Dear Parents and Carers, Mayoral Welcome for our Chinese Visitors On Monday, our three Chinese students, Linda, Anna and Roland, were welcomed to the City of Greater Bendigo by

the mayor, Margaret O’Rourke. During her speech, Ms O’Rourke talked about the close links Bendigo has formed

with China over the years. She hoped that our visitors would find time to visit the Golden Dragon Museum to see

some of the fabulous Chinese artefacts that are housed there. She mentioned the new paper craft dragon, to be

called Dai Gum Loong – (Big Golden Dragon) that will hopefully be unveiled in time for the 2019 Bendigo Easter

Festival. (This dragon, when finished, will be approximately 120 metres in length, making it the longest dragon of its

kind in the world. It will surpass Sun Loong by about 20 metres.)

Ms O’Rourke congratulated the 16 Bendigo Primary Schools involved in Team China for continuing to strengthen

the intercultural exchange through the Chinese Immersion Program and the Overseas Learning Experience.

Overseas Learning Experience Travellers for 2019 It was pleasing to see the interest that was generated in being involved in the Overseas Learning Experience to China in 2019. After a rigorous application and interview process, the following Quarry Hill Primary School students were selected to be involved in next year’s program: Abbie G Ornella B Xanthe T Campbell T I would like to congratulate these four students, and I know they will be wonderful ambassadors for our school. I would also like to thank all the students who applied. It takes a special person to put themselves forward and try something new. I know it is disappointing to miss out, but all students conducted themselves in a very mature manner. They too, are to be congratulated. Camp Curumbene Our Grade 4 campers made the most of the glorious weather at Camp Curumbene at Corop on Monday and Tuesday of this week. The camp offers a great range of environmental programs that include lots of fun and hands-on activities. This has given our students a chance to try a range of new and exciting things such as, canoeing, low ropes course, flying fox, and indoor climbing - to name but a few. They loved it. Our Grade 3 students head off today to hopefully have an equally amazing time. The weather forecast is for very hot weather, which may make the experience more challenging. Thank you to all the staff and parent helpers for giving the Grade 3 and 4 students

this opportunity by giving of their time. Hopefully the memories last a lifetime.

Sunscreen The Department of Education and Training provides schools with the following information regarding sunscreen:

Apply SPF 30 (or higher) broad spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen

Apply a generous amount to clean, dry skin at least 20 minutes before going outdoors

Re-apply sunscreen every two hours (whether or not the label tells you do to this) or more often when

sweating or swimming

Check and follow the use-by date stated on the packaging

Store sunscreen below 30°C

Do not rely on sunscreen alone as it does not provide full protection - combine with other sun protection

measures

Develop strategies that remind children to apply sunscreen before going outdoors.

Students should:

Be able to apply their own sunscreen

Be reminded to reapply sunscreen

Have access to their own sunscreen for all outdoor activities.

Because there is a small risk of allergies and the potential for cross-infection from sunscreen use, parents are required to provide sunscreen for their child/children. Children are encouraged to practice applying sunscreen at home, so they can develop this skill ready for school. Please note; the school will no longer be providing sunscreen for mass use. Teachers will not apply sunscreen to students. Snakes Victoria’s Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning issued a statement at the beginning of October, warning Victorians that snakes were also ‘enjoying the spring sunshine’. With the weather warming up, snakes are now becoming more active and a lot more visible as they start to emerge from their winter hibernation. The Department has outlined a number of steps people can take to avoid being bitten. If you see a snake, you are to remain calm and keep yourself and your pets away. You should never attempt to touch a snake, nor should your attempt to kill it. If bitten by a snake, call an ambulance (000) and try to stay calm. In order to slow down the flow of any venom which may have been injected, apply a pressure bandage (improvise if required) over the bite and up the limb, then remain as still as possible. Remembrance Day – Sunday 11th November At 11:00am on 11th November each year, a minute’s silence is traditionally observed to remember those who have died or suffered in wars and conflicts around the world. Sunday 11th November 2018 commemorates the 100th anniversary of Remembrance Day. Given that Remembrance Day falls on a weekend this year, we will hold a minute’s silence at school on Friday November 9th at 11.00am. RSL poppies, pins and bracelets are available for purchase from the office. Have a great week. Jo Menzel Principal
