(2018). The math is right! The Australian Mathematics Teacher, 74(3), 9- 14. -The first activity below involves students guessing the prices of 10 items. I have included some sample items, but any items can be used. If the prices are over $650 the scale on the graph can be changed. Students are shown ten items one at a time and fill in the table with their guesses. Then the teacher can provide the actual prices. Students make a scatterplot of their points and the activity continues with the provided questions.

1) With your spaghetti piece, show the line of a person that was a perfect guesser;

where every guessed price matched the actual priceHow many of your points fall on the spaghetti line? What does this mean?

2) Where do you see the points where you guess was too high? Too low?

3) Describe any patterns or trends to your scatterplot.

4) Draw in an “estimated” line of best fit that fits your data well? How does it

compare to the line y = x ?

5) Produce an equation for the line of best fit. Use your line of best fit equation to

predict the actual price of an item if you guessed $350.

6) What does the slope of your line of best fit mean in this context?

7) What does your y-intercept mean in this context?

1.Whatdecisionshouldthecontestantmake?Expected value is the long-run average value or put another way it is the probability-weighted average of all possible values. It is calculated as the sum of all possible values each multiplied by the probability of its occurrence. 2.Whatistheexpectedvalueforthisgame? a)Whatistheprobabilityofwinningthecarandalltheprizes? b)Whatistheprobabilityofwinningnothingthen?3.Basedontheexpectedvaluewhatdecisionshouldthecontestantmake?

Punch a Bunch Game

The number of each value on the punchboard is in parentheses; so there are four values of

$5,000.

$25,000 (1); $10,000 (2); $5,000 (4); $2,500 (8); $1,000 (10); $500 (10); $250 (10);

$100 (5).

(1) What is the probability of winning each money amount with one punch?

(2) Which amount has the greatest probability? The least?

(3) What is the expected value for this game with one punch? Right down an estimate

before figuring it out.

(4) Suppose a contestant has passed on $1000 and $500. They get $2,500 on their

third punch. Should they keep this or see what value is in their fourth punch?
