MOVING OUTSIDE
THE INSTITUTION
One of my favorite movies is
“SHAWSHANK REDEMP-
TION,” because it is loaded with
snippets of hope in a vile and
violent prison in the 1940s, in-
sights about life together, and a
contrast of how life should be lived with how it really is.
At one point in the movie Red says, “These walls are kind of funny. First
you hate ‘em, then you get used to ‘em. Enough time passes, gets so you depend on
them. That’s institutionalized.”
I guess I’ve been an institutional man for thirty-four years. The four walls of
my office and the four walls of the sanctuary have given structure to my life. Call-
ing in your homes and in the hospitals, baptisms, funerals, weddings, counseling,
sharing embraces, visiting at Mr. C’s and the Kumback, etc.--we have shared mo-
ments you don’t share with many people in this world. We have counted on each
other, built bonds of love and trust, and kept confidences, and been there for each
other in despair and joy.
Was it a perfect ministry? No. I’m sure I disappointed you on more than a
few occasions. I could have done a better job. For those times I hope you will for-
give.
Nonetheless, there is so much for which I am grateful. The nice fishing shirt
and the money for fishing stuff was so appreciated. Even without these gifts I have
always felt loved and appreciated here in Perry. You have taken care of Paula and
me with a more than adequate salary and home. But sharing our life and faith to-
gether has been the best.
I can only say, “Thank you.”
In His Love, Martin

CHOIR NOTES
See you Sunday Paula
CWF will meet Wednesday, August 10,
beginning with a noon luncheon followed by
our monthly meeting for business and wom-
en's studies. The lesson will be a book review
given by Miriam Lambert titled, Keep It Shut
by Karen Ehman. It is a nonfiction book about
what to say, how to say it, and when to say
nothing at all. This author's book is funny,
honest, and tackles the hard subjects of gossip;
speaking the truth in love; and the power of
our words from a Biblical standpoint. As a
woman, has your mouth ever gotten you in a
tangled-up mess? Through some spiritual in-
sight and soul-searching a new rule of tongue
may be adopted for you.
Join us for lunch and fellowship at
the CWF August 10 meeting.
The church family is invited to celebrate Jim and Pam Light-foot's 40th wedding anniver-sary and the renewal of their wedding vows at their home 20751 CR 50 (W of town) on
August 14 between 5:30 - 8 pm.

10 WAYS YOU CAN AVOID IDENTITY THEFT
What can seniors do to protect themselves from identity theft? My brother-in-law, who's 77, recently had his identity stolen and I want to make sure it doesn't happen to me. Great question! Each year around 17 million people fall victim to iden-tity theft, which happens when someone gets access to your Social Security number, bank or credit card account number or other identi-fying information and uses it to steal from you. Here are some free steps you can take to reduce your risks. Guard your personal information: Never give your Social Security number, credit card number, checking or savings account numbers to anyone unless you initiate the contact. Also, do not carry your Social Security card around in your wallet or purse, and don't carry around your Medicare card either unless you're going to the doctor. Get off mailing lists: Put a stop to preapproved credit-card offers, which is a gold mine for ID thieves. To do this visit optoutpre-screen.com or call 888-567-8688. They will ask for your Social Secu-rity number and date of birth. You can stop other junk mail at dmachoice.org, and reduce telemarketing calls at donotcall.gov. Use strong passwords: To safeguard your personal data on your smartphone or tablet don't use a password that's easy to hack, like 1234 or 0000. Also, make your computer passwords more than 8 characters long, with uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols like # and %, and use different passwords on different ac-counts. If it's hard to remember them, try a password manager ser-vice like dashlane.com, truekey.com or lastpass.com. Be wary of unknown emails: Never click on links in emails from strangers or those that claim to be from the Social Security Admin-istration, IRS or other government agencies, or from your bank, phone or credit card company warning of a "problem." This can result in identity-stealing malware being installed on your computer. To pro-tect your computer from malware, install antivirus software (see avg.com and avast.com for free options) and set up automatic securi-ty updates and full weekly scans. Secure your mail: Empty your home mailbox quickly or buy a locked mailbox to deter thieves. Mail outgoing payments from a U.S. Postal Service mailbox or the post office, not from your more vulnerable home mailbox. Get safer credit cards: If you don't already have one, get an EMV chip credit card from your credit card provider. They're much more difficult for fraudsters to hack than magnetic strip cards. Shred unneeded documents: Buy a crosscut paper shredder so you can shred all unneeded records, receipts, statements, preapproved credit offers or other papers you throw out that have your financial or personal information. Monitor your accounts: Review your monthly bank and credit card statements carefully and see if your bank or credit card issuer offers free alerts that will warn you of suspicious activity as soon as it's de-tected. If they do, sign up for them or use eversafe.com, which will do it for you for a small fee. Watch your credit: Check your credit report at annualcredit-report.com or call 877-322-8228. You can receive one free report a year from each of the three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion), so consider staggering your request so you can get one free copy every four months. Set up security freezes: If you don't plan to apply for new credit, loans, insurance or utility services, freeze your credit reports so crooks can't open up new accounts in your name. Rules vary by state, but the $5 to $20 fee is waived if you're 65 or older or show proof of past ID theft. Security freezes are set up at all three credit bureaus at equifax.com, experian.com and transunion.com. This article copied from, Oklahoma Disciples Foundation Inc. newsletter July 29, 2016

Thank you,
thank you,
thank you for
your gifts for me to fish in my retirement.
You may know the anonymous wisdom,
“Give a man a fish and he’ll eat for a day. Give him money for fishing equipment and take him fishing with you and he’ll drink all your beer.”
I’m not sure if I remember that saying
correctly. But I am certainly thankful for your
expressions of love.
Who knows—there may be a fish fry
down the road!!!
