THE POPPY PAPER
January 2012
Official Monthly Publication of the
Boosters of Old Town San Diego State Historic Park
A Non-Profit Organization
Volunteers and BOOT members were acknowledged for their dedication and service during the Volunteer
Appreciation event on Saturday, December 3, 2011. Thanks to the California State Park Foundation, a
luncheon was served to 100 participants at the beautifully restored Cosmopolitan Hotel and Restaurant. The
Cosmopolitan staff served a delicious traditional New England lunch with many 19th
century touches such as
Boston baked beans, pot roast, and steamed cake.
Eighteen prizes were given at the random drawing which had a specially designed card with interpretation to
enable the volunteer to deepen his/her knowledge of the 19th
century. Thank you to The Cosmopolitan Hotel
and Restaurant, Cygnet Theatre, El Fandango Restaurant, and Gum Saan for donating gifts for the special
event. Special Awards were given to the following volunteers: Chris Clark, Blanca Garcia, Becky
Halliburton, Bert Randlett, Patt Seitas, Steve Van Wormer, Caryn Zimmer, and Doug Zimmer.
The dedication and effort of many volunteers helped with the success of large special events such as Ladies
Day, 4th
of July, and Fiestas Patrias. The Old Town San Diego State Historic Park acknowledged all the
guilds, focus groups, and committees for their efforts during the volunteer recognition event. Thanks to all
the staff and volunteers who made the volunteer recognition event a day to remember.
Thanks to all the volunteers who contributed to the
Old Town San Diego State Historic Park Volunteer
Program during 2011. Despite State Park service
reductions, volunteers helped keep the museums open
and provided help in many interpretive programs,
projects and special events throughout the year.

Treasurer's Notes by Deanna Turton
Like the end of the year in times past, fiscal year
2011 is no different. Towards the end of the
year, State Park Staff members tend to spend
down the designated allotments in each of the
various budget categories that BOOT has
authorized.....and I find myself writing a lot of
checks. Therefore, in November, BOOT spent
$2121.22 more than it earned in store sales or
donations. This is not to say that the store is not
doing well...it is!! Nor does it say that donations
are down....they are not!! Donations earned
$65.68 a day during November. That figure is
very good for this time of year.
Expense categories over $200 were:
BOOT store inventory replacement and
supplies - $2708.14
July 4th purchases for next year - $604.21
Living History - $1553.20
Period Attire Bank & Subsidies - $1264.90
(Period Attire Bank Income = $110.00)
Sixteen other spending categories under
$200.00, with three categories close to or
equaling $200.00.
This is also the time of year when I start to
assemble the needed data to complete the tax
forms for FY2011, filing taxes and preparing the
Annual Report in the spring. I am pleased to say
that I am well into this effort, so a timely filing
will once again be possible. I have also
promised to help our BOOT President, Jeanne
Ferrell with the lengthy process of renewing our
contract with the Department of Parks and
Recreation in Sacramento. So, I am looking
forward to a busy January!
President’s Notes by Jeanne Ferrell
Happy New Year…
Here’s to new beginnings!
A new beginning for BOOT…we are very happy
to announce a new Board Member, Chuck Ross.
We are looking forward to a long and beneficial
alliance. Mr. Ross also serves on the Chamber of
Commerce of Old Town San Diego, the CALPA
Board of Directors, AND is a board member of
the Historic Old Town Community Foundation.
We have mentioned in the last few Poppy Papers
the upcoming CALPA Conference. BOOT is
hosting the Conference this year, so planning is
stepping up. Mary Ellen Young and Chuck Ross
are co-coordinating the event in San Diego with
help from the BOOT Board. This is our chance to
showcase our Park to CALPA members from
throughout California. We wish to thank the
Park Staff for their assistance and cooperation.
This is a great opportunity for ALL of us!
We are working on our continuing Contract with
the Department of Parks and Recreation, State of
California. Many thanks to Deanna Turton for
helping with this project.

In Memory of Steven Leroy Antis
1958-2011
We extend our sincere condolences to two BOOT
Members and VIPs…
Jean Musgrove’s husband, Bill, passed away in
November; and Becky Green recently lost her father. Our
prayers are with Jean, Becky, and their families. May
fond memories help soften the sadness of your loss and
brighten each coming day.
In Sympathy
Steve was a docent at Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, where he met
Jean Harshman. They were married March 11, 1989. Subsequently Jacob
Samuel and Katie Scarlett were born. The family remained docents in the Park
for many years.
Steve served as the BOOT Board President for a short time, while Jean served
on the Period Attire Committee, as well as the BOOT Board. As Jean was a
very good seamstress, their children were also dressed in period attire from
infancy to their teenage years.
Steve enjoyed historic reenacting, miniature and board gaming and being with
his family. During the memorial services, Son Jacob gave a very sincere tribute
to his father and reflected on many memories in Old Town. His reflection was
on the time he spent with his father, the things Steve taught him, and the
lessons that still needed to be taught. Daughter Katie also prepared a written
memorial, but asked that officiating pastor [Pastor Hovick] make the
presentation. The memorial reflected on their family meals together where
everyone had their special jobs to do. Retired Pastor Sieber also spoke about
Steve's decision to stop fighting cancer...and the peace he felt with that
decision. Pastor Sieber said it was a real lesson to him as a pastor! Memorial
service was followed by a reception in the parish hall.
Jean's mother, Joan Harshman was the lead person for LADO before all the
volunteers became state volunteers. Jean’s father, Dan Harshman, was the lead
volunteer printer for many years.

Blessing of the Animals
Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012
12:00-3:00 p.m. Admission to this event is free.
The blessing will be led by Monsignor Mark Campbell, but all faiths and convictions are welcome to celebrate
the animals that make our lives so special. The blessings will take place between 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.
There will be a pet expo with treats for pets and owners as well as activities for kids. Sky Hunters will be
bringing exotic birds to the event and various rescue groups such as Emergency Animal Rescue and Wee
Companions will educate the public about rescuing, rehabilitating and supporting wild and domesticated
animals.
There will also be animals available for adoption and a special appearance by Chopper the Biker Dog.
Chopper is a one-year-old Boston terrier who is known all around the county for riding his own Harley
Davidson motorcycle and his distinctive biker goggles.
The event features animal-themed entertainment such as pet psychic readings by Sindi Somers from Wild and
Tame. Other groups participating include Love My Pet, Santee Bunny Shelter, and Chihuahua Rescue of San
Diego.
Historically, this event has been happening for more than 300 years - dating back to the 1700s. In San Diego
the annual Benediction of the Beasts celebrates St. Anthony of the Desert, the Patron Saint of Animals.
Activities for both animals and families make this celebration both unique and very moving to all who
participate.
This event is sponsored by j.simms agency, Fiesta de Reyes and Old Town San Diego State Historic
Park. For more information, visit: http://www.facebook.com/fiestadereyes or call event producers,
j.simms agency at 858-689-9909.

About 9am on Dec. 5th, Bob Jones along with Chuck and Jeanne Ferrell drove up to the back gate of
the Machado-Stewart Casa with their two trucks filled with hot compost from the county land fill.
There to meet them were Gary Turton, J.P. Gendron, Nelda Harris and Sergia Castellanos.
Unfortunately, Deanna Turton could not help out this time because she was home in bed with a
terrible cold. However, as Gary was home by noon, the job got done as speedily as in other years.
Many thanks to everyone for doing the "heavy" work---but Jeanne did suggest that we recruit some
younger people for next year, as she had several sore muscles the next day.

Seasons Greetings and Happy New Year!
It’s been an amazing 2011 at Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, and hard to believe it is 2012 already. I
want to share a few past and upcoming things for readers of the Poppy Paper, BOOT Board and BOOT Members.
Every day, behind the scenes and out in the Park, there are so many programs, projects, ideas, and discussions
going on as to how to implement the Park’s Mission, “…to present the opportunity to experience the history of
early San Diego by providing a connection to the past,” and accomplish that through the Strategic Plan for
Interpretation document. This past year some of the accomplishments include:
EVENTS – a variety that represent early San Diego, including Stagecoach Days, 4th of July, Ladies Day, and
Fiestas Patrias. The staff worked cooperatively with a myriad of other events that helped promote the Park.
PERIOD ATTIRE – Almost all staff and numerous volunteers made improvements to their attire, with the
help of BOOT’s funding and stipend program, as well as the tireless hours and discussion of staff and
members.
PARK OPERATIONS – Despite the challenges of staffing and budget shortages, museum operations, public
safety, and maintenance were accomplished in an outstanding manner; THANKS to all for their initiative and
working so well without a Supervising Ranger.
CONCESSIONS – A few transitions through the year, and overall the shops are also making strides to
interpret the Park through their products, staff, and design.
VOLUNTEERS – What more can I say…WITHOUT our great volunteers, not much of the work and
programs would be done! The program has grown this past year, primarily because of the relations that each
volunteer has with each other, programs, and the public. Word of mouth is helping to spread the opportunities
to share early San Diego.
LIVING HISTORY – Some of the outstanding programs this year included the Blacksmith, Mountain Men,
Californios, Fiber Arts, Quilting, Vignettes, and Print Shop. Again, many volunteers dedicating lots of hours.
There are so many other activities accomplished this past year, and it is much appreciated!
HISTORIC GARDENS – So dedicated a team of workers, keeping up on the beautiful landscapes around the
museums; all are enjoyed by visitors learning about how early San Diego used plants during their time.
REPAIRS – several projects by volunteers/members greatly helped where staff could not get to them!
Tours Daily and Educational – Tirelessly each day at 11am & 2pm, daily tours go out through the Rob-Rose,
opening up the understanding of the Park to locals and visitors. School and group tours continue, despite the
City Schools dropping the 4th grade program.
LIGHTING – Appropriate design and fixtures were researched, and they are in the process of being installed
in the Plaza and buildings throughout the Park.
SOCIAL MEDIA - Used to market and reach out to those in the information age.
ACCESSIBILITY (Phase 1) – Various boardwalks and critical improvements were done to provide access.
These are just some of the things around the Park, with so much more behind the scenes! As we go into the New
Year, these will continue to be our core focus. We often have such great ideas, and I encourage you to take it on
to build on the above programs within our Mission and Strategic Plan. The cooperating association is appreciated
and recognized as a significant partner in support for these programs through donations, fundraising, and store
sales. Thanks again, for without you, our supporters, members, Board, staff, and volunteers, Old Town San Diego
State Historic Park would not be what it was in 2011, and can be in 2012.

From the Editor’s Desk…
Holidays can be the best of times, celebrating with family and friends…eating too much…
maybe drinking too much...but, all in the spirit of good will. (Our waistlines will pay for it
later!)
Unfortunately, the holidays can also bring not so pleasant news! Too many times this year I
opened a Christmas card and learned of parents passing away, spouses requiring medical
treatment, and children and/or grandchildren who have lost their way!
I thought to myself... “Why do we wait until Christmas to communicate our year? Why don’t
we just pick up the phone, write a quick note, send an e-mail, or ‘text’ a dear friend more
often? Why can’t we let our friends know what is happening from day to day? Why have we
become so busy to forget to communicate with those people who we hold dear?”
Sooooooo – my New Year’s Resolution is simply to “keep in touch.” Good or bad…I’m going
to let those people who care about me KNOW how much I care about them!
And, it is time for ALL of us in Old Town to communicate with those people we hold dear!!!
As the familiar saying goes…“Make new friends, but keep the old…one is silver and the other
gold!” We have lost far too many friends who have contributed such wealth to the Old Town
community. As we reach out to “make new friends,” we must never forget those “old friends”
who brought us this far, and we must let them know how special they are…
Happy New Year!!!
