WORK.LIFE BALANCE

The attainment of worklife balance continues to be the mythical qualiry standard forindividuals in the workforce and the organizations that employ them. In the 2007 Soci-ery for Human Resource Management's (SHRM) Job Satisfaction Survey Report, "flexi-biliry to balance life and work issues" ranks as "very imporrant" for 52 percent of allrespondents and 48 percent of HR professionals. For individual workers, work-life bal-ance ranked fourth in importance, behind compensation, bene6rs, and job securiry eachof which can be argued as a contributor to achieving work-life balance. Despite rankingas "important" or "very important" in each satisfaction survey since 2002, SHRMrePorts that-the responsiveness oforganizations to these issues has only increased slighdyfrom 2006.r

Traditionally considered a "mommy issue," work-life balance is now considered astandard for any individual desiring to be successful ar work while also maintaining a

personal life separate from it, despite marital or parental status. The terms work-lifeconfict (negative interactions between roles) and work-life enrichment are often usedinterchangeably with worklife balance, but are actua.lly subsets of ir

Work-lile Balance

Vork-life balance has traditionally been defined in terms of equilibrium. A personachieved balance when equal time, energy, and enjoymenr was expended and/or gainedfrom both the work and family roles.2 Recenrly, however, this definition has beenexpanded to move beyond "equality" as the determinant of balance . In this updateddefinition, balance occurs when an individual is actively engaged in both roles, withoutsacrificing one for the benefit of the other. Balance becomes a true interaction betweenroles, rather tlan a batde between them.3
