Since its establishment in the year 1948, our Society has grown year after year and has done marvelous job in disseminating Geotechnical knowledge within India and also across the world. Our members have represented IGS at international level and have contributed to important projects around the world. India has embarked on massive Energy, Irrigation and Infrastructure development plan to make our country Industrial Superpower within next few decades. The plan includes construction of Thermal & Nuclear power plants, Highways & Expressways, Underground metros, and Dams….. all requiring Geotechnical expertise for their successful and safe installations. The country also faces problems of recurring earthquakes, landslides, floods and other natural calamities requiring ingenious disaster mitigation techniques and solutions to minimize risk to human life and property. Further, if we look it broadly, there is a saying: Roti-Kapada & Makan i.e. Food- Clothes & Shelter; these are humans' basic needs. Therefore, as long as human race exists, demand for shelter and infrastructure will remain. Thus, requirement of geotechnical expertise will be never ending. Let us also think Outside the Box. So there is going to be plenty of opportunities for all future engineers. For success of any project, three phases are important: 1st Design, 2nd Construction and 3rd Instrumentation & Monitoring. We are fairly good with 1st phase, weak with 2nd phase due to poor or deliberate poor QC while the 3rd phase is hardly given any serious consideration. Thus there is a general concern with regard to the quality of work being produced and this is being echoed by most of us time and again. The quality related problem is faced by other professions also. We all need to stop to be too greedy about money and start worrying about the safety and economy of our structures. This can happen fast if we common people change our perception and start respecting honesty and integrity of our citizens more than their wealth. Friends, when I took over as IGS President in December last year, I had promised that we shall continue with the usual routine activities of the Society but we shall also make reforms and modifications in our procedures wherever needed and also take new initiatives in IGS activities. Because of the faith you have reposed in me as your President and the support, cooperation and advice I have received from the excellent team you have given to me-the Executive Committee members; I have been able to move to great distance in fulfilling my promise during 1st year of my tenure. I ask you to refer to my report included in 55th AGM notice for the details. Among new initiatives, two are latest: (1) Young Geotechnical Engineers (YGE) are the future of IGS. To encourage them to get involved and participate in Geotechnical research and field work, biannual Best Paper Awards especially for YGE are now instituted. The first set of even-year Awards totaling eight (8) will be given during IGC-2014. I ask all YGE to participate and submit their papers when called for. (2) We are going to issue ID cards to our members starting from year- 2014. Details are provided in this News Bulletin. The last but not the least, the magnificent IGC-2013 was organized by the Roorkee Chapter during 22-24 December, 2013. The Conference was a grand success. I am confident that after three days of deliberations, the participants went home enriched with further knowledge, having enjoyed good hospitality and made new friends. Congrats to all the members of IGC-2013 organizing committee. Prof. G. N. Gandhi [email protected]
