Student Tour Guide Orientation/Open House By Shirlee Rodriguez
It was a great day!! The Boosters of Old Town Tour Guide Orientation/Open House on June 15th included:
friendly people; an informational tour of Old Town led by Joe Vasquez, Mary Jones, and Bert Randlett; a
great slide show produced by Bob Jones; and a delicious lunch prepared by Mary Ellen Young. Old Town
State Historic Park and Boosters of Old Town sent out a call for volunteers who would be interested in
becoming student tour guides. We were so happy to have five volunteers join our experienced tour guides
in the events of the day. We welcome these enthusiastic volunteers as they begin their journey towards
becoming a part of our tour guide team.
On Saturday, June 18th, Old Town tour guide, Ruth French, provided further training for volunteers,
specifically focusing on techniques and strategies for working with elementary school students. Her
orientation included an informal presentation, walking tour, and a question and answer session.
The San Diego Unified School District‟s 4th
Grade Program in Old Town will not continue next school
year. Because of that loss, many schools will need to arrange individual field trips for the “Old Town
Experience.” Therefore, it is very important for BOOT to be prepared to provide service to many more
students, continuing to provide a quality program that brings the wonders of Old Town alive! We still need
MORE volunteers to join our Old Town Student Tour Guide training program!
To learn more about this program and other volunteer opportunities, please contact
Joe Vasquez, Volunteer Coordinator, at 619-952-3897 OR [email protected].

Treasurer’s Notes By Deanna Turton
The month of May was full of nice surprises....a small rise in
the daily average in the donation boxes, rising sales in the
BOOT Store, and almost $500 taken in for BOOT tours. All
of this is a sure sign that the summer influx of tourists is
almost here. Since expenses were also lower than usual, it is
not surprising that BOOT came out ahead $2599.59, after all
the bills were paid.
On the expense side of the ledger, there were only three
funding categories that were over $200.00: Purchases to
increase the BOOT Store inventory - $1768.47, a new
irrigation system and summer vegetables in the Stewart
Garden - $297.73, and care and feeding of the burros -
$592.65.
All five other spending categories were $200 or less.
President’s Notes By Jeanne Ferrel
Summertime…A time for lemonade.
This could be hard times for the State Park…
It could be, “We can‟t do it. We have very limited funds.”
It could be a real “Downer!” It could be “The Lemon!!!” But not in this Park!!!
We choose to take the lemon and…you know the rest…MAKE LEMONADE!!! We choose to say
“Yes, we can work together and get it done!” Under the directions of Karen Beery, Interpretive and
Education Manager and Rich Dennison, Historic Sector Visitor Services Superintendent, we are
moving forward to facilitate work in many areas. From mending picket fences to whitewashing adobe
structures, we are providing funds and assisting where needed.
BOOT and the BOOT Volunteers are looking for anyone who wants to be of service to the
community. We are recruiting Tour Guides for our Tour Program. If you like people and history,
come join an elite group of guides who become friends and “family.” WE NEED YOU!
This year‟s Fourth of July celebration will be spectacular. This family event features something for
everyone. Read about it in this issue and don‟t forget to bring your cake for the cake walk!
Enjoy this summer with friends and family. Think about joining BOOT with every glass of lemonade.

California State Parks completed critical repairs to
the original 1830s Machado y Stewart adobe.
Historian Victor Walsh, contractor Charlie Merino,
Christopher Fuerstnau, Therese Muranaka, and Andy
Bashore exhibited great leadership in planning,
researching, and executing the repairs. The project
was funded with Department Cultural Resources
Management Program grant funds, a highly
competitive process.
The scope included re-blocking and replastering the
damaged wall on the east end, inspecting and putting
in two cobblestoned drains, replacing/repairing
damaged adobe pavers at the entrance and on both
elevated platforms in front of windows for public
viewing.
This project demonstrated great teamwork and
commitment to descendants and the community to
preserve early San Diego history.

In the 1850s Doña Juana de Dios Machado Alípas de Wrightington was a local woman, born when
San Diego belonged to Spain, lived while it belonged to Mexico and eventually became part of
America. A strong woman, she raised 6 children, served as a foster mother, translated 3 languages and
served as a nurse to Father Ubach. In the early 1850s, she made what is considered the earliest known
quilt to be made in California. With influences from Boston Whalers, a mixture of international
sailors, American traders, Hawaiian quilters, her own mestizo culture and the local religious
community, Juana created a quilt completely her own.

THANK YOU TO OUR CORPORATE MEMBERS!
Some Patches of History (cont’d)…
The Old Town San Diego Quilt Guild is in the process of re-creating this quilt. The original is
located at the San Diego History Center, formerly the San Diego Historical Society. In the process
we are learning about her and the people of Old Town San Diego. Come join us as we explore the
wonderful mysteries of the quilt and Juana Machado. When it is complete it will be 81” x 62” just
like hers. As part of our interpretive living history program we will be working on the quilt, while
dressed in 19th
century attire, in the Park for all to come and watch. Rosie‟s Calico Cupboard
graciously donated the fabric. We will keep in contact with Rosie‟s and the History Center as our
progress develops.
We know people helped Juana Machado work on her quilt. There are stitches and fabric cut-outs
that are different and indicate different hands. Unfortunately, we do not know who these people
were. Just think, maybe an Estudillo, Pedrorena, Robinson or Bandini! So this time we have kept a
journal of everyone who has sewn on the quilt. In this journal we ask for the visitor‟s names, where
they come from, age of the younger visitors, and ask them to add any comments they wish. The
results we received are phenomenal. Here are some of the entries:
People from as far away as France, Germany, El Salvador, and Canada (to mention a few), as well
as from Mexico and our U.S. states have all participated in this project. Ages range from 4 to 65!
Some things people have to say:
“the conversation with the quilters was so informative and confortable”
“I made stitches in the quilt for the very first time. How very cool!”
“To Juana Maria Machado and the women who are keeping her legacy alive”
“This has been one of my most rewarding days while working in OTSDSHP.”
“So much fun – everyone so friendly and inviting!”
“Happy to add a few stitches to a beautiful project”
“It was fun working on the quilt, even if I will never live it down with my mother.”
“This quilt is sewn with love and appreciation for those who came before us.”
“I‟ll treasure my „small part‟ and share the experience with my mother who is a wonderful
quilter.”
“Thank goodness I don‟t have to wear what I sew! Thanks for the opportunity to appreciate my
life”
”What a great experience with my daughter”
Come join us and see what these people are talking about! We meet every Wednesday in Old Town
San Diego State Historic Park at the Casa de Estudillo from 1:00 to 3:30 pm, except in bad weather
or due to a special event. We also meet with the Fiber Arts guild every 3rd
Saturday from 1-3:30
pm. We would love to have you pick up the needle even if for just a few stitches.
Next month I will have part II, a look at the Civil War Tribute Quilt and related activities the quilt
guild will be doing over the next year.

From the Editor’s Desk…
How time flies when you are having a good time!
As you may know, the BOOT Board has been working
steadily to clean out the old and bring in the new. Much of
my time was spent sorting out and organizing the past
Poppy Papers. In so doing, I realized that this is the 36th
monthly Poppy Paper that I have edited…eeek!
Unbelievable how three years can pass so quickly!!!
If anyone would like to take a look back…some of the past
Poppy Papers go WAY BACK…stop into the BOOT
Office, at the top of the stairs in the Robinson-Rose. They
are located in 3-ring binders on the large wooden shelves.
Although I have all of the past three years saved digitally, I
do not have copies of all of the older issues yet. I will soon
be working on scanning the very old issues before the silver
fish have them for lunch.
Happy Independence Day, and Happy
Reading!
