Meet Our Executive Director Listening to Del Failing speak, you realize that he knows not only

about the state of Delaware, but also about the people who live here. Aman who possesses a wealth of information, his unassuming nature putsyou at ease from the moment he says “Hello.” And from just one conver-sation, you also realize that Del has worked tirelessly be-hind the scenes, dedicating the last 22 years to helpingsouthern Delawareans obtain assistance at People’s Placeand find their path to growth and independence.

Del joined People’s Place in 1990 as a Program Direc-tor. Today, Del is front and center as the Executive Director, one of only 4 in the last 40 years — quite an accomplish-ment. He has watched People’s Place grow to more than175 in staff, and he leads People’s Place with a gentle hand, much like he treats the people who seek help. All of hisemployees say the same thing about him — “He’s a niceguy and great to work for.”

This year People’s Place will be celebrating 40 years ofservice to the community. Del maintains that he wants toimplement the vision of the board of directors, including afew who have been involved since the beginning. Thinkingabout how People’s Place will commemorate this mile-stone, Del envisions activities that will bring more awareness to People’sPlace. These days though, he says he wants Milford residents and the sur-rounding communities to know that great work is being done by his staff, and he wants the people who need help to know that he will do whateverhe can to help them. Please join Del in spreading the word about themany services Delawareans can access at People’s Place.

People’s Place Receives Federal Grant In October, People’s Place was awarded a $250,000 Transitional Hous-

ing Assistance Program Grant by the U. S. Department of Justice throughits Office on Violence Against Women. The Transitional Housing AssistanceProgram Grant for Victims of Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Stalk-ing, or Sexual Assault focuses on a holistic, victim-centered approach toprovide transitional housing services that move individuals into perma-nent housing.

The grant will provide financial assistance to survivors of domestic vio-lence over a three-year period to pay for certain moving expenses (rentand utilities) from shelter to permanent housing in the community. Cur-rently, People’s Place operates three domestic violence shelters (Englishand non-English speaking) in Kent and Sussex Counties.

When I look at the rain, it re-minds me of my tears,

Of my pain and my heartachethat has followed me for years,

Of the sadness and tragedy thathas followed me every day.

I can pull down the blinds, butthat won’t make it go away.

    WOMEN

Sometimes you smile to halt the tears,But within every droplet sheds one morefear.Sometimes love takes you down shortpaths that lead into dead end roads.

    But girls we stay

We stay because we’ve seen it all before. For the kids sake we can take one more.We stay because our eyes can’t see no way out.

One day we realize we deserve much more.

Getting sick of being tired you show him the door.

Enough is enough, no more falling to the floor.

    So girls we leave.

We leave because we get strong. We leave because it’s been too much

for too long.We leave because we know this can’t

    be love.

And we survive. And we grow. And we learn,And we become WOMEN

    I GOT FLOWERS TODAY

    I got flowers today.

It wasn’t my birthday or any other special day.

We had our first argument last nightAnd he said a lot of cruel things that

really hurt me.I know he is sorry and didn’t mean

the things he said,Because he sent me flowers today.

    I got flowers today.

It wasn’t our anniversary or any other special day.

Last night, he threw me into a wall and started to choke me.

It seemed like a nightmare.I couldn’t believe it was real.I woke up this morning sore and

bruised all over.I know he must be sorry.Because he sent me flowers today.

    I got flowers today.

And it wasn’t Mother’s Day or any other special day.

Last night, he beat me up again. And it was much worse than all

the other times. If I leave him, what will I do?How will I take care of my kids? What about money?I’m afraid of him and scared to leave.I know he must be sorry.Because he sent me flowers today.

Today was a very special day.It was the day of my funeral.Last night, he finally killed me.He beat me to death. If only I had gathered enough courage

and strength to leave him.I would not have gotten flowers today.

A Message from Our Executive Director Welcome to the inaugural issue of our newsletter, The People’s

Voice. You have received this newsletter because you have touched usin some way and have been a valuable asset to our 40-year history –as an employee, supporter, donor, volunteer, and/or friend. We hopeyou share our joy in marking the 40th year of service to Delawareans! We are very thankful to have accomplished this milestone, and we aregrateful for your ongoing support. We could not do the importantwork we do without your help.

Every day at People’s Place we welcome the challenge to recog-nize the needs in our communities and use our knowledge and inge-nuity to provide the services that most appropriately match thoseneeds. Times have changed over the past 40 years, but our experi-ence has shown us that the need for mental health and social serviceprograms in Delaware remains constant. Today, the need for emer-gency shelters, transitional housing, youth services, and advocacy fora variety of people is greater than ever.

As we planned our newsletter, we pondered how to effectivelyconvey the impact of our services in a few pages of print. One pointwas continually raised; we want to give our clients and residents theopportunity to share their experiences – in their own words, their ownvoice. Those are the stories you will find interwoven in The People’sVoice.

I am proud and honored to be a part of People’s Place because ofthe people we serve and the great work of our Board of Directors andstaff. And I am always amazed at the generosity of Delawareans. Ihope you enjoy this first issue of The People’s Voice, and thank youfor your support.
