention that the Central Indiana Chapter of APICS has once again achieved the APICS Chapter Benchmarking and Reporting Platinum award. Chapter Management

Excellence is an integral component to enhancing the member experience. Successful APICS chapters provide their members with opportunities for stellar education, career development, and networking. The APICS Chapter Benchmarking and Recognition (CBAR) program recognizes chapters that have exceeded minimum standards and exemplify excellence in overall chapter management. We are proud to announce the APICS Central Indiana Chapter received the 2011 CBAR Platinum Award designation, an admirable accomplishment for an APICS chapter.

As a member of an APICS Platinum Award Winning Chapter, the CBAR designation signifies your chapter’s commitment to providing an exceptional membership experience.

Focusing back on the title of this month’s article for those of you who were not able to attend the International Conference this year in historic Pittsburgh, following is a little recap. This year’s conference title was “Achieving Sustainable Productivity, meeting customer demand in an unpredictable world” and is something I am sure we all struggle with on a daily basis in our companies. Although not all companies have weathered the storm completely it is very clear that today’s Supply Chain is no longer in the shadows at companies as it was in the past.

In today’s Supply Chain you the professionals are being required to do more with less; fewer people, fewer resources, and largely reduced lead-times. All this while we are required to continue to deliver high-quality products that meet and exceed customer requirements. Learning paths were structured around risk and change management, production, inventory, supply chain and operations management, and trends in productivity and sustainability.

To keep the conference summary as brief as possible I would like to share the following Six Secrets of “Achieving Sustainable Performance” as presented by Jim McDonald, former Starbucks CEO from 2002-2008. These principles of leadership can be applied in more areas than just Operations.

1. “Make it stick”. When leading a group down the path of change one should assure that their message/vision is memorable.

2. “Never be bigger that the front line”. Personally I relate this back to some core leadership values in the sense that you are only as successful as your team. It is the job of the leader to make people dance that make the numbers dance.

3. “Every minute you stay in your office you are useless”. I am sure there are leaders out there that can

deliver reams of supporting documentation of the value they are adding while held up in their office. The premise behind this, also coined by Jack Welch of GE fame, is that one should not be afraid to go where they have never been before.

4. “Communicate in an understandable language”.

5. “Encourage risk taking”. In order to evolve to meet new challenges there needs to be “freedom to fail”. Obviously within reason that is.

6. “Celebrate the success of others”. People like to succeed; however, their celebrations may be different. Sometimes a mere 10 seconds of a comment like “good job on that presentation today John” can go a long ways toward keeping John working toward “Achieving Sustainable Performance.”

The CIND chapter board was very well represented this year with nearly half our board in attendance. In addition to attending the normal conference schedule we also attended APICS Volunteer Leadership Workshop. The VLW provides chapter leaders the opportunity to benchmark each other’s chapters and share ideas that can lead to improvements for our local members. In addition we were able to attend several sessions covering corporate best practices and future changes that will continue to keep APICS at the forefront of all educational and membership affiliations serving the Operations community.

Moving on, don’t forget to sign up for the November 10th PDM which will be another excellent event in which our speaker will be Ron Crabtree, author of “Driving Operational Excellence”. The discussion and book center around Lean and Six Sigma methods and strategies you can employ to improve your organizations chances of Sustainability. You definitely don’t want to miss this event as there will be books available for purchase in addition to a book signing period after the discussion. CIND will also be raffling off a few of these books to those in attendance.

Don’t forget to join our social networks on Linked In (APICS-CIND), and Twitter (@apics_cind).

Finally, the tank is full and the motor is running so let’s get going. The answer to the initial question of NOW WHAT comes from you the chapter membership, we’re waiting to hear from you. By the way, this is not really the boards chapter but in fact YOUR chapter.

Keep the feedback coming….you can send your thoughts and concerns to [email protected], [email protected], or any other Board member of your choice (apics-cind.org/board).

Cheers, Charles (Chip) [email protected]

Exciting Changes Coming for APICS Corporate WebsiteI had the privilege of attending the 2011 APICS International Conference and Expo in Pittsburgh in October. The day before the conference, APICS chapter Board Members are encouraged to attend the Volunteer Leadership Workshop, which is designed to inform and educate Board Members on the updates and changes that are happening within APICS over the coming year. One of the most excited changes on the horizon (granted, I am biased) is the modernization of the APICS corporate website (www.apics.org). Out with the old – unappealing colors, boring columnar blocks of text, and hard-to-navigate links and in with the new – smooth color schemes and buttons, 21st-century features and animation, and navigation menus that actually make sense. This new design will help make it easier to login to the corporate website, with a login feature right at the top of the page. It also allows the user easier access to products and services offered by APICS.While the Chapter site (www.apics-cind.org) will not be updated automatically with the corporate site, I, along with the rest of the CIND Board, will be working with APICS corporate over the coming year to integrate the new website to our chapter website as soon as possible. Look for the new corporate site at the end of the year and for the new Central Indiana site sometime in 2012. To help us figure out how to make our site better for you, please take this one-minute survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/RD87S5W.Stay Tuned! Sam Kingdon VP, Information Technology

6 THE PRODUCTION LINE • NOVEMBER 2011

Jim Tilton has worked at Rolls-Royce Corporation for 32 years.

When did you join APICS? Why did you decide to join? I first became involved with APICS when I was an ERP Systems super user. This was 20+ years into my career and after I had left the Manufacturing part of Operations. My boss put on my PDR I should consider professional certification.

How does the APICS body of knowledge apply to your work? APICS is the “Association for Operations and Supply Chain Management”. As the ERP Super user I appreciated my APICS background as it underscored how all the distinct disciplines of any given enterprise are linked together.

I also feel the overall scope of the APICS Body of Knowledge transcends the Operations and Supply Chain disciplines into anywhere there is a flow of activity; i.e. the office as one example. Services and workload can be measured to better realize where capacity constraints and opportunities exist. Tell me about some of the rewarding activities or experiences you have had as an APICS member.I’m sure most all of us who share in the APICS Body of Knowledge have similar success stories of inventory / productivity improvements, etc. However, the most rewarding experience was and still is volunteering on my local APICS Chapter board. Through my involvement with my APICS local Chapter I have extended my professional network be one that is literally “Global” in scope compared to what is was prior to my involvement with APICS. Those who know me know I work for an international company headquartered outside the U.S. and establishing a global network should be easy. But my global network extends far beyond that of my corporate network. I now serve on the APICS Great Lake District staff as well and continue to develop my APICS network of friends and colleagues.

Have you attended any APICS Conferences, District meetings, etc.? If so, what do you think of these events? As a (past) chapter president, current board member, District Staff I have had the pleasure to attend several of the aforementioned

events and have participated in each on some level. In 2010 I was invited to present at the Volunteer Leadership Workshop in Las Vegas at the 2010 International Conference.Every one of these events provides some opportunity for enrichment, be it either professional, personal, or as I have found, both!

As an APICS volunteer, how has volunteering made a difference in your career? Would you recommend volunteering to others? Why? As stated earlier the most rewarding experience was and still is volunteering on my local APICS Chapter board. To quote Harriet Naylor- Volunteering can be an exciting, growing, enjoyable experience. It is truly gratifying to serve a cause, practice one's ideals, work with people, solve problems, see benefits, and know one had a hand in them.

I have found this to be very true…..

Are you APICS certified? If so, why do you believe certification is important? Would you consider obtaining another certification? I am a CPIM – Certified in Production and Inventory Management. I intend to also pursue my Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP).

A real example for me was when I had the sheer pleasure of working with other APICS Professionals to resolve an inventory management issue. Because we all understood the issues, spoke the same language, etc., we were able to develop viable solutions in less time with less disruption than some of us had experienced previously when working with others who were not at the same levels of understanding the bigger pictures…..

For human interest, what are some of your hobbies or interests outside the work environment? I like home improvement, woodworking projects. I remodeled my previous home by redesigning the flow and added an extra master bath. In my current home I have re-done two bathrooms, built an entertainment center, bookcase headboard for the master, and a Wi-Fi enabled office for my wife, (a middle school teacher), and me. We like traveling, (my wife prefers the car), otherwise we fly “Xanax-Air”

Anything else you’d like to add… I have been sky diving a couple of times and hope one day to find the courage and time to take on… Golf!

Meet this month:Jim Tilton, CPIMSenior Advisor

7 THE PRODUCTION LINE • NOVEMBER 2011

I am Mollie Earnhart and currently serving as the Vice President of Administration for the Central Indiana Chapter of APICS. I have been a member of APICS for over 13 years.

Why did you join APICS?

I enjoy the topics at PDMs and several seminars. I also enjoy the opportunity to meet other Supply Chain Professionals in the Central Indiana area.

Can you tell us about some of your rewarding activities or experiences you have had as an APICS member?

I have two experiences that come to mind. The most recent was two years ago when I was a mentor to a student at Purdue University. The experience was very rewarding. If you have not been part of a mentoring program I would highly recommend doing so. The second was the years I held the office of Vice President of Company Coordinators. It allowed me to get to know many professionals in the Central Indiana area. The program promoted activities of the Chapter

Have you attended any APICS Conferences or District meetings? If so what did you think of the events? What kind of things did you learn about and what have you experienced while there?

I have attended two International Conferences. The International Conference is an amazing experience. There is something going on from the time you get up until you go to bed at night. The topics range from basic subject matter to more advanced topics.

The Conference has plant tours where you can see firsthand experiences from local companies. There is also an Exhibit Hall that attracts the leaders in varies areas of expertise. It is of benefit whether you are going to make a purchase or keeping up with the latest technology. Finally there is something going on each night. A couple of the activities would be a sponsored APICS activity or networking with other professionals in your area. Each of the International Conferences that I have attended I have been able to bring back something that has benefited my company and myself.I have also attended several District meetings. It is an opportunity to share APICS Chapter best practices and also share difficulties. Also included are topics that would improve the individual as well as the APICS Chapter. The District meeting like the CIND Board of Directors meetings is open to all APICS members. It you have not attended a meeting I would encourage you to do so.

As an APICS Volunteer how has Volunteering made a difference in your career? Would you recommend volunteering to others? Why?

Being a volunteer with APICS has allowed me to meet and get to know individuals that I would otherwise not have met. It has allowed me to share experiences with others that have the same situations and can relate to the circumstances. Yes I would recommend giving back to your profession. Our Chapter is a volunteer organization. There is a great deal of satisfaction assisting with our Chapter!

For human interest, what are some of your hobbies or interest outside of work?

I am married to my husband Brian. Brian and I have a Beagle mix Cosmo. I volunteer at an Elementary after school as a tutor twice per week. I also enjoy flower gardening.
