REDSVinsobres Altitude 420, Domaine Jaume 2010Dark, delicious and ready to drink: this is a complete wine from the formidable Jaume family. It comes from vines at an altitude of over 400m (hence the name), imbuing the wine with freshness and poise. With a high proportion of syrah in the blend, and without any oak to get in the way of the vibrant fruit flavours, this is a bargain. 13.5% ref HR-RH30171 £9.50 bottle £114 dozen

Côtes-du-Rhône Réserve Wine Society, Perrin et Fils 2010We worked with Pierre Perrin to produce this exclusive unoaked blend and are delighted with the result. Much like the Perrins’ famous Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Beaucastel, there is a high proportion of the mourvèdre grape in the blend, which brings bountiful dark-fruit flavour, but here the fruit comes mostly from the northern fringes around Vinsobres. 13.5% Low stock: limited to six bottles per memberref HR-RH30131 £9.95 bottle £59.70 six

Cairanne Côtes-du-Rhône Villages, Ventabren, Domaine des Escaravailles 2010Gilles Ferran has consistently produced good-value Cairanne in a rich, smooth style. In this superb vintage, this is very dark and offers sweet ripe fruit with soft tannins. Drink this year and next. 14.5%ref HR-RH30211 £12.50 bottle £150 dozen

2010 is a vintage that has everything, and it is my pleasure to present this archive selection of 17 reds, plus a trio of whites, for you to enjoy. All have been lying in our temperature-controlled cellars in Stevenage since release. Such a wide variety of wines from this great year is a rare sight these days, so please do take advantage.

From my very first encounter with the 2010 vintage, during the harvest, it was clear that this was going to be an exceptional year for the region. Quantities were low, but what was made was of exceptional quality in both the north and south of the valley – a rare and seldom-seen combination that continues to draw comparisons with the great 1990 vintage.

2010 truly was a perfect score. At the time, I noted that what really

sets these wines apart is their balance, which is as perfect as I have ever seen in my many years of selecting and tasting Rhône wines. What is extraordinary too is that, seven years on, the wines have remained very youthful, with the reds keeping their dark colours and vibrant fruit flavours. Some, like Vincent Delubac’s Cairanne ‘Authentique’, have actually needed these intervening years to be ready for drinking.

Many will also keep and develop further over the coming years, but our six-bottle mixed case rounds up those reds that are perfectly ready now. Enjoy!

Saint-Gervais Les Rouvières Côtes-du-Rhône Villages, Domaine Sainte Anne 2010With a high percentage of mourvèdre in the blend, this is one of the most interesting Rhône wines in its price bracket and the 2010 is quite wonderful. A multi-layered red that offers great value for money. Now to 2022. 14.5% Low stock: limited to six bottles per memberref HR-RH30101 £13.50 bottle £81 six

Cairanne Côtes-du-Rhône Villages, l’Authentique, Domaine Delubac 2010Bruno and Vincent Delubac are colourful and exuberant growers in the south. This is the top wine, a 50:50 blend of grenache and syrah, raised in barrel for 18 months. Very full and richly flavoured. Now to 2025. 15%ref HR-RH39951 £14.95 bottle £179 dozen

Crozes-Hermitage Rouge Cuvée, Louis, Domaine Belle 2010Good Crozes-Hermitage can offer an excellent-value alternative to its grand neighbour, Hermitage. This one comes from the northern part of Crozes, behind Hermitage itself, where the slopes are steep and some of the vines very old – up to 100 years or more. This is deeply coloured concentrated and rich, the result of part-ageing in oak barrels for a year. Now to 2020. 13%ref HR-RH34471 £14.95 bottle £179 dozen

Massif d’Uchaux Vieilles Vignes, Château Saint-Estève 2010An irresistible proposition, this deeply coloured, full and fruity grenache-syrah blend comes from a top estate, old vines and, of course, a great vintage. Now to 2021. 14.5%ref HR-RH37751 £17 bottle £204 dozen

Gigondas Pierre Aiguille, Paul Jaboulet Ainé 2010This dark, brooding, richly flavoured Gigondas is traditionally made with six months’ ageing in large oak vats to round it out. It needed a little time to come round, but is now delicious and à point. Now to 2020. 14.5%ref HR-RH36941 £19 bottle £228 dozen

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine La Boutinière 2010The estate’s history goes back for a century, but for most of that time the Boutin family sold their fruit in bulk. This estate bottling is a fine Châteauneuf: having spent a year in oak foudres and some time in bottle, it is thickly textured, dark and beautifully ripe. Now to 2020. 15%ref HR-RH33921 £19 bottle £228 dozen

Vacqueyras, Domaine de Montvac Variation 2010A pure 100% grenache, which comes from one specific plot of old vines, this is full-flavoured and full-bodied with plenty of character and length of flavour. Now to 2019. 14.5% Low stock: limited to six bottles per memberref HR-RH34671 £20 bottle £120 six

Saint-Joseph Mairlant, Domaine Villard 2010Made from old vines on some of this fine estate’s best slopes, this is a dark, rich, ripe-tasting Saint-Joseph. Still couched in tannins, it will benefit from decanting before serving to show off its complexity and fruit. Now to 2021. 13%ref HR-RH34281 £21 bottle £252 dozen

Crozes-Hermitage Cuvée Christophe, Domaine des Remizières 2010A very impressive syrah indeed: concentrated with weighty black-olive paste and blackberry flavours; plus some delicious spicy complexity from the oak used in the winery. Now to 2022. 13.5%ref HR-RH29591 £21 bottle £252 dozen

Château de Montfaucon, IGP Gard Rouge M le Baron 2010A glorious, idiosyncratic red made from no fewer than 15 different grape varieties – some from 100-year-old vines – and aged for a year in oak. The result is quite wonderful, combining concentration, complexity and spice, and bottled with a handsome label reproduced from an 1829 original (and which you can see on the cover). A great match for lamb tagine. Now to 2024. 14%ref HR-RH43601 £25 bottle £300 dozen

Cornas, Champelrose, Domaine Courbis 2010A stylish interpretation of Cornas. Good use of oak has rounded off some of the wine’s edges after some time in bottle. Dark and brooding, with good structure and excellent weight of fruit. Now to 2021.13.5%ref HR-RH29751 £25 bottle £300 dozen

Saint-Joseph Rouge Tilde, Domaine Pierre Jean Villa 2010A very fine, fruity syrah from the north, made from 40-year-old vines, only partially destemmed before fermentation and aged for 20 months in oak. Now to 2020. 12.5% Low stock: limited to six bottles per memberref HR-RH31681 £26 bottle £156 six

The Society’s Exhibition Hermitage Rouge 2010A very fine and refined expression of syrah coming from some of the best plots of Hermitage and blended specially for The Society by Hermitage’s grandest name, Jean-Louis Chave. Full-flavoured, generous and spicy. Now to 2028. 14%ref HR-RH35181 £36 bottle £432 dozen

Côte-Rôtie, Domaine Ogier 2010For those who like a more modern approach to syrah, this is a polished and rich wine, marked by Ogier’s exemplary use of new oak in the winery. This is full and dark, but very elegant too. Now to 2022. 13%ref HR-RH29861 £40 bottle £480 dozen

WHITESThe Rhône’s oft-underrated white wines were also brilliant in 2010. All of the ingredients that make them so rich and food-friendly are here, but lifted and enhanced by a little extra freshness. We have a mouthwatering trio to explore, all of which are perfect to enjoy now.

Saint-Péray Prestige, Domaine du Tunnel 2010A wine that will work with food but that could also be enjoyed as an aperitif given the freshness of the vintage. The blend is 80% marsanne and 20% roussanne, fermented and then aged briefly in oak, producing a seductive white with an appetising salty tang. Drink this year. 13.5% Low stock: limited to six bottles per memberref HR-RH29261 £26 bottle £156 six

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc, Domaine Saint Préfert 2010Saint Préfert’s white is founded on the clairette grape, which offers a lighter touch, a fresh taste and some crisp, refreshing acidity. With an attractive nuttiness to the palate and impressive complexity, this is ready to be savoured. Drink this year and next. 13.5% Low stock: limited to six bottles only per memberref HR-RH30931 £33 bottle £198 six

Saint-Joseph Lieu-Dit Saint-Joseph, Guigal 2010Comprised of nearly 100% of old-vine marsanne grown on granite on the Saint-Joseph slope that gave its name to the appellation, this is a delicious and richly flavoured white with flashes of honey and lemon. Now to 2019. 13% Low stock: limited to six bottles per memberref HR-RH30771 £35 bottle £210 six
