I have been pretty much on-the-go since the beginning of April. Af- ter returning from Maui, I imme- diately took off for Peru and Ec- uador. What an incredible trip! The weather was perfect, and I got many great pictures of Machu Pic- chu. The Galapagos portion of the trip was equally impressive. Daily hikes and snorkeling al- lowed our group to experience the unique wildlife of the islands. I was astounded that the wildlife completely ignored humans. Birds would walk right up to your feet and check you out. No more than a couple of feet away, sea lions, marine iguanas, albatross, boobies (the feathered avian variety), and hawks co-mingled with us on an equal basis. Any- where else wildlife would have fled in terror. I got some fantastic photos. No need for a telephoto lens, I almost needed a macro. I arrived home at the start of June, just in time for the Trailblazer dance. Ross Howell kept Trailblazers and guests thoroughly entertained at our June dance. There was a great turnout considering that summer usually marks the beginning of travel and vacations for many. Of course, with Ross calling, I’m sure travel and vacations were temporarily put on hold. Everyone enjoyed his challenging sequences and light-hearted comments. A week later I was in Milwaukee for the AACE con- vention and had the opportunity to dance to Ross again. Going solo, I had concerns about finding a (Continued on page 5) [President’s Message] Volume XXX Number 4 Aug/Sep 2011 THE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE BY John & Carolyn Melstrom Aug 6, 7, 2011 Rob French/C. the other … Perfect! We’re all in the same square we were in a minute ago. Another miracle! Well, you got me confused. A2 Actually it was Load the Boat … I didn’t mean Load the Titanic! I don’t know what you guys did, but it sure was pretty. It was a Chain Reaction … they just added it to the list today. I get into trouble quickly. Promenade, either way … it’s the same distance. OK Barbara, you’re in for a treat now. Dancing with those seven guys is like herding cats. It was Peel the Top … the one that’s on the Plus list. Don’t do that again! C2 Scatter Scoot Chain Thruer’s Motivate … now that’s a long one. There goes my pilot square! Wait … Can I get a picture of that formation? Please … I’m in charge here now. It’s left … it’s the arm that’s on the other side! I’ll call it again so you can see where I made the mistake. I’ll explain it to you later. That’s pretty, but it’s not correct. It’s not nice to stand on your phantoms. Oh, I did leave out a call … but it was just a little one. What are you doing? … Did I say it was over? I’m only here to please.

Caller Quotes June 4-5, 2011 Ross Howell

C1 Push her around, boys, like you wish you could. Girls, look at his chest … don’t laugh! Boys, look at her eyes. Don’t panic! Don’t panic! You’re fine. Well, you were. I think you need to rethink that back there. Oh, you have nine people in your square. I have some nine-person material, but I’ll have to dig it out. They were very slick about screwing that up. Excuse me. Do we have three girls on this one side? They may be right … or they all may all be wrong. The Devil made me do it. You’re making me work way too hard. You’re in your Block, five in yours and three in

CALLER FOR TRAILBLAZER DANCE

July 2011

Trailblazers was dark in

July.

This happy group of Trailblazer members all attended the AACE dance in Milwaukee June 15 thru 18. There were a few more who attended but they escaped the camera man.

I already asked. No, Gary does not hire out.

partner. However, there were plenty of people available, and I had a terrific time. It was also nice to be able to see friends from other parts of the country, including many that I had met in Mesa Arizona earlier this year. AACE provides a con-centrated program of Challenge calling in four halls. With the likes of Sandie Bryant, Vic Ceder, Barry Clasper, Ross Howell, Todd Fellegy, Lee Kopman, Anne Uebelacker, and Lynette Belini, how can one go wrong? What strikes me is that nearly every one of these callers calls for the Trailblazers during the course of a year. We are indeed fortunate. It was like a whole year’s worth of outstanding callers concentrated in several days. Over four squares of Trailblazers attended AACE so our presence was felt in every hall.. Af-ter AACE many of our members continued on to the National Square Dance Convention in Detroit or to Kirkwood. Like AACE, PACE Extrava-ganza, McCloud, or any of the other weekend fes-tivals, dancers come away on a high note, renewed with confidence. I sure did! I am happy to report that several Trailblazer mem-bers are on the mend. Cynthia Casebolt is recov-ering from recent surgery and Karl Springer, our webmaster, is recovering from a recent heart at-tack. Thanks go to Tom Roberts who has stepped in to help Karl with publishing this newsletter. Trailblazers were dark in July. Our August 6-7 weekend is coming up with Rob French and C.J. Smith. They will certainly provide an entertaining weekend, so be sure to put it on your calendars. In September we are look forward to the smooth calling of Bronc Wise.
