This brochure covers synthetic ropes for heavy lifting applications.
COMPANY INFORMATION

Heavy lift is an area of growing importance offshore. Assembly of oil rigs and production platforms, as well as renewable energy wind farms and wave devices, relies on the ability to safely lift large components weighing 1,000t – 5,000t.
Although steel wire ropes are commonly used for heavy lift, synthetic fi bre rope is now able to match the strength of wire rope, yet is much lighter. Moreover fi bre rope allow contractors to optimise the lift capacity of the crane, as well as providing important handling benefi ts over traditional steel wire rope.
State-of-the-Art R&D Facility
Lankhorst Ropes is committed to the on-gong development of heavy lift synthetic fi bre ropes. The state-of-the-art research and development facility at its Global Synthetics Lankhorst Euronete location in Maia, Portugal provides fundamental research and product development to support its Global Synthetics Lankhorst Euronete division that markets the brands Lankhorst®, Euronete®, Phillystran® and Oliveira®.
In addition to the research & development facility, WireCo has recently invested pilot-scale equipment designed to strengthen Lankhorst Ropes’ research capabilities into yarn extrusion, and ultimately synthetic fi bre rope performance in heavy lift applications.
World class heavy lift rope R&D and manufacture Heavy lift ropes and slings are manufactured at its new purpose built rope production facility at Viana do Castello, on the coast about 80 km north of Porto, Portugal. The factory covers some 3,600m² production facilities together with 2,400m² storage area. In addition to rope production, the factory includes a large make-up and storage area for the preparation of mooring ropes, and heavy lift ropes.

Synthetic Fiber Tethers have a proven track in demanding offshore applications such as riser and umbilical tethers and mooring mid-water arches.
SYNTHETIC FIBER TETHERS
The use of synthetic fi ber tethers such as the LANKO®FORCE & GAMA98® Dyneema® has signifi cant performance advantages over chain and steel wire tethers. In addition to being lighter and with almost neutral buoyancy, synthetic fi ber tethers offer:
• Reduced cost of buoyancy elements• No corrosion • No fatigue issues• Easy system installation
7
Synthetic fi bre ropes slings are easier to handle especially where manual handling is required, and as strong as conventional steel wire rope but 7 times lighter.
Too large to fi t into either normal containers or onto conventional transporters, the transportation, handling and installation of heavy items are normally one-off projects. The lighter fi bre sling allows the crane to handle heavier loads, as there is less weight in the sling, enabling maximum payload lift. In addition, the lift is gentler, avoiding unnecessary damage to the load.
SYNTHETIC LIFTING SLINGS
Lankhorst offers the LANKO®FORCE 12 strand ropes to produce slings with a minimum breaking load (MBL) of around 2.000 t in single leg confi guration and 3.400 t on a grommet confi guration.
For heavier loads, high performance GAMA98® Dyneema® rope can be used; we are able to offer 300mm diameter rope corresponding to a sling with 5,000 t MBL (single leg) and 8,500 t MBL on a grommet confi guration, allowing us to provide ropes for the most demanding heavy lift projects.
Advantages of synthetic fi ber rope slings1. As strong as wire (or stronger)2. Lighter – less weight in lifting gear3. Easy handling = more safe & effi cient4. Reduced risk of injuries5. Torque-free6. No corrosion

Demands for deepwater lifting and lowering have grown steadily as the oil and gas industry has sought to increase the extent of subsea processing. As a result the industry is now faced with the need for lifting and lowering heavy and sizable subsea processing units into deeper waters.
The weight of steel wire ropes makes wire rope lifting/lowering systems both ineffi cient and impractical at water depths greater than 2,000m - 3,000m. At 3,000m, the lifting capacity is reduced by 50%; the other 50% is to support the weight of the steel wire.
The solution to optimising lift and lowering capacity is to use a Fiber Rope Deployment System (FRDS). The weight of fi ber rope is much less than the steel wire rope, making them almost neutrally buoyant when used in water and with a 100% crane capacity, irrespective of the water depth.
A hang off system is a vessel side-mounted hang-off frame for transferring loads from a standard crane fi tted with steel-rope winch to a vertically suspended fi bre rope such as GAMA98® Dyneema® used in sections (typically 1,000m), spooled in steel drums stored on deck. Active Heave Compensated seabed landings are done with standard and traditional steel wire rope on the winch.
As there is no high-tension spooling, there is no potential damage / risk to the GAMA98® Dyneema® .

Continued rising requirements in offshore technology on lifting capacity, depth and equipment reliability have led in turn to increasing demands on large ropes in very long lengths.
The use of LANKO®FORCE12 strand ropes will allow operators and contractors to meet the more important requirements with regards to reducing weight per length, corrosion resistance, environmental protection, ergonomics and personal safety.

GAMA 98® ROPE MADE WITH DYNEEMA® are manufactured from high efficiency sub-ropes cores (strength member) laid parallel within an outer braided jacket (non-strength member). The sub-cores are high efficiency eight strands braided Dyneema® ropes. The external jacket is a 32-carrier twill polyester braid. This construction is torque balanced and is one of the strongest rope constructions currently available. The breaking load is the same whether the rope is wet or dry and considerably higher than nylon or polyester size for size. The characteristics of high strength, low weight, make this rope easy to handle with consequent reduction in operational costs. The polyester jacket confers to the rope an excellent resistance to abrasion.

The Lanko®Ultra Round slings is always made out of high performance fibres such as Dyneema® which makes the sling very light in weight even up to 2,5 times lighter in compare to Polyester en 8 times in compare to Steel based slings. The Lanko®Ultra has a protection sleeve made out off 100% Dyneema® This material is extremly abrasion resistant and therefore suitable for for heavy lift applications.
PropertiesDyneema® is a High Modulus PolyEthylene Fibre (HMPE ), that offers maximum strength combined with minimum weight.
Standards• Lanko®Ultra round slings comply with the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EG• Lanko®Ultra have a CE -mark, according the Machinery Directive requirements.• Each Lanko®Ultra round sling is preloaded 2 times the WLL , before delivery.• A technical dossier is composed and validated by an independent authorized body (A.I.B. Vincotte and Lloyds).
Physical propertiesSpecific Gravity (g/cm3) : 0,97Elongation at WLL (in %) : 0,5Elongation in use : Similar to wire rope slings.Weight reduction in % : Compared to wire rope slings; < 80% Compared to polyester based slings; < 59 %Usable at temperature : - 50° C - + 60° CEffects on Chemical exposure* : Excellent on water, moisture, very resistant against chemicals and micro organism. Good resistance to acid and alkali.Effects on Chemical exposure* : 0,0

ApplicationThe Lanko®Ultra Round Sling with the light duty (UPLD) Dyneema® based protection sleeve is developed for heavy lift applications were abrasion and flexibility is required.
The Lanko®Ultra Round Slings are exceptionally suitable for repetitive lifting jobs. Due to the maximum strength combinedwith the minimum weight, cost reductions will be achieved by spending less hours spend on rigging, less workers to rig, lessback and hand injuries, a.o.
