Message from the Pastor

Greetings in the name of Jesus Christ, Brothers and Sisters!

This month we begin the season of Lent on February 14th. That’s right; Ash Wednesday this year is on Valentine’s Day. There’s got to be a sermon in there somewhere. It gets even better when you look at the date of Easter Sunday: April Fool’s Day. God is helping preachers out

this year with sermon inspiration!

Here’s one connection between Valentine’s Day and Lent to think about. On Ash Wednesday, Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21 is proclaimed. Ap-parently it’s been used since the Middle Ages, and it talks about what are sometimes called the three disciplines of Lent: almsgiving (giving to the poor), prayer, and fasting. An explanation on Sundays and Sea-son’s website talks about them this way “To increase one’s giving to the poor, to increase one’s attention to prayer, and to decrease one’s focus on the self: the idea is that such disciplines open up the self to God

and to the neighbor.”

This quote frames these three Lenten disciplines with a little differ-ent wording, perhaps shedding some new insights on to what we may want to practice during Lent. It also talks about the connection be-tween Lent and Valentine’s Day. Yes, it’s love, to create some space for us to love God and our neighbor. We don’t fast on chocolate to lose a few pounds or to see if we’ve got the willpower or so that we can tell all our friends we did it, we don’t give to the poor to try to prove to our-selves or others that we are good Christians…we let go of a little bit of self (not in a mean or self-punishing way) so that a little more of us can be available to love God and the people around us and far away from us

and the people very different from us that we don’t like so much.

It’s so often about love. It may not be a stretch to say it’s always

about love.

So maybe this little reflection will help guide you as you think about how you may want to live into the season of Lent and to celebrate Val-

entine’s Day this year.

God bless you beloved brothers and sisters in Christ!!!
