This school year is off to a great start! Our young
learners are already stepping up and building their
knowledge! This month, we have a fantastic
opportunity for parents and families to get involved in
literacy. Our Family Reading Night will be October 12
at 6 pm. Come out and join us for literacy activities
and resources, along with a pizza dinner. Another way
to support your learner at home is through Blended
Learning usage. i-Ready Reading and Math and
Achieve 3000 (3rd-5th grade only) are both available
from any computer with internet access. i-Ready also
offers i-PAD apps for families to use on-the-go.

Kindergarten: Kindergarten is making wonderful
progress in our learning! We are continuing to explore our 5
senses in both Reading and Science. To celebrate our learning,
we will have a “5 Senses Walk” as a culminating activity for
our grade level. In math, we are expanding our learning to
count and match objects to 10, counting in different
configurations, and finding hidden partners. We are also
making great progress in Saxon Phonics, where we are
learning our letters, letter sounds, and even blending sounds
to make words! Our literacy centers are in full swing helping
us practice all the skills we’re learning in class. Parents are
always welcome to support our class by volunteering. We’re so
excited about our Kindergarten year!
First Grade: We have many exciting field trips planned
this year. If you haven’t signed up yet to be a volunteer,
please do so at your earliest convenience. We will be having
our first spelling test this Thursday, with both spelling and
Saxon assessments to be given every 5th school day. In
addition, Fry words testing will remain on Fridays. Thank you
for your support in working with your 1st grader.
Upcoming:
Super Scientific Circus at FCCJ – March 9
Second Grade: Happy Fall! Our second grade builders
have been very busy learning at a fast pace with a more rigorous
curriculum. During the month of October, in math, we will be
finishing up our Measurement Unit and beginning Module 3: Place
Value, Counting and Comparing Numbers to 1,000. Ask your child to
tell you about what he/she is learning in school and pay close
attention to their math homework, as it will correlate with it. In
Reading, we will be wrapping up Module 2: Early Asian Civilization
where we have focused on map skills and folktales, and moving on to
Module 3: The Ancient Greek Civilization. We will be focusing on
being able to recount stories, use maps and gain knowledge about a
story by looking at the pictures. Have your child tell you a story using
lots of details. They should be able to give you a visual image, just
from the details that they give.
Our Second Grade team would like to thank all of the parent/
guardian(s) that were able to make it out to this year’s Open House.
We were delighted to meet you all. For those of you who were unable
to come, we look forward to setting up conferences or reaching out to
you in order to know or learn about our expectations for this year.
Thanks for such a great start to the year!
Third Grade: Our 3rd grade mathematicians have com- pleted the first Module of the year. At home students should practice skip counting by 2’s all the way to 12’s to keep their math facts fresh in their minds. We will be moving on to our next unit on Place Value and Problem Solving with Units of Measure. Students will be exploring measurement using kilo- grams, grams, liters, milliliters, and intervals of time in minutes. At home help your child by practicing telling time to the minute with a real clock. Third grade is reading around the world and continuing to learn about the power of reading. We have recently been digging into some great text such as Thank you Mr. Falker and The Boy Who Loved Words while working hard to categorize details. In cen- ters, students have been knocking out Achieve lessons. This month we will be able to see how our students are advancing on the program. At home please remember to spend twenty minutes reading each night.
Fourth Grade: Students continue to use the book Love
That Dog to learn about poetry. Classes have been working on
summarizing sections of the book using evidence from the
novel. They will be choosing a poet to study and research
whose poems have inspired them. Literary terms to describe
the characteristics of selected poet’s will be part of the
Performance Task. In addition, students will be writing their
own poem that correlates with the style and structure of their
poet. The last day of the quarter is October 13, students will
be wrapping up their poetry unit at that time.
In math, students will begin our module on multiplication and
division. Students will learn how to multiply a two-digit
number by a one-digit number (example: 27 x 4). Students will
also learn how to multiply a three-digit number by a one-digit
number (example: 376 x 4). Towards the middle of the month,
we will begin working on division and learning how to divide
bigger numbers. In science, students will be learning about the
three states of matter and the properties of matter.
Fifth Grade: We have completed all baseline
testing and are diving into the curriculum with
excitement and enthusiasm. In Reading, we are
still working on the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights (UDHR) and will start our first
novel; Esperanza Rising on Monday, October
2. All the work we have done so far will help the
students better understand the novel. Students
are all expected to pass 2 Achieve lessons weekly
and 2 i-Ready lessons. In Math students are
working on decimals. They are learning how to
add, subtract, divide and multiply decimals. In
Science students are working on the States of
Matter and classifying matter. Please continue to
sign students’ planners daily.
